If you are the kind of parent who believes your children can be wonderful hood ornaments on the vehicle of your personal success, this is the book for you.The author abhors public schools because, as he says, they have to accept EVERYBODY (ugh!). He favors and supports boarding school education for children as young as first grade (only about five years old) so that they can live in a warm, morally consistent (but unloving) environment all year long, and because he feels that the child and his parents will then share only happy memories of carefree summers and holidays, with none of that messy and mutually irritating go-clean-up-your-room-and-do-your-homework fuss and muss.In other words, he seems to believe that children are better raised by goal-oriented institutions, who see their students as a product being readied for the marketplace, than by their parents rearing their own offspring as a gesture of love and tenderness.As a teacher, and as aparent of private-school kids, I found the author's attitude completely offensive, and I have to say that this is the kind of material that gives private-school families a bad name. I would have given it a "1" rating -- especially because the author supports his point of view with speciously derived and manipulated statistics -- but undoubtedly there are parents who do subscribe to his point of view, and will benefit from this book.

While I would agree with others that there is a definite (especially in the introduction) bias towards private schools, that is to be expected - the book's title says how to pick the BEST private school; not whether private or public schools are better.Some great topics covered by this book:1) What time is the best to enroll in private school (if the child is already in school and will be transferring)?2) Is it better to pay for private K-12 or a college education if funds are limited?3) What accreditation is important in selecting a private school? (And not to confuse accreditation with certification!)4) Which is better academically, parochial or independent schools?

This is my 2nd order of the book, I loaned my first copy to someone and purchased a 2nd copy just in case. The book cover was a mess and pretty disgusting. However, the pages are in great shape. I wish the author would update the book, the information is excellent. I used this book as reference when searching school options 3 years ago. My son is in 7th grade in a junior boarding school and I plan to use the index in this book to research high school options in the next year. We followed the advice in the book and my son loves the school he attends. It was his choice and a perfect fit.A humorous note, my son attended the summer program at this school before applying to the school. He purchased a school bow tie during the summer. Not sure when if I would get my $30 out of a bow tie, I suggested he wear it to his interview. During his interview, the admission director paused the interview and requested a photo - he noticed my son was dressed head to toe in the exact same outfit. My son lives by the nickname "Mini-me" and we still laugh about it.

I found myself mesmerized by the amazing world the author created and that i literally forgot all else that was going on around me. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves tales of romance and abundant joy. There was the perfect amount of humor and energy to keep the reader happy. I wish I could rate this book with more than five stars as it deserves no less. Excellent!!!!

I am an 11 year old girl writing a review on my mom's account. I love this book because it's not childish like the Disney Beauty and the Beast. I couldn't put it down. I fell in love with the characters in this book. This is the first book I have read by Robin McKinley. The story is very sweet. I felt like I was in the story.You get to follow this young woman's life, starting out from being wealthy in the city. Her father's job doesn't end up working out. (She's motherless...) They have to move to the country where her brother in law grew up. They're the only ones very close to the "enchanted" forest. Her father gets lost and goes to the castle. After that there is a sweet romance that you fall in love with. I loved this story! It's great for kids 10+... I think that both boys and girls would enjoy this. I did!

The great thing about a fantasy is that some of it is timeless. That is totally the case with Beauty. It was originally published in 1978 shhhh but when you pick it up it is really a tale as old as time but it can be told throughout these decades seamlessly. It could as easily been published last month and because it is fantasy you’d never know.Why I liked this Re-Telling:It’s a classic beauty and the beast retelling the one I remember from my own childhood with an enchanted castle, the rose, the curse.*** Ger strode forwards and caught him in his arms as he staggered, and then half carried him to a seat near the fire. As he sank down with a sigh we all noticed that in his hand he held a rose: a great scarlet rose, bigger than any we had seen before, in full and perfect bloom. “Here, Beauty,” he said to me, and held it out. I took it, my hand trembling a little, and stood gazing at it. I had never seen such a lovely thing. ***I also saw where Disney might have got some of there ideas from. There are mysterious voices and servants in the castle that are invisible and always trying to ‘help’ Beauty with getting dressed and dancing a parade of food in front of her at meal times to chose from.The Castle itself is amazing with rooms that move and melodious giggling winds that try to direct you around the place. As soon as you start to feel lost just go around the corner and your room will be there.The Beast was sweet and charming and my heart broke for him as he tried to get close to a reluctant beauty. He has been lonely for so long and it really showed through in the story.*** “You fainted,” he said; his voice was a rough whisper. “I caught you before you reached the floor. You—you might have hurt yourself. I only wanted to lay you down somewhere that you could be comfortable.” I stared at him, still kneeling, with my fingernails biting into the sofa cushions. I couldn’t look away from him, but I did not recognize what I saw. “You—you clung to me,” he said, and there was a vast depth of pleading in his voice. ***This is a perfect story for MG and YA readers for an introduction to fantasy writing as well as great for older readers that want to feel transported back to their younger selves.DownfallsIf you are a semi-book snob like me you’d miss this book because it is ‘too old’. But I challenge everyone to get past that way of thinking at least in the fantasy genre.It takes a little time to pick up. The beginning was slightly slow for me especially as they are traveling out of the city to their new lives in the country. I sometimes get really board during traveling….just me. But once they are settled in the country and all the tales of the magical enchanted wood start cropping up I was totally hooked.*** “It’s said there’s a castle in a wild garden at the center of these woods; and if you ever walk into the trees till you are out of sight of the edge of the forest and you can see nothing but big dark trees all around you, you will be drawn to that castle; and in the castle there lives a monster. He was a man once, some tales say, and was turned into a terrible monster as a punishment for his evil deeds; some say he was born that way, as a punishment to his parents, who were king and queen of a good land but cared only for their own pleasure.” ***OverallThis is a beautiful retelling of a classic story with great imagery, a strong heroine and fantastic language in the telling. Totally worth a read.

