For each animal, you learn all about the parts of their body, movements, food they eat, babies and even what they're used for. A cute picture compliments each animal, and there's even a question for you to answer about each animal.This is a very informative book for kids who are curious and want to learn about different animals. As an adult, I found the Weird Facts about each animal quite interesting, and I even picked up a few facts I wasn't aware of. I would recommend this to teachers, parents or anyone interested in farm animals.

This a great children's book about animals. Each page is chock full of detailed information about each farm animal. I like how the important facts were broken down into different subtitles, and each animal had their own chapter. All of the information was presented very neatly and well organized. Children will really be able to glean a significant amount of information about the animals from this book, how the animals behave; what they eat; how they move; and much more. I also found the illustrations to be cute and very colorful, they added a fun element to the book. This book would be a great teaching tool. It could be used in many different aspects of the classroom. I like that the book asks the readers questions, this ensures that the book was read thoroughly and the information was retained so that it can be recalled to answer questions later. The book allows the children to really work their reading skills and absorb the context. Teachers will find the setup of the book to be favorable.

I received a copy through Library Thing.This book was very cute, and my 3 year old loved learning about the different animals. He is certainly a little sponge these days, and will sometimes spit out facts learned from this book when we are doing other things, such as eating dinner, riding in the car, or outside playing. He loves looking at the bright colors even when I am not reading it to him.There are lots of facts to learn about the farm animals discussed in the book. There is a question at the end of each chapter with the answers at the end of the book. I noticed that the questions couldn't be found in the text of the book, which I think was a downside. The quiz would have better had the answer been found in the book - to reinforce what the child was reading (or having read to them).

I was pleased to review this book. There are interesting facts about each farm animal by page. There is also a short quiz at the end. I was not so pleased with the format of the book. Because the book detailed farm animal facts, I would like to see "real" pictures of animals maybe in their natural habitats. However, my 3 y.o. seemed to enjoy the pictures.

This book gives plenty of information for any kid looking for information on farm raised animals. A lot of children that live in the cities never get to see a farm or its animals. This book is very detailed and has enough information to explain any of these animals. There are pictures but not photographs. I recommend this book for anyone just wanting to know more about the animals that live on a farm!

This very basic book about farm animals is a great way to introduce children to the animals you may find on a farm. I found the quiz at the end of the book not very helpful, it did not lend any additional value to the book. I also would have liked to have seen realistic pictures of the farm animals in their natural settings.

The information was very good but the format was not that great. The pictures were mostly clip art images and some of them were very poor quality. Like I said though, the information made up for all the down falls. My kids enjoyed the info and are looking forward to visiting a farm when the weather warms up.

I also own the 5th Ed., and can say that this is a must-have for its inclusion of the MMPI-2-RF, PAI, MCMI-IV, and NEO. Very useful, and for some reason it made me feel better that it is quite a bit thicker than the 5th Ed. I guess it's the fact that I'm a few months out of grad school and already buying the new editions of previously required texts. Being current was nice while it lasted...

This book is a must have for learning assessment. It is easy to read, and easy to understand. In fact, when the authors broaches a topic that requires the use of a great deal of technical language, the authors give you fair warning, then direct you to another section to read and brush up on, so you can better understand the technical language they are about to present. I've never seen the WAIS IV discussed so clearly and eloquently.

It is a great book using it everyday in class it helps me to understand the assessment process. Thanks

This is a textbook for a graduate level class, and as a student I appreciated the author's suggestion of how to read the book (explicitly stating which sections to skim). Good background and theoretical orientation of assessment tools. This is one of the books I'm keeping for my professional reference.

As a teacher, I benefit from the reflections of others on how to do it better. Along with Parker Palmer, Stephen Brookfield offers much helpful guidance in this book. Not only does identifying and scrutinizing our own assumptions help us to teach better by inviting students to see the powerful influence of assumptions, but it helps us in our own research and growth as teachers. As a long time student, many professors I've had are brilliant and know a lot of information, but few are pedagogically aware and most are unable to submit their own assumptions to critical analysis. Brookfield invites us to do so and guides us on how to do so.One particular dimension of this book that has served me well as a teacher is the Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ). What I love about this simple, anonymous survey is that it provides clear insight into how students experience my teaching. While I can "read" a room, that is partial information. The CIQ has surprised me on numerous occasions in which I thought I was "bombing" a teaching session. At the very point that I thought I was failing, numerous students gave feedback that suggested the opposite. The CIQ alone is worth the price of the book.

