From the Back Cover

Designed for students and professionals, the Fourth Edition of Program Evaluation: Alternative Approaches and Practical Guidelines provides instruction for conducting evaluations, from identifying the questions that the evaluation should address, to determining how to collect and analyze evaluative information, to ascertaining how to provide evaluative information to others. Making extensive use of checklists, examples, and other study aides, Program Evaluation teaches students how to effectively determine the central purpose of their evaluation, thus making their evaluation more valid, more useful, and more efficient.   The revised edition of the text includes new approaches to program evaluation, an expanded discussion of logic models, added information on mixed models, and, as always, updated coverage of the most current trends and controversial issues in evaluation.   New to this Edition:   New approaches to evaluation including theory-based evaluation, logic models, organizational learning, and building evaluation capacity allow students to explore even more ways to find solutions and best practices.  An expanded discussion of how to use logic models and other methods to identify the purposes of an evaluation further aides students in understanding and conducting effective evaluations. More examples, references to examples, and additional suggested readings give students more opportunities to explore and practice what they are learning. Updated content throughout the text includes new findings and current events related to the field, keeping readers up-to-date on the latest developments in program evaluation. This book was required reading material for a graduate-level program evaluation course. Throughout my many years of being a student, I have had the sincere displeasure of reading some of the most boring textbooks in existence. This one, however, takes the cake. It does so in finding the perfect balance between small font, thin pages, minimal white space and maximum words per page layout. The absence of an eBook option is further insult to injury. The authors do little to reinforcement of key concepts in a succinct fashion. Truly I believe there was an incentive to pack in as many words as possible. Entire chapters could be replaced with 2-3 pages of content. The book has a tone/pace which leads me to believe the authors had intentionally deployed in an effort to subliminally coerce students to hear Ben Stein as they slowly navigate from page to page to never-ending page.If you're reading this, it's likely because some misguided faculty at your own higher learning institution has made the terrible, unfortunate decision to use this book as a part of their curriculum. If that is the case I offer you one small bit of advice: Rent this book thus denying the authors and publisher an added sale. Because truly, unless you are on the market for the worst textbook on the planet, no one deserves earnings from the sale of this text. BONUS: If you rent, you might get an already marked up copy from the poor souls who rented before you. Just ignore the tiny scribbles pleading for help and for the book to end.

The information is presented in an organized manner, though the subject matter is dry. I found it helpful to skip to the ends of chapters and read the important bullets and use the prompting questions there to go back and skim the chapter for the pertinent information. The book aside, I genuinely did not enjoy the Kindle presentation of this. Maybe because I rented it, but it could be the same for buying it, I could not view it on more than one device. Being that it is a textbook this was rather terrible to find out halfway through the semester when I was separated from my normal laptop. I normally love the Kindle setup, but this book isn't readable on the Kindle itself or the online reader, an app must be used which would be alright if it had the same functionality. That being said, the app does allow for note taking and highlighting which are nice.

I can't believe this book has gotten so many low ratings. It is clear, provides good examples, and has excellent diagrams that explain the few paragraphs before it.I have been teaching ten years and am currently in graduate school for higher education administration. I enjoy the book. If you are not a teacher, however, I can see why it might be difficult to see the reason for it if you have nothing to relate it to from your work life experiences.Only suggestions: peruse the chapters first for the diagrams rather than highlighting and breaking it down yourself first--will save you lots of time. Also, the concepts are usually clear enough that you can skip many of the example paragraphs they throw in each section.

This text was pretty exhaustive but they should have included several examples of evaluations, executive reports, etc. It would have been interesting to study the types of evaluations and read some mock or real evaluation reports or mock journal entries listing information gathering processes, focus group meetings, etc. in each style. They used a few limited journal entry examples but something that really lays out the whole process would have been better. The book is quite technical, perhaps at the expense of overlooking the energy and passion that evaluators need for themselves and to bring out in their stakeholders. Our professor actually had to use an additional book (Action Research by Stringer) to add that component. At the price we paid this text should have also covered more of that perspective. This book is ridiculously expensive. Surely they could lower the prices a bit and still make a great profit. I think that students being hit with huge tuition costs are getting tired of these outrageous book prices. The authors really know their stuff and I learned a lot from the book.I don't begrudge them for making a profit for such a scholarly work but I'd love to know how they (the publishers)can justify such a cost for a book. All in all a good text especially covering the component parts of evaluations, types of evaluations, evolution of the science, and the ethical issues that evaluators face.

A very comprehensive approach to program evaluation. The reading level may not be suitable for some readers as it takes an experienced reader to navigate through the terminology. That being said, this edition does a great job of organizing the chapters (historical, content, and application analyses). A great tool for graduate students who are studying program evaluation or for those with interest in the field. Overall, I rate this volume received a B-.