I was disappointed at how this book ended as I have been a fan of Robin McKinley’s other works. But unfortunately, I have no other way to describe my reaction to finishing this; I was reluctant to give it two stars but I must be honest.The strengths of this novel include a detailed and interesting backstory for the Beauty of the classic tale, and a lot of interesting descriptive details added to the castle and environment itself, but at the unnecessary expense of almost anything else. The specifics of the magic system that underlies the carefully described setting are not explained, the results are merely reported, and the details of the underlying curse poorly mentioned in a pitiful paragraph in the final chapter leaving more questions than answers. The Beast is sadly underdeveloped, with almost no sense of personality or internal drives or struggles (spoiler: he literally HAS NO NAME), likewise is the relationship between the titular characters fleshed out in any sort of meaningful way. We are talking Anakin and Padme levels of why-are-you-interested, your-love-has-no-basis-in-anything, here. Indeed, it seems like the moral of this version of the story is that if you hang around someone who is minimally nice to you long enough, particularly if circumstances create little to no natural conflict...like, say, living in a magic castle that caters to your every whim with absolutely no effort or purpose on your part but pure enjoyment....you too can develop strong feelings for that person or whatever it is that is the sole available interpersonal interaction. The ending was one of the most blatant and obnoxious deus ex machinas I’ve ever read, and the “crisis” that begat it made no sense.In short: Everyone in this story is a nice, sweet, honorable person; at the beginning most are upper middle class bordering on rich, then they become merely middle class, then an obnoxiously wealthy person gives them some stuff just because even though they were already on the way to regaining their upper middle class status so now they are actually rich. Everyone falls in love and gets married and is beautiful. A horse is there.I have a lot of affection for this particular fairy tale and I’m greatly saddened that this version was not more fleshed out before publication; even the DISNEY cartoon had more sense of story and struggle, with villains and motives and overcoming obstacles. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone, which is sad because I wanted it to be better.

Ruth Saberton's books are an auto-buy for me. Her words, her turn of phrase, her delightful descriptions of Cornwall draw me in and wrap around me like a warm blanket. I have read all her books (some twice) and I have loved them all to pieces.The Letter is simply a masterpiece. It is a finely crafted, well-researched story, threaded delicately through 1914 to the present.Like Ruth's other Cornwall novels, the warmth of the characters jumps off the pages. The Cornwall countryside is familiar, even to those of us who have never visited.I highly recommend this book.

Disclaimer: I don’t write many reviews. I should do better about that. That being said, I could not let anymore time pass before I wrote this.There are plenty of reviews here that give you a summery of the story, so I won’t do that. What I will do is tell you that I am an avid reader of several different genres, love stories being one of my least favorite kind of stories. Typically because they are mostly the same story told with different twists.This is a love story, but it is so much more. It is about history, it has mystery, it is a story about growth and healing. The Letter captivated me almost immediately and I am still haunted by it several days after finishing it. I know this will be one of my classics that I will read again and again. It is one of “those” books that the characters feel like an old friend after the book is done and you’ll know you will miss them.I have a new favorite author on my list.

