Oh my, I've only read four chapters so far but I can't take it anymore. It goes like this: I became CMO, but the company wasn't ready for my amazing plans yet, so I quit. I like to go for a jog to think, so after 10 miles I still didn't know what to do. So I meditated for 10 days, and i still didn't know. Then I realized, i should be the CEO of a marketing firm. This book is so full of bragging and at the same time there is zero useful applicable information in it. The only people who might like this is someone that loves to brag and wants to be like Ferrazzi or one that never even heard the term networking.

Keith Ferrazzi’s Never Eat Alone tackles one of the most important aspects of getting ahead in the professional world today: networking. Ferrazzi’s approach, however, takes a different turn than most networking books. His emphasis on creating connections, as opposed to blindly networking just because its considered important, is informative and distinctive.Ferrazzi begins by laying out his experience with networking in the first section – but he doesn’t call it “networking.” Instead, Ferrazzi calls it “connecting.” He writes that “like business itself, being a connector is not about managing transactions, but about managing relationships.” He stresses that while some gather names and phone numbers just to add contacts to their list, the most beneficial way to connect is to share knowledge, resources, time, energy, friends, associates, empathy and compassion. By doing this, value is provided for these connections – and perhaps most importantly, your value is increased in their eyes as well. This first section is a smooth and engaging introduction to the book. Ferrazzi’s conversational tone makes his suggestions easy to follow and understand. He writes often about his personal experiences with networking, which strengthens his argument of the importance of connecting. Without connections, he would not have made it to where he is now. His impressive education came out of the relationships he and his father developed with connections, which definitely drives home his argument.Ferrazzi lays out how to actually make these connections in the second section. He writes that the first step to connecting with someone is to do your research. He suggests Googling them, reading their work history on LinkedIn, checking out their Twitter, and reading information about their company or work. The next step is getting their contact information. Ferrazzi suggests starting with those already in your network: relatives, current colleagues, customers and clients, neighbors, past connections from school, former teachers, etc. Ferrazzi writes, “the real challenge isn’t tracking anymore… Our challenge these days is to figure out, in the mass of contacts we’ve collected, which ones matter” (76). His approach to building a network is to reach out to those you already have relationships with, and to build on them. This section is helpful, but nothing stood out as exceptionally different from other networking books. Networking is meeting people through other connections and cultivating relationships – Ferrazzi just stresses its importance in this section. In the third section, Ferrazzi discusses building on these connections. He breaks down three motivations that he tends to find in people: making money, finding love, or changing the world. He says that “the only way to get people to do anything is to recognize their importance and thereby make them feel important” (175). He also emphasizes building connections in different areas, and being able to “parcel out as much information, contacts, and goodwill to as many people – in as many different worlds – as possible” (188). He highlights the importance of meeting people and connecting, but building on these connections and stretching them to all aspects of business and life. This section is informative, but Ferrazzi’s reasoning seems manipulative. The purpose of networking is to gain value from those we connect with, but Ferrazzi seems to imply that the only reason to help others is because of the future benefit you may receive from them. For Ferrazzi, connecting with others is ultimately for your gain. His approach seems to disregard the fact that you might receive something other than just professional gain from helping someone. The fourth section focuses on “Connecting in the Digital Age.” Ferrazzi tackles the wealth of knowledge and people that we have at our disposal because of technology. He writes that even though you can be bombarded with information on your social network, you can make use of the content by curating and structuring it to what you want to see, and what will help you. He also says that in sharing your content, you have to give people “something useful.” “Give them an article, a film trailer, a restaurant review. Something that allows for more communication than 140 characters, introduces them to something new, and gives them an action” (242-243).This section is beneficial in laying out all the ways for you to make use of the technology at your fingertips. Instead of getting overwhelmed at the content on social networking sites, you can make use of it. Now, more than ever, taking advantage of technology is important in the professional world, and this portion of the book provides tools to help you do that. The final section mostly provides techniques for strengthening your connection circle but also marketing yourself. As Ferrazzi wrote earlier in the book, “each of us is now a brand” (22). According to him, you have to be an expert with a unique point of view – you have to be interesting. Image and identity are just the start of your personal brand. With a network, your brand “establishes your worth” and “takes your mission and content and broadcasts it to the world” (291).This chapter on personal branding – Chapter 26, “Build Your Brand” – was probably the most useful and informative out of the book. Ferrazzi discusses developing a personal branding message, “packaging” the brand (which involves appearance and style, and asking yourself how you wish to be seen), and broadcasting your brand. According to Ferrazzi, “the world is your stage… Look the part; live the part” (297).Overall, Never Eat Alone is an informative networking book. Its main idea is innovative – connecting and sharing as opposed to just collecting important names in your network – compared to the majority of other networking books. Ferrazzi, in his conversational tone, makes the 376 pages go fast. The only downside to Ferrazzi’s approach is his push to do all of this – connect, share, network – just because in the end, it helps you advance the most. His method comes across as slightly egotistical, but it still provides you with helpful tips to connecting and branding yourself.

