Wilma Rudolph's spirit is triumphantly present in this biography. Younger readers will come to admire the runner as much as the rest of us do. The vocabulary and action in this story are just right for children's early interest. Such an amazing woman -- I am glad to read such an excellent biography of her, written for young people.

The Cosmic Handbook for Third Edition Mutants & Masterminds is another fine supplement for this game system. Since Mutants & Masterminds is fully compatible with the DC Adventures roleplaying game, most of the material presented here supports that game, as well. The first chapter in the Cosmic Handbook, "Infinity and Beyond," opens with a short piece of fiction to set the mood, followed by a detailed overview of all things extraterrestrial in superhero comics-- with a particular focus on the tropes and conventions of science fiction and alien invasion type stories. Since alien cultures or civilizations have been portrayed in markedly different ways throughout the various eras of comic book publishing history, this chapter surveys much of that terrain and offers practical suggestions for Game Masters who want to recreate a particular theme or set a mood specific to one of these eras. While this section might not be of much use to a Game Master who already knows exactly what type of story he or she wants to tell, there is some excellent food for thought to be found here.Chapter two, "Cosmic Heroes," offers plenty of crunch for character creation, but it begins with a discussion of the science fiction genre and the various roles which player characters could fill in those story types. It presents new abilities, skills, advantages, equipment, and powers which are appropriate to a science fiction comic book adventure, as well as suggestions for how existing character options from the core rules can be adapted in such a setting. Finally, the chapter closes with some new player archetypes of varying Power Level. The third chapter is entitled "The Cosmic Series" and covers exactly what that title implies. Addressed primarily to Game Masters, it discusses many of the themes central to outer space or interdimensional comic-book stories-- aliens and alien invasions, space travel, cosmic mysteries, and so forth. It also includes several excellent villain archetypes and examples of alien races. The fourth and fifth chapters are specific to Mutants & Mastermind's default 'Freedom City' setting, and therefore might not be as useful for DC Adventures campaigns set in the DC comic book universe. Chapter four, "The Freedom Cosmos," looks at the timeline and history of the 'Freedom City' setting, going all the way back to the creation of the universe and fast-forwarding to the far, far future. Chapter five,"Freedom City 2525," presents that distant future as an alternate setting for Mutants & Masterminds games, a setting reminiscent of DC Comics' 'Legion of Super-Heroes' setting on 30th-century Earth. This last chapter also presents a somewhat DC-esque far-future superhero group, the "Freedom Legion," whose members sadly seemed so uninspiring that their presentation and page count, combined with my overall lack of enthusiasm for the "Freedom City" setting, led me to dock one star from this review. The Cosmic Handbook doesn't quite do for outer space adventures what the Supernatural Handbook did for horror adventuring, but it's still a useful supplement with a lot of good material for players and Game Masters. I'd recommend picking the Supernatural Handbook up first, but wouldn't discourage anyone from buying this supplement.

Don't know how much of it we'll use in our gaming group, but it's there if needed.

The book has good ideas and builds on the base of M&M very well.

good book.

Great book!

To get this out of the way, my copy is softcover, not hardcover.Comsic is definitely an era useful to cover for M&M. As they note, it covers a lot of area, and good suggestions are provided, with the ever useful Archetypes taking you from PL 10 to 14.I have to admit, I'm happy to see the Lockheed option here.Chapter 4 isn't bad with information on the universe, but Chapter 5 looks like it was written in the 90's and never updated. The Freedom Legion has 8 people, only 2 of which are female. And both of them are attractive, and show a lot of skin. Because...reasons, I guess. Note none of the men are attractive, because that would be gross and no women like cheesecake. Apparently. I give Professor Danger credit for a high INT, but no one will notice as they are all staring at her boob window. It's a pity the author couldn't come up with a better female character that actually inspired the artists.

This is the true story of the musicians who played on the Titanic. We always see them portrayed in Titanic movies, and I always wonder just who they are and what their stories are. I was especially interested to know who the bandleader was. He was Wallace Hartley and was only 33 years old when the Titanic sank. Steve Turner writes about each band member in this readable and informative book. One of them had a father who was a recognized clairvoyant who told his son not to get on the Titanic. I think if I had that kind of a warning, I wouldn't have gotten on it. Good and readable. Thank you, Mr. Turner, for doing this book. It's been needed for a long time.

