Some complain that Osborn's "very simple introduction" does not do justice to the scope and depth of Girard's theory. It is a very simple introduction! As such, it more than fulfilled the promise of the title. I believe first time readers would have their interests in mimetic theory piqued. And, I found the basic explanations perfectly clear without compromising the integrity of Gorard's insights. Pass it along!
There's a lot of information packed into this small, adorable book. The one downside to this book...it has made me want a hat.
Although this book barely skims the surface of Girard's thought, it has been enough to intrigue the dozen or so people I have shared it with, and convinced them Girard is someone they would want to investigate. As the title says, it's a very simple introduction!
I bought two of these, thinking the book might be truly valuable to members of my family, who see me absorbed in Girard a lot of the time. IT WAS A MISTAKE. This sorry little comic book convinced them that Rene Girard is a trivial writer. My daughter said, "Who doesn't know this?" Girard is NOTHING if not subtle and astoundingly profound. The depth and worth of his insights are not even touched, not to mention incomplete. Do NOT buy this thing to help an uninstructed person "get" Rene Girard! I almost see it as from the enemy himself. And so soon after Rene's death. It should be bypassed as garbage.
Carly Osborn has achieved the almost impossible task of simplifying without diluting the disarmingly simple yet infinitely nuanced and erudite thinking of René Girard. This is the book I wish I had written. As one who has struggled for years to clarify and make simply understandable for ordinary folks the incomparably prescient, incredibly wide-ranging and arrestingly sophisticated scholarship of René Girard, I found this book a God-send. I have given away dozens of copies and use it in every theology and faith formation class I teach. Hurrah to Carly Osborn for providing all of us a primer on Girard that can be used in 7th grade religion classes as well as doctoral seminars on Nietzsche!