This is the second Brookfield book that I have read, after starting with his revised edition of The Skillful Teacher (2015).After describing the importance of this kind of reflection, Brookfield begins by exploring myths we can subscribe to that will hinder our ability to be a critically reflective teacher. He then outlines four lenses we can use to inform our reflection: students’ perceptions, colleagues’ impressions, our own experience, and what the research tells us.Brookfield demonstrates a kind of transparently rarely conveyed in our sharing about becoming more effective in our teaching. As I read, I felt such kinship with him, as he shared his struggles of self flagellation. In my own desires to be a “great” teacher, it can seem like a lonely road.Having someone who conveys such similar challenges as my own was quite helpful, both in terms of knowing that my concerns are common, but also by providing practical ways to reflect in different ways and take actions to develop my teaching even further.This is a book I will revisit often, as a teacher and also as a faculty developer.

The first edition of this book had a big impact on me. In my own practice, I still use the lenses of critical reflection that Brookfield introduced back in 1995. Those lenses of self, students, colleagues, and theory can be used to think more critically and clearly about virtually any educational situation. But this second edition is even better. The lenses are still here, but there are also chapters on hegemony and on race that make this edition timelier and more powerful than ever.

If you are a fan of Stephen Brookfield's work, as I am, this book will not disappoint. He converts the covert into overt issues we should consider in our teaching and practice. Reflection is hard. Doing it is hard. Teaching it is hard. This book provides guidance as to what to consider and contemplate. 5 starts are well earned.

The 1st edition of this book came out in the mid-1990's so I'm glad it's been updated. Some things - such as the model of the 4 lenses on practice - are pretty much unchanged. But there are whole new chapters on team teaching, using social media backchannels and race/racism. I missed some of the 1st edition's chapters that I've used with graduate students to help them understand how to write critical reviews of literature. But this seems to have been pretty throughly revised. It seems more to the point and shorter than he previous edition. I'll keep using it in my courses and will be recommending this 2nd punchier edition to colleagues. Overall the 4 lenses model has been incredibly influential in shaping my own teaching and I love that there's so many practical techniques covered in here.

I’d give it less stars if I could.

Very easy to use. Am able to place two cards in one sleeve. Love that half are vertical opening and half are horizontal opening for the credit cards.

Fantastic, easy, fun book on leadership with great stories and insights that are easy to relate to the corporate world. I found this book useful on many more levels than I had originally anticipated, including leadership, management, coaching, and even parenting. First and foremost, it is an excellent book on leadership and does a great job of illustrating the various styles that can be employed in various situations. Abrashoff talks openly about many facets of the inner workings and command structure of the Navy, the various styles of command, and provides excellent insights about how he was able to lead in a way that could almost have been perceived as subordinate or disrespectful. He demonstrates how having clear goals and communicating those goals can aid in decision making, empowerment, peer relationships, and even help to understand and anticipate the needs of your superiors and customers.The biggest thing that I got from this book (and I fully intend to reread it and take notes the second time through) was how to be effective when procedures, culture, and bureaucracy all seem to be fighting against you. Not everyone may appreciate Captain Abrashoff's style, but there is no doubt the rapid and impressive results he achieved testify to many of the truths he adopted and employed. As a middle manager at a growing company, this book has energized and inspired me in many ways, and has also confirmed for me many of the things that I have been doing or have wanted to do. I have also been awakened to the importance and the challenge of managing up, something that I have not wanted to spend much if any time doing in the past.