I've read plenty of books and articles and nearly every aspect of the sinking of the Titanic. One part that remained obscure, however, involves the eight musicians who played on til the end, then went down with the ship. Who were they? This book answers that question and more. It's a somewhat odd book and a tough one to rate. At times, the book is gripping, absolutely fascinating. At other times, dry as dust. The problem: There is almost no information known about these 8 musicians. The author did a large amount of research and uncovered a lot of interesting information but, in order to write an entire book, he needed to add a bunch of filler, too.Apparently, one firm (two brothers) booked musicians on all the turn of the century ships, including the Titanic. These musicians often were hotel orchestra musicians who then went on to play onboard ships. They had to know upwards of 500 songs and be able to play them instantly as people onboard the ships were given a book of songs and could just ask for #23, for instance. Also of interest was the fact that, as the ship was sinking but while lifeboats were being lowered, they played peppy music, ragtime and such. As the ship was about to sink, the musicians played hymns, repeatedly playing Nearer, My God, to Thee as the ship actually sank.Fascinating book and, if you can get past the somehwhat dry filler, recommended.

I thought this was a very informative and well-researched book. Lots of us know about the events of the disaster, but I didn't really know about the men who comprised the musical entertainment on the ship. The story goes into extensive detail about their birthplaces and how they trained to become musicians. Also it covered how it came to be that they performed on the Titanic. The author put a lot of time into this book, did a lot of research, and had many, many sources for his information. I found it interesting to discover so much about the brave men who not only were accomplished musicians, but gave their lives in a most heroic way by continuing to play music while desperate rescue and evacuation measures were taking place. The reader is left to imagine whether they thought that they would survive this disaster, or if they didn't think they would and chose to alleviate panic by providing their beautiful music to the end.Because of all of the historical events, dates, addresses, etc. the book moved a bit slowly but never lost my interest.I highly recommend it.J.Kane

There were parts of this historic event that dragged but in the long run I found it quite interesting. I think if only there was just one survivor who could have given an accurate account of what happened or had taken the time to get to know someone from the band, but there really wasn't time.I would recommend this to anyone interested in all aspects of the Titanic sinking and adding as maybe a puzzle piece.

Fantastic research, sensitive writing, a must read!

Interesting collection of stories well told. A well researched biography of one of the saddest stories in history. It's amazing how well documented their lives were even though they weren't famous until their deaths.

The Band that Played ON: The Extraordinary Story of the 8 Muscians Who Went Down with the Titanic is a factual account of the Titanic tragedy. It includes photographs, letters and eyewitness accounts of each band member. This is a must-have book for those with special interest in the Titanic disaster, history buffs and music fans.

A very compelling story. It did drag a little in spots, but very inspiring nonetheless. Especially intriguing in light of the recent discovery of the violin belonging to the band leader.

The first thing I have to say about Aliens: the Anthropology of Science Fiction, besides that the cover art is very strange, is that the introduction basically consists of nothing more than a series of paragraphs each summarizing one of the chapters or essays within. I also have to say that it is also an academic work, in the sense that it contains philosophical essays, including one that quotes Kant. If you are not familiar with that philosopher, you will not understand what the essay is talking about, and if you have, you will know why I can make such a blanket statement. It is a very theoretical book, and essayists seem to assume that they are addressing only readers who know the same exact things and stories as they themselves know. The second main thing I have to say about Aliens: the Anthropology of Science Fiction, is that either the book is old, even if you have a new copy. At least one essay within directly mentions things written in 1985 as being recent works. That particular article talks about robotics, which makes its dated nature stand out even more than the others. It is hilarious, though, reading what they thought robots would be doing 20 years from then, as I think I have read actual recent articles that make the same exact predictions, once again saying that we should be seeing such things within the next 20 years or so.I'm really not sure who exactly I would recommend this book to, in terms of the intended target audience. Anyone with an interest in classic sci-fi would be interested, if they didn't get a copy when this book was new, but I'm not kidding when I say classic--the book doesn't know that Aliens and Terminator have sequels. Alien enthusiasts might like it, along with those who dabble in popular psychology, I suppose. Certainly not anyone in or at a high school level or younger than the book, between the dense and complicated language and the lack of any references to things written during my lifetime.

