Review

“. . . an astounding achievement, both as a literary and photographic work.” - Fangoria“Koudounaris gracefully transcends mere ghastliness and ghoulishness to challenge cultural perceptions of death, both current and centuries old. The result is not only a highly original work of great visual beauty and rigorous scholarship but also a surprisingly intimate and tender meditation on what the author calls 'the dialogue with the dead.'” - Bloomsbury Review“The photos of the skulls alone justify the purchase.” - Talk

I am so happy that I ordered this book. It is full of stunning photography and the binding is very elegant. This was a perfect addition to my collection of books about Ossuaries. Typically these kinds of books are either coffee-table books burdened by mediocre writing and poor scholarship, or textbooks with wonderful historical perspective but few images. The text by Koudounaris entirely worth reading, though the format sacrifices ease of reading for visual appeal. Some of the sites in this book are rarely photographed or written about, so it is really a wonderful resource in addition to a beautiful book for display. It also includes map locations and very clear cross referencing in the appendices. To be honest, the photographs are so beautiful that it would be worth buying for those alone.

A lovely photography book that picks up and goes a bit deeper than Paul Koudounaris' excellent previous book, "Heavenly Bodies" - the images are hypnotic and so full of radiant 'life' and beauty, artistry and veneration, that while being drawn in to the superb imagery one can never forget exactly what we are seeing - the glorification of the inevitable. The book itself is a work of art - heavy, golden decorative pattens adorn the thick covers, while the pages are exquisite glossy heavy bond. At 224 pages, this is a work of love and craftsmanship. And, without many of these images, where would all those Death Metal bands get their album covers?

I wanted a book that would give historical and interesting facts on places of death and our treatment of the dead. That is just what was delivered and more. The photos are large, high quality and provoked a range of emotions from me including shock, dread, awe, curiosity, and the desire to learn more. I agree with another reviewer that, despite its "coffee table" appearance, the information in this book is very well researched. Also, the the material is in-depth without being academic or dense and seems to build on itself to form a chronology of the history/facts covered. Two, perhaps, unexpected consequences of my reading this:1. My acceptance of death as a normal part of being human has already increased as a result of what I have read and I am definitely more open to its discussion.2. I recognize a need for society to demystify death and break down the taboos so as to better prepare ourselves, thus living more deliberately.

Awesome! Anthropoligst, phsychologists and thansthologists galore.! Also very interesting for people intrigued about or researching the reality of death. Very few books on this topic available. Not so good as Memento Mori, but also extraordinary images and text. Try a recently released book from another author, called "Death, a graveside companion".(1st edition). It's TRULLY awesome!!

A really beautiful and substantial book in the hand. This book is less picture heavy and much more literature heavy than most books about the catacombs. If you are looking for an enormous photobook that is MOSTLY photos this is not your best bet. If you want lots of information interspersed with gorgeous photos and drawings its a win.!

This is a remarkable book. It is beautifully produced and manages to span the realms of the coffee table grimoire and the insightful scholarly work. Paul Koudounaris speaks authoritatively and succinctly, revealing a world of life and hope that has been effectively extinguished in modern society. There is an unsettling message that resonates through every page; by marginalizing and concealing our beloved dead, we take some of the vivacity from our own lives. Plus, you get a built-in ribbon bookmark. The Empire of Death will likely change the way you think about death, even if you had a relatively amicable relationship before.

The photos are really what this book is all about - stunning, chilling, perplexing and intriguing glimpses into the burial or preservation practices of centuries past.If you actually "read" the book, there are some issues: very small typeface, a bit frozen and boring in terms of content, and not a robust accompaniment for the incredible photos.I looked through and enjoyed this and then gave it away as a sumptuous gift to a friend.

Littered around Europe are so called Ossuaries where bones arekept either in special niches or arranged in convivial macabrebaroque art. This book is a compendium of such shrines and ahomage to death itself.Paul Koudounaris has documented well and little known CharnelHouses, not to mention he presented it with flair and supplementedwith several pictures.Included in this handsome hardbound book are the famous CapuchinChurch in Palermo,Scwarzenberg Chapel, Waldsassen and Church ofSaint Francis in Portugal. This is highly recommended for those who are Connosieurs of theStrange and those who are not brave enough to cross the thresholdof the said chapels and churches. Dr. Koudounaris has done anexcellent job and give us a free tour of the Realm of the Dead.