I'm prior military, so naturally I was drawn to this book. When two of my most respected supervisors and one of my peers ranted and raved about this book, I knew it was something special. I read it in probably three days and I just couldn't put it down once I started. It almost brought me to tears a few times because I've had some pretty horrible leaders during my time in the military, and this was the absolute polar opposite of that. I was so happy for the crew and the author's leadership. I would easily re-enlist if I knew I was going to be serving under a leader like the author was. If you supervise anyone, you MUST read this book. If you hope to supervise someday, you MUST read this book. Both of those respected leaders I just talked about said they both base their leadership off this book and I had NO idea in the 2 years I have known them so far, but it all makes so much sense now.

Great read!At first I was like, mehhhhhh, because I had to read this book for a leadership class and any time i'm assigned to read something, I assume it's not going to be pleasant. Boy was I wrong!Captain Abrashoff has a lot to offer and teach in terms of leadership styles and techniques. He did an amazing job rehabilitating the crew of the USS Benfold through alternative leadership activities. I was having so much fun reading this book and getting ideas that I could apply at my place of work, that I finished it two weeks before I was required to. The anecdotes told by Captain Abrashoff are so very interesting and illustrate excellent examples of the techniques he is trying to teach.Thank you for your service Captain Abrashoff, and thank you for changing my leadership style!

This is an EXCELLENT book on leadership and living with others who have different backgrounds and experiences from you. We're not all cut of the same cloth, but we're all human with needs and bring different experiences and views to the job. Abrashoff made an effort to recognize every person's value and seeks ways as a leader to utilize those individual characteristics for the goals of the organization. Clearly the military is not civilian life, but there are far more things in common than differences. Having served 4 years in the Navy (1971-1975), including 1 year, 5 months and 13 days (but who was counting) on an aircraft carrier, the USS Ranger, CV-61, I was enthralled by the Benfold's emphasis on individual search for excellence and teamwork. There's nothing ironic of the aphorism "a rising tide lifts all boats".Abrashoff writes with an interesting combination of pride and modesty. There's no limit in to how far you can go if you do things to improve your company without caring about who gets the credit. Give opportunities to succeed to others below you, recognize the individual's characteristics, talents, views and needs and seek ways to incorporate them into the organization to improve it for everyone!Decades ago my teenage niece gave me a paperweight which I kept prominently displayed which read:"You're not hopeless, we can use you as a bad example."At first it comes across as a put down, but to me it was a tongue-in-cheek reminder that everyone has value and can contribute to the group's success.

This is my second review - I'm buying more copies to have on hand. There are many leadership styles, and many of them can be successful. This book is NOT for you if these traits are typical of you as a leader: you have to be right all the time; your personal successes must be recognized and appreciated; all important decisions must be made by you; your organization could never run without you.If, however, you find fulfillment from taking an active role in helping others achieve great success, if you find reward in your company being very successful without your name being billed as the sole reason for it's success, if you genuinely love your employees and want to see them grow into everything they are capable of, then you will find this book invaluable. It will help you create a strong and loyal culture with great energized and enthused team members. I really liked this book and thought it was a good read. If you are someone that meditates I'm sure you will also find it interesting. It's not that long and not very expensive so for me it's like, why not? I'm a big fan of self hypnosis as I used it to achieve a beautiful birth several years ago. Since then I have been kind of doing my own thing meditating but this book really helped me expand my mental exercises. It essentially gives a ton of different ways to explore your own psyche. I find it to be a very helpful guide to self hypnosis. The chapter on scary dreams tremendously helped me navigate this problem with my 5 year old daughter. Now each night before bed she gets so excited to go to her personal Fanstasyland, where we often deal with the things that are troubling her in a safe and self-empowered way. For this reason alone it was worth it to me (although there are some grammatical errors that can be annoying). Also I'm a lifelong student of astrology and I loved his combination of these two worlds, astrological archetypes and deep meditation. Good stuff.

This a fun book to read. Noel's writing style is informative and flows nicely. I have the Kindle version. Buy it you'll like it!!

Another fabulous book from Noel Eastwood! Love the method!

A well written book that shows a good understanding of basic hypnosis such that a beginner really cannot be led astray as is often the case. However there are now up to date Protocols that can be used by a Client that will harness the power of a number of Psychotherapies (such as Psychodynamic, Enhanced CBT and Psychosynthesis) which when delivered using Hypnotic language structures as an adjunct to the Psychotherapy tactics relevant to the unique individual, will always allow the Client to make good progress towards authenticity by taming those "Dragons". Having said all that I did enjoy the book!