I am a sucker for bleak books and chose this one because of the blurb by Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee author, of the Emperor of All Maladies, which I loved. But it turns out that this book is not bleak. Mostly it's instructive, inspirational, and hopeful. Julie Yip-Williams, with beliefs based in Buddhism, shows the world through her words how to approach death with" the dignity and grace of an evolved soul." As someone who has tried and failed at Christianity (for which I have no regrets), I find her philosophy thought-provoking. If there's a silver lining in this beyond this pretty brilliant book, it's that she had access to excellent care and was blessed with seemingly exceedingly intelligent and amazingly talented children and an excellent support system. The authors' recounting of her life (which almost ended in infanticide), including up-by-her bootstraps educational efforts achieved in spite of blindness, her battle with stage IV cancer (including intimate details about her treatment and the disease's progression), and thoughts about her impending death are intertwined masterfully. Like Paul Kalanithi's book When Breath Becomes Air, she shows readers what choosing to live a life less ordinary in the face of tragedy looks like. What I love most is that she acknowledges her own flaws in thinking and acting (and that of others) in the face of this unfairness and "how impotent we truly are in the face of unseen forces that would cause the earth to tremble or cells to mutate and send a body into full rebellion against itself," yet sees through to the beauty in life. In the end, she exhorts us to, "Live while you're living."

Absolutely love this book. I could not put this book down and I wished I had read this years before when my sister-in-law was dying of cancer, or when my friend was dying of cancer also. I know it was a way for the author, Julie, to write down her thoughts and feelings during the last few days of her life. It was a testimony to her family, her love of life and it was honest, emotionally piercing to the soul and tender. There was anger in the book, which she did not deny herself of, grief and joy.I cannot tell more about it because if I do, I will spoil it for the next reader and I cannot do that. This book is not one of those happy books where the reader dies gracefully and peacefully. No. She raged against the fates but at the same time, she was so appreciative of the world we live in. She did cry and she will make you cry, but she will also make you admire her at the end for being so divinely human. Her bravery was not in how she died, but in how she embraced her life and how she shared it with the rest of us. She opened her heart to the world and for this reader, she has left an unforgettable imprint on my life.

I ordered and read this book because I've had Stage 3 cancer and I needed to know what this author had to say about her Stage 4 journey, in case I end up there. I am glad the author was so honest about her feelings, including her resentments when comparing her fate to those of others. We read obituaries that make cancer victims sound like saints and pillars of courage as they battled to stay alive, but I knew I wasn't the only one who had doubts, feelings of weakness, and other negative thoughts. I totally related to the author's desire to shout "I have cancer!! I'm dying!!" as she smiled and exchanged pleasantries with others, and I related to the sensation of being suddenly cut off and removed from other people and the world itself. The author died young and left two small children behind. This makes her story sadder. I'm glad she went into great detail about the treatments she pursued for her cancer, including the array of drugs. I declined all drugs except those used for surgery, but I am interested in others' decisions and how they feel about those choices later on. Stage 4, which is metastatic cancer, is a different ball game, and I could relate to the author's sense that many don't understand what Stage 4 means for survival chances. I've felt many people may be misled by the cheerleading for people who have had Stage 1 breast cancer, for example, while those with metastatic cancer and poor survival chances are kind of disregarded, even in "support" groups. The author seemed to feel that even some with metastatic cancer are not facing the reality of their situation and that they hold out unrealistic hope for beating the cancer even as they are at death's door. I'm not sure what to say to that. I know people who have survived Stage 4 for many years. What we tell ourselves is important. In the end, though, we are just left to wonder why outcomes differ. Books like this one help us gather some clues, perhaps. The book is a bit repetitive about the author's early experiences with being born blind and having family members almost kill her because of it. I feel these passages are repetitive because the book is really a journal, and these were things the author revisited a number of times to gain resolution as she faced her mortality.I was heartened to read her husband's contribution to the book. I'm glad to have read what they shared. Thank you.