I had read a few of Mr. Bella's books from his New Haven series, and became a fan of the author, before I read this one and I was expecting different characters but maybe the same general outline. Wow...I was completely wrong. This plot, world, characters and just the general feel of this series is different and I couldn't help but enjoy the contrast.I can't wait to see how the characters and story develop through the series. While I liked both MC's I really really prefer Rapheal to Brian. Brian seemed to be weak to me, not physically but personality wise. This is purely a personal opinion because Brian as he is written fits the story but I'm hoping he gets a man up card eventually.I enjoyed getting to know all the characters and reading about the world they live in. It is a modern story set in current times but they have demons running amok in their world and Brian is a cop turned demon (by Rapheal) and he is struggling to come to grips with being not human anymore and what he must do to survive. I'm not going to go more into the plot because I always reveal spoilers on accident but there is a rape scene in this book. Other reviewers have mentioned it so I feel safe saying this: Yes, it is a rape scene. Yes, he ends up enjoying it. No, this is not realistic...because it's pretend, make believe, fantasy, FICTION. Most sane people know that is not not a realistic outcome of rape!! Mr. Bella warns potential readers that his stories are dark, twisted and sadistic but he makes no apologies. Nor should he!

Definitely above free erotica quality. The sex scene was good, and there was even another good scene afterwards (I don't want to go into too much detail and spoil anything). It starts off making you think this is actually some going writing. Then come the backstory and explanations. Not well handled at all. In fact, the story would be far stronger if the main character were left to deal with the difficulties of his situation with no help whatsoever. There's a lot of potential for drama in this idea, but the ball was dropped. I think the author would do well to take a little break from churning out new stuff to study his craft a bit. I am also confused that Amazon lists this "book" as having an editor. Maybe she didn't read it? Doesn't read books published by reputable companies? Isn't a professional editor? I know authors can have a bit of a blind spot when it comes to their own work. I'm just baffled that two people looked at this and this is still what came out. Also, it is a big, big disappointment that the characters are "forced" into being gay by their circumstances. Those of us who actually are gay and who enjoy our sexual orientation like to read about people who enjoy it as much as we do. I can't identify with these characters, and frankly, it's off-putting to read about a guy who finds gay sex distasteful having gay sex. The conflict/rape scene could still have been created if the main character were homosexual, or at least bi.To be clear, this is not the grammatically messy amateur stuff you get for free on the internet. It's worth minimal pay, though certainly not the price that later installments are sold at. However, stars were lost for the insufferable explanations that killed the pace of the story. And for me, the "recruitment" scene at the end guaranteed I won't be reading the next installment. Cliche, boring, way overdone and uninteresting. That said, I may take a stab at a different story by the author and see what happens.

A nonstop, action packed hotnessfest! The characters are definitely not the one dimensional drivel you often get with a hotly erotic read like this. If you are looking for something that is not run of the mill but a well written adventure of hot guys with a very strong paranormal aspect then you should without a doubt read this book. The world Mr. Bella has created and the creatures that inhabit it are different from anything else I've read and that is saying something. I've already gotten the rest of the series and and looking forward to finishing it, except for the fact that I will have to wait for the next one. Warning: while this book is awesome, if you don't like male with male erotica, please don't read this as that is what it is. The sex scenes are very well written and highly erotic but may not be suitable for all readers. Now, if you are not scared off by that, read this book!

I have to say that the rape in the beginning of this book was a bit off for me. While the other Nicholas Bella books that I've read generally have had a strong dub-con/non-con aspect, I never felt that the characters involved were truly forced against their will. After that though, I loved this story and the premise behind it. I can't wait to read the future episodes.

I am a MAJOR fan of Nicholas' New Haven series and when I saw this series being introduced I was hesitant. Demons are not exactly my cup of tea. It took me a while to read this first book but I decided to try it mainly because I love Nicholas' work so much. Once again he has taken me out of my comfort zone and taken me on a an amazing fantastical ride through another world. I am hooked! Nicholas writes his characters so well that they become someone you feel like you have known your whole life within a few pages. I love Brian & am enjoying experiencing his journey along with him. Don't hesitate to start these books. You will be glad you did. :)

This is the first Nicholas Bella book I’ve read and I have to say it’s quite interesting. It’s set in episodes so Chosen is episode one. Quite clever what Nicholas has done here. We have demons and humans and a war to win earth so to speak. Agoto demons are one of the most powerful of demons and when an average Joe is “chosen” to be one, suddenly everyone wants his time, skill, and body.I will absolutely check out episode 2 to see what happens next but I do have a feeling you seriously need to read each one of these to get the whole picture.