I have the audible version of this book and am wondering if maybe there are parts that aren't being covered because I keep expecting more practical information that involves the clinical/therapeutic application for conflictive behaviors and actions people find themselves doing. One of the first stories he shares, does involve a client dealing with anger, but then it banks off into a very very dark world. Let me explain. Noel Eastwood writes an interesting book but it mainly spans the gamut of the esoteric without the benefit of solid and practical self-hypnosis strategies and suggestions. He shares accounts of certain client stories and many of his own personal experiences but much of it leaves you short of any expansive understanding as to how to apply self-hypnosis. He speaks to his own credentials as a therapist and healer; the esoteric, super natural or metaphysical realms he works in and I've NO doubt that he's a very good psycho-therapist with an intricate understanding on both topics. However, as it relates to the therapeutic and spiritual setting, in this book he pretty much mixes all of the above and yet the practical clinical emphasis of Hypnosis and Self-Hypnosis applied to common problems such as anxiety, depression, fear, self-doubt, phobia etc., takes a back seat and are only briefly mentioned. I might have appreciated the astral travel, past lives, reincarnation, OBE, dream deaths, guides, demons, etc., talk, if it were written specifically to address emo-spiritual consciousness issues and conflicts - and the strategic ways to handle them. Instead, pretty much every topic he writes about, has a colorful story attached, yet scant information on how to truly address what these things mean and how to use Trance to help. I felt as though the therapeutic uses of hypnotherapy were skimmed over.At the end, after he signs off verbally, he then comes back and adds an apex about how trance does or doesn't work and what the limits are to hypnotherapy. Finally, I'd suggest to anyone new to Hypnosis or self-hypnosis or anyone in need of emotional or spiritual therapy, that this book might not be for you - yet. It's heavy and in places has very frightening descriptions that could trigger intense fear in vulnerable or sensitive individuals.All in all, this book feels like it was meant as a show piece to highlight a personal resume which includes everything from Tarot to shamanism and with that, goods, services, and the website he's produced that goes with it.Yet having said all that, I do find him fascinating and interesting enough that I will be looking at his other works because he's sold me on the... 'I'm-a-healing-practitioner-who-has-dabbled-in-everything,' and I am an infinitely curious type. Some may say sucker. :)

Like all good biographies, this first full account of the life of Richard Daley does more than tell the story of an individual. In the course of telling Daley's tale--from his birth (in 1902) to his death (in 1976)--journalists Cohen and Taylor also chronicle the history of 20th-century Chicago. They capture the grittiness of Daley's boyhood--the day-to-day of life near the stockyards, the importance of ethnicity in local neighborhoods and the city's seemingly paradoxical combination of parochialism and diversity, dynamic growth and resistance to change. Initiated into machine politics as a young man, Daley quickly embraced the machine's values of order, allegiance, authority and, above all, the pursuit of power. Later, he ran the city in accordance with these values; the authors explain that he always assessed his options in terms of what would both enhance his power and encourage Chicagoans to stay in their proper place. Cohen (a senior writer at Time) and Taylor (literary editor and Sunday magazine editor of the Chicago Tribune) use the most famous crisis during his tenure, the 1968 Democratic convention, to illustrate how the mayor's rigid values dictated his actions--but more importantly, they say, his myopic passion for order worked together with his deep racism to shape modern Chicago. This is an uneven book. In the aggregate - it gives a great feel for the history of machine politics in Chicago, the roots and rise of Mayor Daley, the careful racial segregation of public housing, etc etc. I was looking for a view into Chicago history and I got an excellent one. I would say the book is way too detailed in many parts and found myself increasingly starting to surf through the book in search of more interesting sections. The sections on the 1960s, the role of the police, the 1968 convention - those are all WOW sections. But other parts of the book were excessively detailed and dry. You have to want to know a lot about Daley and Chicago political history to make it through this. In my case I actually did, but probably not for everyone.