A new story with an old soul. That's how this book has been described by others who have fallen in love with it and I could not agree more. I was surprised to find something that reminded me, powerfully, of Edith Nesbit, CS Lewis and George MacDonald - while being something completely different at the same time.A hero story, this is more Hobbit than Watership Down. More Narnia than Beatrix Potter. And it works. I was skeptical because I usually prefer my animal characters to be of the James Herriot kind - rather than the talking Beaver kind. But, this, like Lewis, somehow lets us forget that Heather and Picket are animals and instead we relate to the heroes in these interesting characters.I had a hard time getting into the story. Because I had no idea what the intention was, I struggled in the first few chapters. They were almost too pastoral for me. Looking backwards, I understand now that they are in fact much like the beginning of The Hobbit - the innocence of the Shire (I mean Nick Hollow) must be acknowledged before the adventure can begin.Once Picket and Heather and are on the run, the story comes alive.I have waited weeks to write this review because I want so badly to communicate the profound value of this humble and tender little story. Even two months later, words fail me.Heather and Picket are unwitting participants in an adventure that transforms them into the very best versions of themselves - in the old fashioned way. They suffer much. They struggle against themselves. They humble themselves. They confront their own worst attributes. And they do it with the help of incredible mentors and new friends who have their own complex histories. There is so much to love about this book. It feeds the imagination, nourishes the soul and fortifies the character of the reader.S.D. Smith is the creative force behind Story Warren - a website dedicated to being the horns of Rohan in our lives as we seek stories of truth, goodness and beauty that point our children to the Maker. There is a sincerity in S.D. Smith's writing that makes the reader feel like they too could be the heroes of their own stories. Like the greats that Smith loves (Tolkien, Lewis, etc.), he tells stories worth knowing. Stories which inform the moral imagination and continue to speak to the reader long after the book has been returned to the shelf. It is exactly as S.D. Smith says at Story Warren - they are on our side. They are allies in imagination.I have been asked about the intensity level of this book. I would put it at the same level as The Last Battle. My four year old had no problem with this book but he is not particularly sensitive. I think that it is fair to say that the intensity progresses as follows:NarniaThe Green Ember/The Black Star of KingstonThe Hobbit/The Wingfeather SagaThe Lord of the Rings

Okay, I'm a 42 year old father of 4. I have 3 daughters (16, 7, and 5) and one son (13). I saw this while browsing on Amazon and thought, "The cover looks cool. Hmm.. the reviews are good. I wonder if the kids would like to read this?" Well, I decided to take it for a test spin, so to speak, and, as it turns out, I loved it!I'm probably going to need to edit this review later after I read this out loud with my younger daughters and give their reaction but I thought S. D. Smith did a great job. There's an epic feeling here and the characters are just great. The illustrations are sure to pull your kids in--they're great.Anyway, I can't wait to read this with my kids and to continue the adventure with Picket, Heather, and the rest of the outstanding cast of characters.Check it out!

Rabbits? That has to be something cute like Beatrix Potter’s stories, right? That’s what I thought when I heard about this book by S.D. Smith. I picked it up anyway since it looked all right and might be something my little sisters would enjoy. Rabbits, seriously? No, these rabbits are different—they have swords, and a war, and a lost king. They have a well-written, compelling story (good enough to have quotes out of it!) that surprised me with its depth of plot. The cover shows that it was probably intended for middle graders. Sorry, eight-to-twelve-year-olds, I claim it. It’s mine. The Setting:Set in the fantasy world of Natalia—a world very much like our own—this book had a nice heroic and medieval feel. Since it’s told from the perspective of rabbits, that made the action quite different from your usual book; and it also made the regular dangers of the forest even scarier. Seriously, imagine being able to jump around like crazy while you are sword fighting or to give a wolf a hard kick with your hind legs. The Story:The story was very good, better than some things I’ve read that are for older audiences! At first glance, it seems quite similar to all the other oh-wow-we’re-the-lost-heirs-of-wherever books. Not so in the least! Very surprising and satisfying. There were also great lessons on forgiveness and heart-warming (even funny!) moments along the way.The Characters:I loved Heather and Picket—they were so real. (I even forgot they were rabbits at some points.) Emma, Gort, Uncle Wilfred, and Smalls were also great favorites of mine. I found Kyle and Helmer intriguing and couldn’t wait to find out who they really were. The Concerns:Parents should have caution in choosing this book for younger readers because of some intense, un-graphic action and some bad attitude that is later resolved. Also, SPOILER ALERT!!!! Heather and Picket’s home is burnt by some pretty scary wolves, and they don’t know what happened to their parents and baby brother. And because they are rabbits (that’s not important though, right?) when they are underground there is mention of creepy creatures chasing them and the wolves do threaten to eat them sometimes. And, SPOILER ALERT AGAIN!!! massive battle at the end does mention rabbits being dead or wounded. So—read this book!!!!! I found it to be an awesome, well-written story! It is actually the second book, but it can pretty much stand-alone.

Courage, fear, loyalty, betrayal, secrets, and promise ... this story captured the imagination of our entire family (with children ages 1-18) and held us in its grasp until the last page.Worth every penny.