I give this book my recommendation for those contemplating, actively planning or already living in Cambodia. I've been living here for about seven months now and know already a lot of what is contained in this book. Still, i would recommend this to other ex pats living here. But most strongly to those new here or planning to move here in the future. It will make your transition here so much easier. There are plenty of tidbits and resources that i didn't know about and find useful. If you are new to Cambodia or planning on moving here, this book will save you a lot of time learning from experience and probably help you feel more secure living here knowing how to be safe. ( Yes, yes, yes... do wear a helmet if you decide to ride on or drive your own motorbike )The author also gives enough of an overview to the history and culture of Cambodia without making the reader lose interest and gives excellent suggestions for further reading. I appreciate her discussion of tourist orphanage volunteers. Although the expat audience is not the primary target of this problem, it is never the less best to get this information out wherever one can.I'm not sure i would be that confident of the ice in Cambodia as the author suggests. I recently got very sick from something i consumed in the provinces and i suspect it was bad ice. The shaped ice is higher quality. If it's crushed ice, it may be from the cheaper ice that has lower standards. I drink a lot of kafie tik da koo, tik ka ( ice coffee with sweet milk ) But for anyone living here, you'll most likely start taking more risks. Anyway, keep the pepto bismol and immodium handy and enjoy your drinks. The table of contents are in the back of the book. Maybe this will be corrected in updates.

I am an avid reader of the blog, but I am glad I went for it and bought this book which I use for reference quite frequently. The suggestions for actual businesses which can help confused expats navigate Cambodian life smoothly are really helpful, and the actual interviews of expats throughout the chapters are quite interesting as well. I particularly found the chapter on hospitals and medical care to be helpful, especially since it outlined which problems and ailments can be treated in the kingdom, and which are better to treat abroad in nearby Thailand or Singapore. This book wont solve all of the problems you might encounter, but it does offer a straight-forward explanation of what to expect as you make your move to this country. I would recommend this to anyone as a supplement to the already wonderful blog by Lina Goldberg!

I will probably never actually move to Cambodia, or anywhere outside the U.S., but I like to think that some day I might. "Move to Cambodia' is so interesting and well written that it's a great read for anyone who enjoys fantasizing about taking off for faraway places. So even though the chances that I'm ever going to need to know how to pay for garbage service in Phnom Penh are probably slim, I really enjoyed this book. Its candid and witty discussions of the cultural differences Westerners are likely to encounter are fascinating, and so are its descriptions of the day-to-day challenges and pleasures of life in Cambodia. In addition to enjoying "Move to Cambodia" as fantasy fodder, I've also been recommending it to my many friends who have 20- and 30-something kids living at home. Why not pack the youngsters off to the Kingdom of Wonder, where they can get a job and afford an apartment, instead of letting them molder in the parental basement indefinitely? Sounds like a win-win to me!

I have lived here for the past five and a half years. I still found some new information. Lina has put a lot of practical information in one easy to use volume. Pay attention to Lina's advice on security. She is right Cambodia is not a high crime country compared to places like South Africa or parts of Brazil but you do need to modify your behaviour to the country. The country is not going to adapt to you.Sure you might find the same information on the Internet. But why bother? Lina has done the work and done it well.

Take a look at the table of contents, covers a lot of areas in good detail and is written in an easy to read journalistic style. The comments about volunteering, and about how much of what gets called volunteering doesn't help and often hurts the recipients is explained. This is a universal comment and makes the price of the book worth it. Volunteering would have been one of my goals for going overseas, and I learned I must be very careful in choosing such opportunities.

Move to Cambodia is a contemporary book that follows in the tradition of the Culture Shock book by Peter North that came out in 2006 or 2007. While some of the information is better covered by Peter in his own volume, Lina's "update" truly does provide a significant overhaul on a lot of sections, and also cuts down on Peter's approach which is slightly more bantering. That said, both texts compliment each other. If you're looking for resources and tips in one handy volume, it's not that expensive to pick up Lina's book and read through it in an hour or two. The value is in being able to refer to it when specific questions arise. All in all, I'm glad I bought it, and will be taking it with me when I move to Cambodia in a month.

Move to Cambodia: A guide to living and working in the Kingdom of Wonder is the ultimate read for all those who are planning to move to Cambodia. Not really knowing what awaits me when I planned my own sudden move to Phnom Penh this year, I used this book while still in Europe as a source of information and sort of a check list for the move. While there are many aspects of life in a new country that each expat needs to discover on their own, the book offers all basic necessary practicalities you need to consider before you actually move. From overview of basic historical events that is a great start for any newbie to explore and understand Kingdom of Wonder, to living areas, medical support, security issues, visa information; this book and regularly updated related website are really comprehensive guides that made my move here seamless.