As a 20 yr professional and manager I wasn't sure of how relevant this book would be. Frankly I found it to be excellent! I have ranked it as 5 stars, something I rarely do.Ferrazzi covers a range of topics which are as relevant for those veterans in the workforce as those starting out. One item I found especially refreshing was the approach to networking. A buzzword these days, I see millenials and others "lunching" constantly and asking to join my LinkedIn or Facebook and then never hear from them again. Ferrazzi does an excellent job explaining that networking has to be about adding value to the other party and maintaining that relationship over time. Yes, we all leverage our networks to get things done. The point is to ensure it is a two way street.I also found his discussion of how to get value from conferences extremely interesting. I had learned many of the lessons the hard way over the year but I had never heard them so well articulated- come prepared, understand your objectives, who do you want to meet, what are your intersect points, volunteer to help organize, understand the schedule and layout and finally, and most important, follow up.This book is an excellent read and a marked up copy now sits on my core reference shelf. Whether you are starting out or a veteran, this is worth a read.

Ferrazzi is no doubt an expert in his field but, my goodness, does he like to brag about himself. There are good messages in this book, but you have to dig through painfully long passages of self-fellatio in order to get to the actual points. The authors boastful tone is extremely off putting and his anecdotes reek of egomania.

5 years later, I'm still recommending this book to people to read. This book is for the ambitious looking for a social edge in working their way into the successful portion of the working class. It's a blend of inspiration, motivation, pragmatic advice, and sometimes painfully boring passages. If you have the skills to recognize impertinent chapters that would bore rather than aid you, and find the juicy stuff that you know you can learn from, this book can grow your career the same way it grew my own.Good luck and have fun ;-)

#870,565 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I don't want this to come off as a hit job so I am going to mention what I liked about the book before I go into what I found disappointing about the book. The ASYNCIO section is the best part of the book and it does the best job of explaining coroutines and the event loop that I have found yet. The Celery section was good and it inspired me to go check out the project. The Parallel Python section was OK but didn't go into enough detail. The book really needs the attention of an editor that is skilled in editing English. The text, especially in the beginning of the book is pretty bad. There are a lot of misused words and garbled phrases. Also there were many instances of poor word choices and strange sentences. The treatment of multithreading and multiprocessing in this book is very superficial. When discussing the ProcessPoolExecutor and ThreadPoolExcecutor the author didn't even mention Future, as_completed, wait and Executor.map. These are key features of the concurrent.futures module. Also the examples of using the Executors was poor and should be considered an anti-pattern. If you were to try and create a multithreaded/multiprocess application of any complexity, just using the info in this book, you wouldn't be successful. There's nothing on how to us the various Locks or about how queue.Queue is thread safe and doesn't need to be guarded. If you followed the examples in the book you would assume that the Queue was not thread safe.Hopefully there will be a new release with these deficiencies corrected.