This book had been compared to “When Breath Becomes Air” which I read and loved. I did not love this book, nor did I like it. Although it is sad that Julie died at a young age leaving two young daughters, I did not connect with her at all. Her descriptions of how best to live your life were irritating. Having had friends who died of stage IV cancer, I was annoyed at her negative description of people who choose to remain hopeful in the face of a horrible disease. When some people have to schedule their chemo on a Friday so they can return to work on Monday, Julie never returned to her job after her diagnosis. She discussed the great effort it took her, after purchasing the apartment next door, to work with contractors to double the size of their living space. Money to buy the best was not an object. I never got the impression that she realized how fortunate she was to have family to help her and the freedom to choose treatment without worrying about paying for it.

The Power of Onlyness: Make Your Wild Ideas Mighty Enough to Dent the World, by Nilofer Merchant

Review

“The Power of Onlyness is a book for our times. . . . we wonder if we, as one person amidst [the] din, can make a difference. We wonder if one step will truly add up, over time, to a thousand or a million steps toward progress. The Power of Onlyness says yes, emphatically, and we couldn’t need that kind of encouragement more. . . . Just as Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence, or E.Q., eventually became a widely used phrase describing what was previously thought of as a ‘soft’ personal quality . . . onlyness has the potential to change the way we think about people and the ideas they generate. . . . Merchant is asking us to look less at types of people, as Goleman did, or groups of people, as [Susan] Cain did, and instead appreciate the individual as having a unique perspective that no one else can claim. From that position, your ideas are unique to you . . . . Merchant isn’t calling for a cacophony of voices, disparate and competing. Her book is not about individualism as much as it is about community. . . . Merchant forces us to dig deep, into the book and ourselves, and it goes beyond self-knowledge and self-empowerment, obliterating the fear of otherness with an understanding of the onlyness of us all. The Power of Onlyness calls us to identify what is good in ourselves and to connect with what is good in others so that, together, we can indeed dent the world.” —Sally Haldorson, 800-CEO-READ (staff pick)“No longer do we need to worry about how our ideas will be judged. By showing us how to mobilize communities around our ideas, Nilofer Merchant shows us why and how we can elevate the power of our ideas to limitless heights unfettered by conformity.” —Amy Cuddy, author of Presence“With The Power of Onlyness, Nilofer Merchant passes all three tests of a masterpiece: 1) memorable stories; 2) actionable insights; and 3) urgent relevance to now!” —Tom Peters, author of In Search of Excellence  “Merchant discovers her onlyness when she walks out on an arranged marriage. At first, she doesn’t know what to call it but a lifetime of encouraging men and women to summon the best of themselves teaches her how to nurture it—in herself and others. Now we need her empowering work more than ever. Onlyness doesn’t mean you work alone; but you train yourself, sometimes against the odds, to recognize your own value and increase your chance of finding allies!” —Sherry Turkle, author of Reclaiming Conversation and Alone Together   “With captivating stories and keen insights, Nilofer Merchant urges us to cast aside conformity and embrace our own unique identity and purpose. The Power of Onlyness is a bold, inspiring book that will leave you feeling infused with power and ready to take on the world.” —Dan Pink, author of Drive and To Sell is Human   “Nilofer Merchant’s spectacular gift is to make tangible what we already feel to be instinctual: the power of the individual alongside the power of a community in the service of one idea can change the world. But Nilofer also explains what may not feel so instinctual: that all of us have the capacity to create change, no matter our social, racial, gender or economic status. This book is one of the most hopeful pieces of writing I’ve read in a long time. Nilofer defines and explains the value of individuality and collaboration in equal measure. It’s a true celebration not just of humanity but of all the possibilities we can accomplish together.”—Stacy London, style expert, TV personality, and author of The Truth about Style“For any would-be activists who hear the voice: ‘not me’ or ‘not now,’ Merchant makes the strong case for ‘yes you’ and ‘yes now’—and even shows you how to jump in.” —Van Jones, host of CNN’s The Messy Truth, author of Rebuild the Dream and The Green Collar Economy“This is an illuminating book about the context in which great, world-changing ideas emerge and take root, with stories and insights galore.”—Eli Pariser, co-founder and co-CEO, Upworthy“The Power of Onlyness is the wake-up call that the world needs so badly right now. It's a reminder that, quite simply, we all matter. That each perspective has inherent value. That each person's unique vantage point is literally a position of power. That each voice matters, and should be used. Be warned: after reading this book, you won't be able to ignore that voice again. You will be compelled to speak up and to use it, in bigger, bolder, louder ways than ever before.”—Jessica Jackley, founder of Kiva“An exhortation to raise one’s freak flag, dust off that notebook full of plans and dreams, and set up shop. . . . The best of Merchant’s case studies illustrate the operating principles of cultural difference and the power of persistence in getting things done.”—Kirkus Reviews “Merchant encourages her readers to embrace their uniqueness in this self-help guide for would-be innovators. She begins by asserting the importance of identifying one’s purpose, or what she calls ‘the dent,’ and then tells her readers how to find theirs. . . . Next, Merchant encourages her readers to find ‘co-denters,’ those people who can help you amplify your message. Finally, she urges readers to galvanize others to act . . . Merchant asserts that trust is rewarded . . . and delivers an inspiring message about the power of believing in one’s dreams.”—Publishers Weekly