What a poignant love story in England during the war. Kit and Daisy are prevented by class distinctions from having the approval to marry, and Kit is declared missing in action. Daisy spends her life believing he will somehow return and she is protective of his poetry. Present day and the past alternate chapters. A young widow/artist is trying to restart her life. She gets caught up in researching the old manor where Kit was born, and a small box of Daisy's treasures and journal discovered in the old Rectory. Loving and bittersweet memories of the past are uncovered. I had difficulty putting the book down.In reading about the author, I discovered she writes under several different names. I am definitely going to look into reading her other novels.

What a profound book! 2 eras make the book fascinating, present time and WW1. Chloe loses her husband to cancer. Lost in grief, she moves to Cornwell. There she seeks the lives of Daisy and Kit, who lived a century before. Following the lives of the characters was so special. Kit, maimed by war never returned to Daisy. Yet their love lived on. Chloe is able to move on to the future, yet hold the past as part of her. Such a wonderful story. So many lives changed by the events. This book was so hard to put down. I wanted to know the whole story. The events of the past, and the future shape our lives. Love, loss, and the continuation of life are found. Thank you to the writer for touching my heart in a special way.

Amazon kept on sending me this book as a suggestion for me to read and eventually they were successful when I saw that this story is set in Cornwall. I no longer live in England but Cornwall will always hold a lot of childhood memories for me and will always remain one of my favourite places. I spent some time near Fowey with my Mother when I was a small child and my Father was away in the 2nd World War. Coincidentally enough we also had my maiden Great Aunt living with us. She, like Ella and Daisy, lost her fiancée in the Great War. This novel really made me feel my Great Aunt's loss. I really had her feelings of sorrow and loneliness brought home to me. So many young women were left to spend their lives alone and struggling to make a living in more difficult times for women than we have today. Even if a woman wanted to move on and be married and have a family, they were unable to do so because there were so few men available. I have always felt that the Great War was the worst of any and I have read about the horrors in other books.However, I cannot tell you how much I loved this authors account of the love story between Daisy and Kit. How terribly sad it was for so many and the author has painted such a realistic and heart rending picture of the finality of these two lovers. It made me cry a little and I wasn't sure if I was crying for Daisy and Kit or for my Aunt and all of the couples who suffered the same fate.The descriptions took me right there to Cornwall and I am more determined than ever that I shall return to spend more time in that beautiful county of my home country.I shall definitely try another of Ruth Saberton's novels and I wish her much success in her future writings. I highly recommend this book.

A wonderful and intriguing love story ...it is the simultaneous story of the present day Chloe whose husband Neil had passed away from cancer...she starts over in Cornwall and meets Matt when she volunteers for the local historical society honoring Kit Rivers a WW I poet that seemed to vanish after the Great War leaving behind a small number of poems about the horrors of war....the story of Kit and his forbidden love of Daisy unfolds through the hidden diary that Chloe finds under the floorboards in her tower room...a beautiful and tragic love story as well as a story of new found love....I would have given this 5 stars but I found the story slow in the beginning and some British word usage a bit difficult for an American reader at times....but glad I stuck with it...a wonderful mystery and story of forbidden love

I found the story of Kit and Daisy to be a fascinating one, especially since it explored the lives of two people whose lives were changed forever because of the First World War. It became even more credible when the author said that the story was based on the life of her great aunt. I really enjoyed the author’s descriptions of Cornwall and the fact that she lived in the rectory. While I enjoyed the book on several different levels, I gave it 4 stars because I thought it was oftentimes repetitive especially regarding the relationship of the main character, Chloe, and Neil, her diseased husband. I would recommend this book.