3 stars. A somewhat thin volume that fails to dive into sufficient detail; it's not a bad overview of the subject but treatment of the topics (multithreading and multiprocessing) is weak. This book felt more like a university term paper overview of the subject than a textbook and I didn't come away feeling like I had gained the depth of knowledge worthy of the effort reading it.Code examples didn't contribute sufficiently to the discussion or fail to clearly demonstrate the topic at hand. For instance, the Fibonacci series code felt contrived and added needless complexity to what could have been a clear demonstration of refactoring for threading. A few diagrams showing thread state (especially w/r/t/ join) would have helped make this discussion clear. Does it cover the subject? Yes. Does it teach it? Not really. My greatest disappointment is with the brief and vague discussion of the python Global Interpreter Lock (the core of the issue with Python's difficulty with multithreading). In my opinion it is the essense of the subject - I hoped to see a thorough explanation and numerous strategies for ways to work around Python's GIL limitations but this book never really delivered. Some comparisons to multithreading and parallel programming in other common languages would have been illustrative (for instance: C, C#, Java, Ruby) but making these suggestions should be the job of the editors.I am sorry to say I believe one would be better off with a few hours spent chasing links on Google. Sadly PACKT publishing is leaving a rather poor impression with me. PACKT editors need to push back on authors and insist on a more thorough exploration of topics. This is the third PACKT book in a row I've purchased that disappoints. I don't think I will volunteer for a forth experience.

The most important drawback of this book is a lack of details on python implementations of parallel computational paradigm. Recomended as a first step.

Good book but not useful.

Great book and very easy to understand!

Parallel Programming is an increasingly hot topic in today's IT circles. For those who ponder why I can tell in short it is because of the CPU clock speeds stagnation. We, software engineers, are dealing with ever increasing volumes of data and are asked to deliver even faster, more robust applications and websites. This is tough. Parallel Programming is the answer. I hope I whet your appetite for exploring the Parallel Programming so now I can switch the focus to the book.It is not terribly long. Not costly either. In fact if you care I managed to read it whole in 3 hours plus (stats are from my ebook reader app) and managed to run a few examples that worked on my laptop with Windows 7. I am planning on running more examples later on a POSIX machine. Thing with the examples is they are classic ones: the Fibonacci series which is boring to me and far from what anybody would be dealing with at work and web crawling which is better done using say Nutch. The same code examples go through the entire book, just different techniques applied. What I wish Jan had done is explaining at least what technique helps in what case in real life. My other pet peeves are that there was no mention on how to leverage the GPU, how to eliminate the For Loops - this is actually a must in my opinion, and there was no coverage on how to debug parralel processes. Let me stop at debugging a tad longer: since Python allows mutability it becomes critical to exterminate nasty mutation bugs!In terms of closing, I have an advice to the author: it is hard to write a technical book, but I wish it could be longer and covered more ground, another advice is to the publisher, this book qualifies for the "Instant" moniker type of the books from Packt. By the way I like your website redesign!Three stars out of five.