A masterpiece that not only serves as a biography of Richard Daley, but shows us how the City of Chicago came to be what it is today. There have been some serious power brokers that have served as Mayors in America, but Richard Daley, in terms of acquiring and holding power, must rank at the top of that group. The book is detailed, but for those looking to see how municipal government works this might not be the book for you. In Chicago if Daley wanted it done it was done. Not a lot of grass roots organizing involved in getting decisions made and executed. The book properly focuses on how Daley's perch as Chair of the Cook County Democratic machine was just as valuable to him, in many respects, as the Mayors job, allowing him to exert control not only in Chicago, but across the entire State of Illinois. The Democratic Convention of 1968 is covered very well, and is a history that many of us are familiar with. What I learned beyond my prior understanding was how official and conscious government acts by Daley contributed to the segregated housing landscape that existed in Chicago at that time. He molded the City, and his vision did not include integration of housing. Daley, due to these policies, had to try to face down Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who came to Chicago to bring the civil rights movement to the urban north. Daley did not choose to overtly resist, but chose tactics that obfuscated his goals, promised progress, but delivered little.A fascinating book that should be read by all those interested in the acquiring and holding of power. Daley, from that perspective and on a smaller scale, rivaled LBJ as a power politician. The book honestly depicts some of the awful things he did, but does its best to give Daley some credit where it might have been due. Having just read the Tom Menino book I think it could be fairly said that Daley predated Menino in putting forward malapropisms. AMERICAN PHARAOH by Cohen and Taylor contains 614 pages and 16 pages of black and white (not glossy) photographs. The book focuses on Mr. Daley's technique of ensuring cooperation through the use of patronage jobs, and on Daley's methods for keeping black people segregated in black-only housing projects. Hundreds and hundreds of pages are devoted to race relations. However, topics relating to business development are given short shrift. Daley's methods for converting Chicago from its dilapidated state in the 1950s to the gleaming showpiece that it became in the 1970s receive only a few pages of writing. In this regard, AMERICAN PHARAOH is a strangely lopsided book.PATRONAGE JOBS. Patronage jobs are distinguished from civil service jobs. Patronage jobs are awarded by ward bosses, while civil service jobs are not. The mayor preceding Daley (Martin Kennelly) was anti-patronage and had a war on patronage. He had insisted on using civil service exams in the hiring methods. Patronage workers are government workers who knew their jobs were at stake, unless they contributed time and money to election campaigns. (pages 92, 116, 121, 122). Chicago had 50 wards. Each ward was allotted a number of patronage jobs. For example, Daley's political base, the 11th ward, had 2,000 patronage jobs (p. 156). For any given branch of city government, from 50-75% might be patronage jobs. Each job applicant needed to document his precinct work, in applying for the job. For Daley's benefit, each patronage job was equivalent to getting ten free votes (p. 159).PASSIVE HYPOCRACY. When faced with issues of segregation in schools or public housing, or violence in public housing, Daley responded with "vague expressions of sympathy," that is, with "passive hypocracy." Daley's passive hypocracy is described on pages 134, 172, 322, 340, 403, 410, 431, and 465.WHY BLACKS VOTED FOR DALEY. Although Daley was against open housing and school integration, blacks voted for him because he handed out patronage jobs (p. 301-302, 339). What also helped Daley is that blacks accepted school segregation, as they didn't want their kids in hostile white schools (p. 437). Also, blacks (e.g., Kenneth Campbell) worked against school boycotts, while other blacks (e.g., Wendell Green) were apologists for the racist superintendent of public schools (Benjamin Willis) (p. 313-314).DALEY BUILT BARRIERS TO KEEP SLUMS FROM EXPANDING. Daley used Ryan Expressway (7 lanes in each direction) to separate the white south side from the black belt (p. 188-189, 229). Daley razed 100 acres of slums in between the black belt and the Loop, and in its place built middle class apartments, with rents that would keep poor blacks away (Lake Meadows; Prairie Shores) (p. 176-177). These new apartments were built near important employers (Ill. Inst. Technology, Reese Hospital). In planning the