Along the way, readers also get to know Henry Knox, Ethan Allen, Ben Tallmadge, George Washington, Thomas Knowlton, Major Robert Rodgers, and a short postscript story about Crispus Attucks. Hale knows a way to make history come alive like few others. He manages to make things funny and entertaining, and thus very memorable. Readers will come away from this with a much better understanding of the Battles in Boston and New York City. I really appreciate the bibliographic material provided which explains where the author took some creative license because details are hard to find. I also appreciate it because I think I am going to have to hunt down some of the ones on Henry Knox. That guy is a hilarious character in this book, and I want to know more about him. Also, I have a fairly good grasp of history, but I did not remember the part about Washington getting his forces to construct a fort that would "magically" appear over night. Hale unwinds that tale quite entertainingly. If you want history in an easy-to-swallow dose, try out this series.Notes on content: Around five historic quotes with minor swear words. No sexual content. Since the history depicted is war time, there are several deaths mentioned. When dead are shown though, they are usually cartoon style, as in, men lying on the ground looking normal except with Xs for eyes. Hale keeps the gore to a minimum, but does depict characters in deep sorrow over deaths. Some black eyes and scratches are shown. A cow is blown to bits at one point (a historical fact), but is just drawn as a cartoon "Kaboom" with black dots around it.

I’ve been a fan of Nathan Hale’s for a while. Nathan Hale the author and illustrator, not the patriot, although you could be pardoned the confusion. I loved his illustrations for the graphic novels "Rapunzel’s Revenge" and "Calamity Jack," and his picture book "Yellowbelly and Plum" was one of my sons’ favorites. Hale’s current series has moved him to the top of my list.In 2012 Nathan Hale and Amulet Books started a series of graphic novels based on American History, under the banner (literally) "Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales." The first book in the series is "One Dead Spy," and it and the following books are interesting, easy to follow, and downright entertaining. I’m buying every one of them."One Dead Spy" is about Nathan Hale (the patriot), executed in 1776, at the very beginning of the American Revolution. The 128-page hardcover comic begins with Manhattan in flames, and a whistling Hangman bringing a noose to a gallows. He shoos a bald eagle away, and prepares Nathan Hale to be hanged. They’re soon joined by a British Officer, and these three will be the narrators for the rest of the book. Given an omniscient overview of American History, Hale sees what the destiny of the country is, and even though things look grim for the colonists (and more especially for Hale personally) in September 1776, he knows that there’s a brighter future. He proceeds to tell the Hangman and British Officer all about the American Revolution, focusing on the first year, and Hale’s role in it.Nathan Hale makes a good narrator for the years 1775-76, and his path crosses with the likes of George Washington, Henry Knox, Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold, General Howe and other notable heroes and villains of American History. The author uses these interactions to tell the key events of the revolution, including the capture of Fort Ticonderoga, the Battle of Bunker Hill (and Breed Hill), the Boston Massacre, and the Declaration of Independence. He leaves a lot of things untold, telling more of his tales in future volumes, but gives us enough information to make this book a solid read.As a parent, a history teacher, a geek, and a promoter of graphic novels, I frigging love this series. I enjoy the humor and the menace in One Dead Spy—even as the Hangman provides comic relief, you can’t forget that the real narrator, Nathan Hale, was executed. Some of the humor is in asides, some is in telling the truths of history that are often left out of the dry history books. The illustrations are cartoony but excellent, with no confusion about who's who in the course of the story. Hale (the author) also doesn’t shy away from telling us when people suffered and died, making this more mature reading than you might expect. I loved it.

There is a masculine feel to these books. But, what's great is that they combine the extremely popular "graphic novel" writing style with real history. My son was semi-enthused upon opening these books on Christmas morning. He's 11, books aren't the most exciting gift! BUT, since then, I've caught him reading them when he's supposed to be asleep, by flashlight! He is not what I'd call a reluctant reader but he is choosing to read these over diary of a wimpy kid right now. My husband actually read one of them on Christmas morning, too! Great series, hope the author continues writing them!

My son has been a huge history and comic book buff since he learned to read last year. He is an avid reader - whatever he can get his hands on. I bought this for him thinking he might be a little young still but I was wrong. He has been reading this, Big Bad Ironclad and Hale's newer WWI book over and over and over again. He sleeps with them, they come in the car so he can read them on the way to school and on the way back home. Clearly, Nathan Hale is an entertaining writer. The only one we decided not to buy him yet is The Donner Party because of the subject matter (we'll wait until he's a little older to get this one). According to my son, Nathan Hale's books get 5 stars.