There are, at present, only four laws of thermodynamics acknowledged by science. A recent book, deeply rooted in the four laws but going in a new direction is, Design in Nature: How the Constructal Law Governs Evolution in Biology, Physics, Technology and Social Organization.Written by leading thermodynamics theorist Adrian Bejan and J. Peder Zane, this is probably one of the most important books on the social and political aspects of thermodynamics written in the past ten years but for two very different reasons. One: the author brilliantly describes an implicit law or potential first principle of nature, the Constructal Law, which describes how the tendency for an increasing and more efficient movement of mass and energy through time is ruled by a physical law. This, the book asserts, naturally creates many complex designs that we see in nature that do not violate the laws of thermodynamics. The second reason, which is not quite so flattering, is that his book clearly describes the approach of the modern mind—that despite all his arguing to the contrary, points in the direction that consciousness is either a feature of matter and energy or “the designer” cannot be conceived properly using the imagery of Bejan’s schoolboy God.Bejan absolutely fails to describe what should be obvious to all but not to those who refuse to look: that the universe is, from the point of view of common sense, not unintelligently self-assembling and that a postulated Fifth Law, negentropy, which assumes some sort of teleology in the universe, really needs to be looked at more closely for a more accurate and scientific accounting of the universe.Let’s look closely at what Bejan says:“Of course, there is no conscious intelligence behind these patterns, no Divine Architect churning out brilliant blueprints. To pre-empt any confusion, let me make this perfectly clear: The constructal law is not headed toward a creationist argument, and in no way does it support the claims of those who promulgate the fantasy of intelligent design… [How can he possibly know this from a scientific perspective? Better to take a more agnostic and humble position as in: “we don’t know-period”]. Bejan goes on to say: this raises the question: How come? What causes the constructal law? The short answer: we don’t know. The constructal law is what is known in science as a first principle, an idea that cannot be deduced or derived from other laws (if it could, it would be a theorem. It just is—a law of physics that governs the emergence of macroscopic shape and structure in nature. The constructal law tells us why those patterns arise and empowers us to predict how they should change in the future. It reveals that it is not love or money that makes the world go round but flow and design.”This is quite amusing from a metaphysical perspective. He knows that intelligent design is a “fantasy” but he doesn’t know why the constructal law works. Just make up first principles and poof—no need to inquire further. This sort of argument, much like natural selection being pimped as the only motor of evolution, is a partial explanation posing as a final theory.Entropy does create efficient dispersion patterns from original energy sources, and it is also observably true that all flow systems tend to generate better and more complex conduits for the currents that flow through them due to relational factors such as gravity, pressure, time and temperature. This “tendency” simply described doesn’t tell us why such systems should accumulate ever increasing amounts of energy, but it does very well describe the energy output of vice. The tendency of flow systems towards complex arrangements for dispersal, and even self-organization, does not adequately describe moral and intellectual excellence or the human tendency to invest enormous amounts of energy into beliefs and other systems, except as a kind of contextual background for the way all material things behave. If we took Bejan’s analysis seriously, we would have to conclude that all human activity was simply a way of dispersing excess energy—perhaps more like a complex drainage system than the kind of meaning typically ascribed to human activity. What would be the point of organisms, considered as a whole, to harvest energy in ever more complex ways only to then disperse or get rid of it? There is no sense of teleology in Bejan’s system, although he would probably ascribe such meaning to the complex interplay of various forms of energy. I liken this to showing up at a sumptuous banquet in a palace with thousands of well-dressed guests in attendance and arguing that there is no host. The tendency to invest energy into complex systems of machinery and thought might be thought of as being somewhat alien to the constructal law, except by way of appearance, and much more closely related to negentropy or the tendency to wind things up. Note how negative entropy is described in the dictionary: “Negative entropy, or negentropy, roughly refers to the degree of order or organization within a closed system.” That is only part of what negentropy might mean. Here is an alternative scientific opinion.“There are, technically speaking, only Four Laws of Thermodynamics but a Fifth Law of Thermodynamics has been proposed by physicist Philip Carr:“The missing link in thermodynamics as taught in schools today seems to be a concise explanation of why order and structures abound in a universe purported to be driven by a Second Law [popularly known as the Law of Entropy] that states that disorder increases, always and everywhere. This short note is provided in order to stimulate discussion around a possible Fifth Law which predicts what we observe, which is that order and structures should actually predominate in the world in which we live.” Based on this model and observations the proposed 5th Law of Thermodynamics criticizes the notion of stochastically generated order."An open system containing a large mixture of similar automatons, placed in contact with a non-equilibrated environment, has a finite probability of supporting the spontaneous generation and growth of self-constructing machines of unlimited complexity."This proposed Fifth Law of Thermodynamics is also known, in some circles, as negentropy. Negentropy was proposed by the physicist Schrödinger as a kind of free energy that accumulates within systems that store energy but it is facetious to assume that the storage of extra energy might necessarily result in greater order, (and complexity) except by way of increasing the means of storage. The Fifth Law of Thermodynamics supports the notion of creation by an outside force such as the Unmoved Mover or God.So, let’s get back to Existence. Existence does NOT exist—it IS. Something that does not exist generates all that exists. Energy and mass exist. Therefore, there are only two possible conclusions regarding origin. One: energy is eternal, and concomitantly, consciousness may only be a higher order feature of energy and mass. This is the position of an elevated atheism. Two: all that exists depends on something that does not exist. This is the philosophical and metaphysical explanation of Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas that leaves the door open to providence, grace, honor and beauty. The former is a closed universe going nowhere. When you die you return to energy for re-cycling. End of story. The world of negentropy preserves a universe where honor, beauty and goodness are desirable for more than just subjective reasons. Where is the goodness and beauty in the cold atheism of abortion or the moral weirdness of sexual perversion? The desire for a stochastic or randomly generated universe is a moral-free universe from the perspective of objective morality. A stochastic universe fits the process morality of pure subjectivity and is the universal choice of moralists on the left. Make no mistake about it. The present political tension in the US is really about atheistic morality versus the flawed but traditional morality of the Founders. Conservatives, for all their faults, tend to support the intent of the Founders. What the left thinks it is supporting, in regards to many issues, is nothing but entropy in the guise of concern.Throw a set of marbles down and watch them roll. They will describe a random pattern of energy dispersion based on various resistances of friction, gravity, direction, etc. What the pattern does not tell you is who threw the marbles. For a more interesting analysis of causality than that implicitly presented by Bejan, turn to God Has Skin in the Game: How a New Understanding of Politics and the Soul Could Change America by Sean O'Reilly

