The Sound of Cherry Blossoms: Zen Lessons from the Garden on Contemplative Design, by Martin Hakubai Mosko Alxe Noden

Review

“The Sound of Cherry Blossoms is a profound, soulful book. Simple and practical but also expansive, it offers wise instruction about how to create a garden that facilitates contemplation. But it does much more than this. It invites readers into serious reflection about how to enter more deeply into life, how to cultivate true awareness of the living world and of oneself as part of the larger whole. This is the transformative vision at the heart of this beautiful, precious book.” —Douglas E. Christie, author of The Blue Sapphire of the Mind   “In this meditation on contemplative design, Mosko and Noden delicately balance practical advice and spiritual insight. An antidote to the mindlessness of computer-driven design, this book understands design as part of a holistic process of finding harmony. Written with concision and clarity, the authors show how the worlds of spiritual practice and landscape design come together in the contemplative Japanese garden. The Sound of Cherry Blossoms is an important manifesto.” —Kendall H. Brown, author of Quiet Beauty and Visionary Landscapes   “It was in our monastery’s sacred garden on Kauai island—a garden that Martin Mosko helped create—where this book took wing. Through him and his work, he taught me that if a garden is created with awareness from the beginning, it will become divine. Mosko and Noden can teach us how to make that happen, inside and out.”— Sadasivanathaswami

There are very few books that move me to write in the margins and to underline particularly important sentences. This book is one such. As Landscape Architects, we must listen to our clients, ourselves, and ultimately to what the land is telling us. This book explains how and why we should do this in a simple writing style that is profoundly clear and insightful. Thank you, Martin, for sharing your thoughts.

“The garden is…a place to experience ourselves as we are, in peace, perhaps for the first time.” Mosko and Norton are like Johnny Appleseeds trotting around the world leaving beautiful gardens in their wake. Planting peace. How do they do that? This refreshing book shows us how. First, the gardener does this in his own mind and then, it blooms as a garden. A place of refuge in a hurry up world where we can stop and notice the simple beauty of life and rest in “the sound of cherry blossoms”, the delight of the present moment.Mosko takes us along on his journey and shares with us the careful listening, attention and effort that go into creating an environment that seems to effortlessly flow. “We ask rock to help us to know where it wants to go. Then we assist it to relax and rest comfortably.”I especially appreciated the chapter about how to visualize and then stabilize a vision – “turning the ideal into the real”. Useful for our daily lives! And the stories about specific gardens and people he worked with and even the gardens that didn’t end up getting built! This slim book is a garden itself ~ nourishing fruit of the authors’ years of practice ~Thank you!

Almost finished. Great book. Forever changing the way I inhabit and view spaces

Well written......good ideas to explore when designing one s own garden retreat space

Martin's cogent style is so relaxed, peaceful, and wise that almost anything he writes is an enjoyable, insightful read. He uses gardens as a metaphor and as a way to learn about the self, life, purpose, and happiness. I highly recommend this book and his others - he is a true giver.

Martin Hakubai Mosko is master story teller with an aesthetic foundation firmly rooted in a lineage of zen teachers who invite the essential nature of all things to flourish with "encouragement". Martin's design sense as well as his teaching style is one of allowing each element to express itself fully and harmoniously in relationship with the others. This is a wonderfully instructive treatise on living in the relative world. Thank you Martin Mosko and Alxe Noden for this opportunity to share your vision.

In this must read for gardeners and all who seek to better understand themselves and their place in the universe, Martin Mosko writes: "I have seen how a garden can affect people's lives in ways both profound and ordinary." As one of his clients, I have been profoundly affected by him personally and one of his gardens for close to twenty years, both while in the garden and in the larger arena of life. By sharing his insights and wisdom, Martin has been a friend, garden mentor, and spiritual teacher to his many clients over the past five decades. Now though The Sound of Cherry Blossoms, he and Alxe Noden will become the same to all who read this inspirational book.