Those who have read Greg Mortenson's previous book, THREE CUPS OF TEA, have no need of any detailed review of STONES INTO SCHOOLS. The latter book has the same marvelous descriptions, narration, and upbeat tone as the former. If you were impressed by the first, you will love the second for all the same reasons. By no means is reading THREE CUPS OF TEA a prerequisite for understanding and enjoying STONES INTO SCHOOLS, and the later book can be read first or without ever touching the earlier one, but why would anyone intentionally deprive himself of the experience of reading both? They are equally excellent as well as instructive.Now, if I do nothing but shower STONES with encomia, this review would be, at best, unbalanced, so allow me to pick a single nit. I don't believe that Greg Mortenson wrote it. Throughout this entire biographical, historical, non-fiction work, Mortenson is rushing hither and yon in Afghanistan and Pakistan, holding jirga (conferences) with village elders, befriending former mujahadeen commanders, soliciting the support of American military officers, corralling construction supplies, and ferrying cash through hostile territory to pay teachers. When he finds himself back in the United States, he's continually on speaking tours to colleges, universities, book clubs, military academies, civic organizations, and public schools. Greg Mortenson has no time to write a book, and I am not at all ready to credit him as the author of this one. My skepticism is more or less confirmed in the Acknowledgements section (pages 381 - 382) when Mortenson thanks "two dedicated writers," Mike Bryan and Kevin Fedarko, for their "marathon efforts ... to bring this book to the finish line...."So there it is: Greg Mortenson's name on the dust jacket and the title page notwithstanding, he is not the author, but you know, that is almost entirely beside the point. The point is that this book, like its predecessor, is about Greg Mortenson's efforts, and those of the entire Central Asia Institute staff, to accomplish something positive, far reaching, and significant in a region of harsh topography and climate, a region that has been wracked by warfare for three decades, that has endured invasions by two major world powers, the USSR and the USA, and that is under continuing attack by reactionary Taliban fighters. The amazing thing is the extent to which these efforts have succeeded and are still succeeding.STONES INTO SCHOOLS is inspirational. It reads like a fictional adventure book. The action never flags. The suspense is tangible. The reader is determined to see how Mortenson or one of his compatriots can overcome the next challenge, and those challenges keep coming one after another. As we read, we wonder when Hollywood will come out with the movie version--and then we remember that this is not fiction at all, and we are amazed at the real-life drama unfolding in the pages. Moreover, we glimpse the peaceful, beautiful and friendly sides of countries and peoples that are too often portrayed in the media as stark, barren, and hostile. And we see a people with a tradition of illiteracy exhibiting a terrible thirst for education.In short, both THREE CUPS OF TEA and STONES INTO SCHOOLS are, in retrospect, both sobering and instructional, yet both read like exciting adventure stories. For whom might I recommend these books? That's an easy one, for the answer is "everyone" from middle-school students to senior citizens. I honestly feel that you, whoever you may be, will enjoy the trip through these books and will come to the end of your literary journey a wiser person despite the fact that you enjoyed every step along the way!

This book is a follow on to Three Cups of Tea, which is a riveting saga of building elementary schools particularly for Afghani girls. In this book much has been already accomplished and we see some fill in data that was glossed over in the first book along with much new follow on story. Both books taken together are a very uplifting story of what can be accomplished against impossible odds with steady perseverance and a very good attitude towards other cultures. I think these two books are a "must read" for anyone, but especially Americans.

Greg Mortenson is an obsessive. A good kind of obsessive, obviously. Known as "Dr. Greg" throughout large stretches of Pakistan and Afghanistan, Greg Mortenson was first obsessed with a couple of things: climbing mountains, and his little sister's Christa's courage and determination at living with epilepsy. After her death, Mortenson decides to climb K2 as a final tribute to her, but is distracted by a life-saving errand before he can summit the mountain. On his way back, having failed to fulfill his obsessive need to memorialize his sister, he gets lost and almost dies before meeting the villagers of Korphe, Pakistan, and, before he leaves their company, forms his new obsession. His new obsession, which combines facing insurmountable odds with improving the lives of little girls, is still playing out, and it demonstrates many things, starting with the power of one person to change the world for the better. If American citizens cannot control the expenditure of their tax dollars to make war in Afghanistan, we can at least contribute money to the Central Asia Institute to fund a far more efficient project that spreads the extraordinarily liberating results of basic education for children, especially girls. That at least 33% of the children going to school in their new buildings should be girls is written into the contracts CAI signs with the communities it builds schools in. And there's evidence that a tendency to obsession is an inherited trait, as Mortenson's father spent twenty years building a hospital in Africa, one whose every department would soon be headed by an African. Giving up is not a Mortenson trait.Three Cups of Tea told the story of the Central Asia Institute's first years, and touched hearts, minds, school children in possession of pennies, and adults with checkbooks across this country. Mortenson was building primarily in Pakistan in Three Cups of Tea. In Stones Into Schools, he invades Afghanistan (in the middle of a war) with the help of a star member of his Dirty Dozen employees and acquires new Afghani personnel, who, it occurs to me, are just as likely to be obsessives as Mortenson is. Accomplishing what CAI accomplishes is not a job for wimps or dawdlers. Both books are adventure tales of the highest order--the dangers are real, the army of school builders is brave physically, culturally, and politically. To obsessives, educating the children, is so much more important than living a comfortable life, or even living past the end of the week. Mortenson tells more of the story himself in Stones, and I prefer the style of the second book to the first. In Three Cups of Tea, David Oliver Relin produced the final text, and its stylistic felicities do not triumph over the sheer length of many of his sentences. Mortenson and his research assistants in Stones are more merciful to the reader who wants to arrive at the predicate of the sentence with some idea of that the subject was.Each of these books is an adventure story, a travelogue with the texture and richness of a good novel, with sympathetic and admirable characters, a history lesson about a part of the world most of us know little about, and a wonderfully inspiriting account of a gently obsessive man's arrival at the top of a much tougher mountain than K2. Read both books and applaud, and send some money if you can.

