About the Author

Denise Anderson is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington, where she teaches a variety of courses including general microbiology, medical bacteriology laboratory, and medical mycology/parasitology laboratory. Yes, this is a Haggadah but it is more than a Haggadah … it connects the text with our past and our future, making it relevant for the present. Rabbi Blech has taken a half century of his teaching to a generation of American Jews and put it into print for those who have not been privileged, like I have, to learn firsthand from him. This Haggadah contains within it a deeper understanding of everything from Maimonides 13 Principles of Faith to the different names of God, to an understanding of the Jewish calendar and when can we expect the arrival of the Messiah. Not bad for a Haggadah! But this is much more than a Haggadah … this book is an encyclopedia of Jewish knowledge that every Jewish person can learn from and understand.

This thoughtful and well written book elevated our family seder. Rabbi Blech is a a community treasure and his insights are transformational.Based on this truly unique book, I was able to create this memorable outline which I shared at my seder table (see attached) . A must buy or borrow for 2018.

Rabbi Blech’s book contains both the Passover Haggadah with insightful, comprehensive, and informative commentary, which frequently takes up half of every page, and a series of very interesting and educational essays, 23 in total, ranging from four to close to a dozen pages each. The two are in separate sections of the book. The Haggadah and commentary totaling 167 pages begin when one opens the book from the right side, the essays totaling 143 pages begin from the left side opening.The commentary explains dozens of things, such as why Jewish tradition assigns a unique blessing to be said over wine, the symbolism of the wine, why the middle matza is broken in half during the Seder and the bigger half saved to be eaten at the end of the seder, why are four questions asked at the seder and why is it done by the youngest child, what is the significance of mentioning four types of sons, why were the Israelites not in Egypt for 400 years despite a prophecy that this would occur, the secret of Jewish survival, the meaning of the plagues in Egypt, and much more.Among the 23 essays are the following: the five most important things about Passover, the meaning of the fifteen parts of the seder, the miracles of Jewish history, why does Jacob become Israel, the meaning of Shabbat HaGadol: history and destiny, why is bread burned before Passover begins, and more.