Adrian Bejan is a brilliant engineer and an invaluable asset to the scientific community. His theory on Constructal Law seeks to bridge the gap between the many long believed disparate fields of study. A must read for any physics/science enthusiasts, or those with a genuine interest in the underpinnings of reality.

Design in Nature Adrian BejanI love it when ideas from disparate fields come together; it is the source of the thoughtful "Aha" moment. Bejan's thesis is the patterns we see in nature are the result of a constructal law that favors efficiency of flow. He posits the 3rd law of thermodynamics."Where the second law describes the universal tendency to flow from high to low, the constructal law describes the universal tendency to generate evolving configurations that facilitate flow. … Together they capture nature much more firmly than the second law alone."While Bejan disavows any spiritual or atheistic intent the only reasonable conclusion is that there is an interconnectedness to all of life, what we view as animate, as well as what appears inanimate that is very ‘Buddhist' in nature. That particular strand of thought is found in The Quantum and the Lotus.I have enjoyed the work of Gerald Diamond, in particular, Guns, Germs and Steel, which takes a more geographical approach to our historical narrative. This lead me to Manual De Landa, who is somewhat more difficult to access (it needs to seep in) whose 1000 years of Non-Linear History describe "the self-directed processes of matter and energy interacting with the whim and will of human history itself to form a panoramic vision of the West … the source of all concrete forms in the West's history are shown to derive from internal morphogenetic capabilities that lie within the flow of matter-energy itself. Bejan's constructal law is a first principle description of both Diamond's and De Landa's work. And I found the Bejan's explanation was more simplified and easier to digest.I found Design in nature to be an energizing book and in a fractal or scaling way an excellent example of the constructal law Bejan describes and promotes. It is readily understandable to a lay audience, most of the math is stripped away, and it provides a view that well may be the early tremor of a paradigm shift in scientific thought.

Todo bien

Helps to explain some of the more complex deign features in Nature, that can seem implausible otherwise.

I just loved it. Myself being an engineer and a "Darwinian", the Constructal Law of Adrian Bejan opened new insights in front of me. I am looking at things around me "moving" and trying to figure out how that motion could fit into this new physics law and "design in nature". Just wonderful..