THE best book I've read in years. I couldn't put it down and have pages and pages of notes. This new book from Nilofer Merchant is a deep dive into the power of YOU to make a DENT in this world. Discussion archaic leadership models, power, creativity and making a difference in the word, this is something that IS indeed accessible to everyone - not just those bestowed a leadership title. We all matter, and inside of our collaboration and individuality, there is a greatness to be had, discovered and introduced to the world. We CAN all make our wild ideas mighty enough to dent the world. Some take away quotes:Onlyness: your signature concoction of what matters to you, gives you clarity of purpose and enables you to focus on what matters. That is your path forward.***Existing power and status frameworks act as self-reinforcing loops, keeping the status quo, the status quo. Stand in the spot that only YOU can stand in. Then meaningfully connect with others so that you (and your ideas) finally have a new pathway.***The protagonist does not wait for permission to lead, innovate or strategize, but does what is needed and right for the group as a whole, without regard to his / her own status. The “power of us” is not the sheer number of members in any group, but the bonds between them, such as curiosity, vulnerability, the ability to handle conflict.***We must signal our passions and seek our allies. We must give ourselves permission to have an original idea, even when no one else is advocating for it.We’re going to have to honor the onlyness of ALL people we meet along the way - especially when we disagree with them.We must reframe the questions people pose, and change the conversation to find new ways through. We must learn how to lean on one another to build trust and scale our ideas. We must learn how to galvanize those who might not experience what we know to be true by showing them value. We must engage people to work with us, not by telling them the answers but by pointing toward a new horizon.

Whether you have been nurturing an idea with you or feel stuck in the routine of your life, this book will light a fire under you to activate you to activate your personal power. I devoured this book in one day, bought copies for family and friends, and am reading it again to savor the nuggets. Nilofer Merchant has a clear, intelligent, wise, witty, and compassionate voice. She writes with wisdom and humility and also shares the personal journeys of other innovative entrepreneurs and activists whose ideas blossomed from the uniqueness of their own experiences then spread like wild fire through the vectors of often unsuspecting collaborators. The Power of Onlyness is inspiring and motivating, a must-read for anyone with "that great idea" that's never seen the light of day.

I LOVED reading this book! The Power of Onlyness is the book I wish I had years ago. In my younger adult years, I always dreamed about making a meaningful difference in the world, but I always subconsciously counted myself out of the game because doing things like traveling to and living in third world countires was never a feasible option for me. Had I heard about Nilofer's concept of "onlyness" back then, I probably would have focused less on what everyone else was doing and placed greater trust in my own ability to serve. What Nilofer does in The Power of Onlyness is make an extremely convincing case that ANY one of us can contribute to our communities when we take full ownership of our unique positioining in the world and take action based on those insights and/or ideas that only we have.I was quite skeptical to pick up this book because there are so many books out there in this category that lack substance. I am really, really glad I gave The Power of Onlyness a chance. The book is a very thoughtful read and if you are the social change type, I highly recommend picking it up. It might change your life.