My adult son passed away suddenly & unexpectedly almost 4 years ago. I have bought many books during that time to try to help me make sense of and understand it all and be able to go on living in the after part of his death which I was sure was absolutely not possible. But here I still am. I don’t like that it happened and I will never get over or completely understand my son’s death, but I am more at peace about it now. I believe the 6 “George books” as I have come to call them, showed up in my life at just the right time as they have been the most helpful for me.

My wife and I both read "we don't die". I can truly say that this book has drastically altered some of my perceptions. I am very grateful for those alterations. George Anderson and his willingness to be tested and tried only adds to the credibility of his talent. He truly does appear to be the "real deal". What he shares he has received from the "other side", ties in and is confirmed by some other recent readings that I have come across. As a former evangelical Christian, what he and others are saying is as much the "good news" as what the Bible attests to, maybe better. Sadly religion does not endorse and in fact often times condemns what George is doing to help others with their grief issues concerning death. I can only hope that changes as more people become open to the possibility that life after death does not have to be as mysterious and taboo as it has been for centuries.

We Don't Die is a fascinating book, both spiritually uplifting and mind blowing from a metaphysical point of view. I read the book because my wife died and a friend of mine met with George Anderson and wholeheartedly believed George was a true medium with very specific knowledge from the beyond. I would have liked the authors to provide documentation for the reader to corroborate their evidence of veracity: weblinks to video footage or audio clips from George's tv and radio readings, written verification from the "scientists" who tested George's ability, evidence that Joel Martin exposed the "Amityville Horror" as a hoax, etc. The claims seem too good to be true, especially given the author's desire and George's stated desire to scientifically explore his ability. If the reader trusts that there really were scientific tests and critics attempting to trick George to no avail, then great. I wanted to test their evidence and could not. Without second hand knowledge from a close friend, I would have put the book down half way through, doubting it was real.As it stands, I do believe what the book claims, and it delivered what I wanted after my wife died. Is there a life beyond this life? Do these worlds connect? Can we be in touch with those who have "passed on" to the other side? Is there evidence to support the Catholic/Christian beliefs about the afterlife? The book delivers the "Yes" answers I was looking for. Am I fooling myself or being fooled by someone who now makes his living on being a medium? Well, that's the rub. It's hard to prove that we don't die. This book (along with others like Heaven is For Real, Proof of Heaven, To Heaven and Back) leads me to believe that either there is a vast conspiracy among those with near death experiences and "psychic" abilities to stick to a common story OR there is really a large number of people who know that we don't die. I enjoyed the book, but I wanted the authors to make an air-tight case. A skeptical reader (nothing wrong with that) will be intrigued, but I don't know about convinced.

Amazing eye opening and hopeful-just what is needed to balance the negativity all around us. Pleasant reading and mandatory once one is ready to look beyond formal religious teaching toward more universal principles. We r spirits first who are then born into physicality then to return to out original state. This system eases so much anxiety surrounding death.

The story of George Anderson is amazing. I had a copy of this book back in the mid 90's. I sent my mother a copy. We've both had experiences with supernatural phenomenon, off and on, throughout our lives. From what we read, if George is doing the things just like the book describes he is in the same league as Edgar Casey, if not better. I'd love to meet and talk to George. I discovered we are near the same age, have similar beliefs, etc. If everything described in the book actually happened as described, I'd urge every one to read it with an open mind. It's very reassuring about questions about life and death. A must read!... G.E.B.

I found myself skimming through paragraphs of this book. I also found the author to be a bit redundant. George Anderson's other books are excellent. I may have liked We Don't Die more if this had been the first George Anderson book I read. However, I read some of his more recent books first. I highly recommend Walking in the Garden of Souls and Lessons from the Light.

LOVE THIS BOOK......I read this years ago and wanted to revisit it. I love the stories and hearing about how families coped better with loss of loved ones with the help of George Anderson.

I have been a fan of George Anderson's for at least 25 years when I being a sanitation worker found one of his books in a pile to be thrown away. The book was Life After Life and myself being one who believes in life after death I was going to read it. Well it was great and after I read it I loaned it to a co-worker who went out on injury and never saw it again. Then going through my kindle I saw another George Anderson book and had to read it. This is a book you are going to enjoy if you believe and believe in Psychics. If you do not believe then don't read because you will always try to find a way to prove his readings are not right. I have a friend who is a very good Psychic and he has predicted a good amount of things in my life to at least being 90% right. So knowing George Anderson was the best it made it an easy read and I must say fascinating. A good read.
