"The wisest men follow their own direction and listen to no prophet guiding them," wrote Euripedes. Storr (Music and the Mind), a psychiatrist, uses this ancient caution as the epigraph to a fascinating yet frustrating investigation into the appeal of guru figures. He analyzes the lives and works of the destructive, unbalanced cult leaders Jim Jones and David Koresh, and he uses their symptoms?isolation, narcissism, paranoid delusion?to take the measure of other, generally more respected, "gurus," including Gurdjieff, Freud, Jung, Rudolf Steiner, Rajneesh, St. Ignatius, even Jesus. While insisting that none of these latter can be described as insane, Storr considers their authoritarian certainty an ominous sign. Stressing that there can be a charisma based on goodness and genuine devotion to truth rather than on the power of personality, Storr warns against teachers who claim to know what he judges no single person can know: "No one knows in the sense that Gurdjieff or Rajneesh or Jung believed that they knew and were supposed to know by their disciples." But Storr's elegantly written account is tarnished by his own unacknowledged authoritarianism. I learned from this book about so called leaders who have managed to gather followers and how they 'rule' them. It was a very interesting read and it had been mentioned as well as quoted in Under the Banner of Heaven so I wanted to also read it. I recommend it.

It's a good book worth reading, but the topic is rather dark and cynical in nature.

Very interesting book.

I was interested in the thought processes of the guru mentality allowing them to do the evil they have done in history ti humanity. This is the first book I've read concerning mental processes, and I believe this author has explained the psychology of the guru in terms that are understandable for a laymen.

Dr. Storr is an amazing writer; his clarity of vision, his lucid style as well as his charity are a great resource to the reader.

The book was supposed to be published by The Folio Society and it was instead an inexpensive printing that was part of a series. Very disappointed and it has made me lose confidence in the accuracy of the descriptions on Amazon.

While I was familiar with the story, having seen the film and listened to audio dramas based on this book, I had not read the actual book until now. BY Wells' classic tale of an evil man who discovered the secret of invisibility, his reign of terror and retribution are still a great story. I read this book using immersion reading while listening to the audiobook. The great Scott Brick masterfully narrated this tale in a beautiful British accent. The book has added scenes of filler, which are normally left out of the adaptations. I would love to see a modern production, faithful to the book. Once it gets going after a bit of slowness in the beginning, it is fast paced and exciting. The Invisible Man is often his own worst enemy, due to his temper, vanity and greed. Glad to check this classic off my list.

I love H.G. Wells! He was so ahead of his time with his science fiction.I decided to read this book because I recently read The Madman's Daughter trilogy, the first of which is a retelling of this book (which I highly recommend by the way!). It was very interesting to see what that author took from the original.This book was both thought provoking and absolutely creepy. It's a pretty short and easy read and totally worth it!The book itself is also beautiful and looks great on my bookshelf

This is NOT the book in the image nor is it Folio Society. While the image is a folio society book it’s not the Invisible Man. The book I received was of a quality (for lack of a better word) I’d expect to find in the youth section of an underfunded public library. I have since bought the Folio Society edition of The Invisible Man from ebay

This story was a bit shallow for a classic piece of literature. It was dark all the way through. The Invisible Man was an evil character with no redeeming characteristics. Unlike the monster in Frankenstein who originally had the human desire for companionship and acceptance, this character had sinister motives and nothing else. The only part of this book that I found interesting was the discussion and explanation of how invisibility was achieved. Other than that, I was happy to finish the book so I could read something else.

I knew the story already, having seen a movie version of it when I was a child. I didn't remember that the invisible man had character flaws which led him to hurt others and to think only of himself. I kept thinking as I read how strange it would be to actually meet an invisible person. Very unique and entertaining story.

The story itself earns a 5-star. BUT...this version on Kindle is practically unreadable, as the formatting is messed up. Paragraphs frequently broken into chunks, frequently a single word to a line regardless of the font or size font used. There are several other $.99 versions of this classlc available on Kindle, all of which seemed to have avoided this formatting pitfall. Buy one of those instead.

The message of this book still rings true today. In a world with ever-changing technology and scientific advances, we must still be careful of the impact of those changes and advances. Their effects can be far-reaching and sometimes can be irreversible.As to the writing in this book, the author creates a vivid picture in the mind of the reader of each character and their actions, building the tension with each page. In the days before technology brought us the "moving pictures" of the movies, this author was taking his readers for a suspenseful, action packed ride with only their imagination to paint the pictures in their minds. It is rich in the details of each person, each room, each scene that is before you. I pictured them all in my mind - making my own "movie of the mind". I have seen several movies that were based on this book in the past, but had never read the original book by H. G. Wells. The reading of this book made the best "movie" of all.

I use these books to warm up community band that I conduct nearly every rehearsal. The exercises prepare each musician comprehensively... and they are structured in such a way that no section is left bored while others focus on specific skills.The chorales in this book are BEAUTIFUL, and I really enjoy that the warm-ups go beyond the standard flat "band keys". All-together an indespensible book.

This book came to my attention when I visited the middle school band director of one of my clarinet students. It was obvious that the students in this band program were a step ahead of the rest. The warm-ups have a lot to do with this.Intonation, breathing and articulation are immediately addressed by using these exercises. I even purchased a trombone copy for my son and a flute copy for my daughter so we could play together at home. 5 stars for sure!

I liked this book for many reasons: it presented a lot of nests and not just from birds especially those nests that are bubbly, pebbly, papery, muddy, etc. There was A LOT of additional text to read with facts on most pages. There was more text in this book than the egg book and the seed book, which means this book is not appropriate for preschool (whereas I do use the egg book with preschoolers). I also felt the increase in text, though being very educational, took away from focusing on the images and comparing the nests. I also find it odd that the orangutan nest is on the title page but is not in the book. Some of the nests were hard to understand and the images do not seem to be comparing scale accurately. I normally would take off one star because the cursive font (the main text for the book) was difficult for the children to read and they needed help... but this book is clearly for ages 8+ who should have already been taught cursive... and the cursive is not the font for the large text portions.

Illustrated with exquisite detail by Sylvia Long, the book is a feast for the eyes as well as a smorgasbord of interesting information.The illustrations add depth and interest. Ask your child what he thinks the animal might be feeling. (This may give you some insight to his own feelings about adoption loss.) Lovely illustrations. My kids are too old for picture books, but I bought this book for myself to put on my coffee table. I love the prose and watercolor paintings. It is something special just for me : )