My 8yo son has read each of the NHHT books multiple times. He keeps one with him wherever he goes. They can have themes that may be shocking for some, but those opened good discussions for our family. Our kid asked questions, and we talked them out.If you have a kid who loves learning and humor and you can handle having discussions about hard stuff occasionally, then I highly recommend these books.We have loaned a couple to friends who are reluctant readers, and they also LOVED these books.

Baby's First Year Milestones is a beautifully organized read. It's laid out by month and gives you a brief overview of what to expect from your baby and how to help them develop with simple activities, songs and materials most of which are already found in your home. The end of chapter summaries, notes sections and checklists in the back help me keep track of my baby's progress.What I loved most about this book and I think differentiates it from others baby books I've read is how the writing style gives me such a sense of calmness and builds my confidence in caring for my baby. The brevity of each section makes this book incredibly approachable and enables follow through even while caring for a new infant and a wild toddler. I can just quickly flip to the month my baby is in and review a few pages for ideas or take a note then set it down again for a few weeks. I really appreciate that the author provides a handful of activities and verbal games for each month rather than bombarding the reader with hundreds of overly explained things they must do to keep baby on track.I have a 2 year old and a 1 month old and I love that I now feel like I can provide a developmentally appropriate environment for my baby by slowing down and enjoying a relaxed and simple play time with him. I wish I'd had this book with my first child so I wouldn't have spent so much money on a ton of obnoxious different toys or wasted all my spare time cobbling together ideas from apps and blogs and attempting unnecessarily complicated Pinterest projects.My baby seems to enjoy the activities and is very mellow and attentive during play sessions. I'm also so much more in tune with the little things my baby is practicing and able to respect his interests and needs better. I appreciate the authors tips about baby cues like how turning away is a sign of overstimulation or disinterest in an object indicating it may be time for resting and the suggestion to give them independent play time while they're engaged with something and just observe them.I received an advanced copy from the publisher after having already preordered a copy. I'm very much looking forward to using the hard copy and sharing it with my friends and family when they visit my new baby.

There are so many books about how to take care of your body during pregnancy, about what is going on inside your belly during pregnancy. This book, Baby's First Year Milestones, is one of it's kind, a super easy-to-read book for mothers with newborns. It is very well-organized by the month, first giving an overview of what to expect, typical behavior challenges, and highlights to look forward to. Within each month, it also gives you the typical developmental milestones.What is special about this book is that there are many original games and activities that you can play with your child. It is further divided into categories- motor skills, sensory development, language and mental development, and social-emotional skills. You can easily flip through the section you want to read or do, without needing to read the book cover-to-cover.Now comes my favorite part of this book: It has prompts for notes and a generous space to jot down your favorite moments and memories for each month. I have bought books that keeps track of these moments for my oldest daughter, but she is now almost 4yo, and I *still* haven't gotten to it! This book is so easy to answer and use, so the moments are easily recorded. Also, at the end of the book, there is a checklist to keep track of the milestones your baby has achieved!A MUST-HAVE FOR FAMILIES WITH NEW BABIES!!! I highly recommend this!

As a grandparent, I especially appreciate the over 100 suggestions for appropriate games, songs and toys for babies. When I visit with my granddaughter I am able to come armed with activities that are exactly right for her developmental age. I love this book! The author's message of patience, love, gentle guidance and encouragement is sprinkled throughout. Be forewarned! Reading this book, young or old, just might make you want to have a baby in your life. I highly recommend this beautiful book.

This book is a MUST HAVE for any new parent. Aubrey guides you through the different developmental stages your newborn to infant goes through. She is thoughtful and intentional in her approach. It is laid out monthly so it’s not overwhelming with information and you can learn about the social, emotional needs in addition to physical milestones. The book also provides you with little songs and games you can play with your baby. They are so fun! There is a footsie and wootsie rhyme my baby boy loves. Also there are even pages to write letters and memories. You and your spouse will read through this each month to understand your child better. I’m so glad I bought this! It has made a difference!

This is an excellent guide. For those familiar with Montessori, it is clear Aubrey's writings are influenced by that (which I love) but she also has a thorough background in child development. Even though this book is Montessori inspired, it's absolutely applicable for people who know nothing about the philosophy (or even those who frankly aren't interested in learning about it). I am going to be gifting this to all my new mom-friends because I think it's an informative, yet laid-back guide to your child's first year. Spoiler alert--you don't know a bunch of loud and glitzy toys to help your baby learn and grow.

Sooo good! I will now gift this to every new or soon-to-be parent. This book is so easy to follow and helps me make sure I’m supporting my baby as best I can in so many different planes of development! Highly recommend!!