Univ. Illinois at Chicago, Daley made certain that it was built in the Harrison-Halsted neighborhood, just west of the Loop. The goal was for the campus to act as a barrier between black housing to the west (Addams House) and the Loop. In ten years, Harrison-Halsted neighborhood became a white neighborhood (p. 224-233). Slums in Hyde Park (near Univ. Illinois) were razed and replaced with middle class private apartments (University Apartments). Once occupied, the average income in the area increased 70%. University Apts stood as a barrier between the University and the ghettos to the north.BLACK VS. WHITE HOUSING PROJECTS. To ensure the desired location of new black housing projects, Daley selected his own executive (Alvin Rose) for the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA). In other words, to ensure that new housing projects would be black-only, Daley had them built only in black neighborhoods (p. 201). Massive housing projects were built in 1966. These were black-only (Hilliard, Ickes, Dearborn, Stateway, and Taylor) and white-only (Trumbull Park, Lathrop, Lawndale Gardens). The CHA kept separate waiting lists for the black projects and white projects (p. 331-334). The black housing projects were considered to be "filing cabinets for the poor" and were populated by a disproportionate number of single mothers (p. 183-188).FUND-RAISING TECHNIQUES. To ensure that people would vote for his bond initiatives, Daley made certain to have them decided in low-turnout elections, that is, April elections, where he could count on votes from his patronage employees (p. 289). To ensure an increased sales tax, Daley side-stepped the voters in city elections, and made use of a loophole that allowed state legislature instead to vote for approval of the city tax. This resulted in more funds for an exposition center, airport, highways, and mass transit (p. 166).DALEY'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS. In the years before Daley, Chicago was in the state of decline, with losses in manufacturing jobs. Sales in the Loop were plummeting (p. 164). Daley managed to get funding to improve city clinics, street lights, potholes, street sweeping, water fluoridation, paving roads (p. 167-169). Daley's contribution to O'Hare Airport was to convince the airlines to absorb the cost of operating and expanding the airport. O'Hare was the world's only self-supporting airport (taxes were not used) (p. 233-237). The Loop revival (1955 to 1970) included Prudential Building, Sears Tower, Equitable Building, Gateway Center, One and Two Illinois Center, Dirksen federal court, Kluczynski Building, Marina City (p. 292-293, 504-505). To ensure success in the Loop revival, Daley hired talented "whiz kids," not patronage workers (p. 373-377). McCormick Place is another Daley accomplishment (p. 293, 433, 510).ELIZABETH WOOD. The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) was established in 1937, and the mayor at the time (Kelly) appointed Elizabeth Wood. Wood's philosophy was "managed integration" where blacks would be moved into a white project, but not in numbers(10-15%) enough to inspire whites to move away, and to make sure that when a white moved out he was replaced with another white. Wood tried to convince CHA to admit blacks to all-white projects. Also, her plan was to admit only higher quality blacks to housing projects (and to refuse the criminal element). Wood refused to hire patronage workers. Eventually, Wood was forced out, and she moved to New York City. Of course, all of Wood's innovations were eliminated, resulting in a return to strictly all black and all white housing projects (p. 70, 101-109).FRANCIS KEPPEL. Francis Keppel was U.S. commissioner for education. His job was to ensure compliance with Civil Rights Act of 1964, which required integration standards be met in order to receive federal money for schools. If Chicago failed to meet the integration standards, Chicago would lose $32 million. At this time, controversy surrounded these schools: Fenger (white only), Altgelt (black only), Orr (white only), and Marshall (black only). On Oct. 1, 1965, Keppel declared Chicago schools to be in non-compliance with Civil Rights Act. But Daley fought back by insisting on an investigation of Keppel, and by consulting President Johnson (LBJ). LBJ caved in to Daley's request because LBJ wanted Daley's support in the upcoming 1968 election. Keppel was then removed from his position as watchdog for the Civil Rights Act, and Daley got the federal money (p. 335-336, 350-353).CONCLUSION. As is evident, most of the book is about race relations. If you need details of Daley's accomplishments relating to business, economic development, highways, transportation, manufacturing, and such, one might want to consult another source.
