Review

"We Were One is feelingly narrated by an intrepid war historian who risked his own life to capture every raw minute of their story."--Hampton Sides, author of Blood and Thunder and Ghost Soldiers"A magnificent tale of combat--mixing valor, grit, love, blood, and sacrifice. This book defines what it means to be a Marine grunt."--Bing West, author of The March Up and No True Glory"We Were One is a dramatic tale of courage, hardship, and the extraordinarily difficult challenges faced by a gallant Marine unit in one of the world's deadliest places. Patrick O'Donnell brilliantly and compassionately recounts the story of our American sons called upon to fight, bleed, die, and survive in a hostile land."--Carlo D'Este, author of Patton: A Genius for War"As an embedded journalist in an Infantry Platoon, O'Donnell paints an authentic picture of our Nation's most precious assets--the Marine Riflemen--engaged in one of their fiercest fights. We Were One is a gritty, boots-on-the-ground account that enables readers to witness the overwhelming will and courage of Marines as they move against the enemy."--J.N. Mattis, Lieutenant General, U.S. Marine Corps, Commanding General, I Marine Expeditionary Force"Pat O'Donnell was with us on the ground in Fallujah--house to house. His story is historically accurate and describes the greatest personal and professional test of our lives. We Were One is destined to be a classic of urban close combat and honors the memory of all who made the ultimate sacrifice for their brother Marines. I am deeply thankful that Pat kept his oath to Lima Company."--Lt. Col. Willard A. Buhl, CO Task Force 3/1, Operation AL FAJR"A detailed, blow-by-blow description of the brutal street fighting...These Marines fought with great courage and the details of their battle make gripping reading."―Publishers Weekly"[We Were One] clearly reflects valor and courage."―Kirkus Reviews"First-rate reading...Admirably depicts the brutal realities of street-to-street, house-to-house fighting...Captures the sensory details and emotional drama of good men killing and dying for one another and their country."―Marine Corps Times, Air Force Times, Navy Times, and Army Times"One of the best books to come out of the recent conflict in the Middle East is this blistering account of fighting the toughest of Iraq's insurgents...Riveting and frightening...In many ways this has the same intensity of experience as Mark Bowden's classic Black Hawk Down. An exhilarating and instructive read."―Military Illustrated"A blue-collar, in-your-face, real-life depiction of marines fighting an ingenious, determined, and radical mujahideen insurgency...This book's perspective makes it stand out among others that deal with such battles. The author's decision to write about Fallujah through the eyes and experiences of those who fought it-and to draw on his own observations-brings credibility and a real sense of truth to a compelling story of bravery, courage, and commitment to something greater than oneself."―Air & Space Power Journal

About 10 years ago my wife Ann & I were in a shopping mall. I'm a marine veteran and I always wear the marine emblem on my cap. A young man came over to me and said, "Semper Fi" this is a marine 's traditional way of greeting another marine. This young marine told us that he just returned home from Iraq. He said his unit (he did not identify the unit) was in the battle for Fallujah. This young marine had to talk to someone He did most of the talking. Bye the time he was.finished talking my wife was in tears and I was really close to crying.. He did not tell us his name but he did say he was a Sgt. he told us he killed a lot of bad guys but he also saw a lot of his buddies killed and wounded. We did not want to leave him alone but he wouldn't go with us. We urged him to get help when he returned to his unit. I just finished reading"We were one Shoulder to Shoulder" author Patrick O'DonnellWith every page I saw this young marine's face. I feel that this young marine Sgt. read this book to me and my wife before it was written. I often think of this young marine I hope he survived the war and I hope he killed his demons. I once had a marine WW2 vet tell me, Ed they say that we're the Greatest Generation but I Say this generation is the greatest . Why ,because. we fought in a war we were not allowed to lose. This generation is fighting a war they are Not Allowed to Win. I would highly recommend this book be read by everyone.

Without a doubt, this is the finest book about Marines in urban combat that I have ever read. As a Marine machine gunner in Vietnam with 13 months of combat under my belt, I can honestly say that this account is real and raw. While reading it, I was flashed back to combat several times and I felt what these fine Marines from 3/1 were going through. Hats off to the author and Hand Salute to these brave Marines. A must read for all Americans. Semper Fi. Van

Wow!! I was so impressed by this book!! I am not a fan of reading but I finished this book in 2 days!! I one day wish to be made a MARINE, and this book represents the reasons why!! During this marvelous story you learn of this 0311 squad and there task at hand!! Though very difficult and tiring the Marines pull it off!! They take Fallujah... U start out reading this book about this squad and how and why they are trained in such a manner.... To put it simply U FIGHT AND DIE FOR THE MAN NEXT TO U, "HE THAT SHEDS BLOOD WITH ME TODAY WILL BE MY BROTHER." And that is exactly what these marines do, they all come from different backgrounds, joined for different reasons, have been in the service for different amounts of time, have their own goals for after the war... (ONE WISHES TO DRIVE A BUDWEISER TRUCK WHEN HE GETS BACK HOME TO THE STATES), and yet they all come together and are a brother hood!! My favorite Marine is Lance Corporal Michael Hanks!! He is everything I pictured a MARINE should be.... he does his job, trains his men, fears nothing, leads by example, but also follows orders when sergeants give them to him. (MAN WITH MOST PAINT ON HIS FACE ON FRONT PIC.) As you read this book, you later understand why he is also my favorite.... As for the rest of the squad they each have there Partners/buddies.... Everything they do they do together, in fact a pair of Marines the squad decides to blend the two's first names together because they are with eachother so much! I could go on and on but shouldnt..... Just pay close attention to how each one treats the others specifically and in the end you realize why some react differently to the harm done to their closest fellow marine. This book is realistic, has humor, makes you laugh, sad, cry, angry, u name it, you will feel it.... I have such great respect and love for these men that fought for our country!!! I hope that one day I could be half the marine Lance Corporal Michael Hanks was.... AND THE HARDEST PART OF ALL THIS WAS THEM FIGHTING THE ENEMY THAT DID NOT FOLLOW COMBAT RULES, OR THE ENEMY THAT COULD NOT BE SEEN.... AND CLEARING EVERY HOME SEVERAL TIMES BECAUSE THE ENEMY KEPT REOCCUPYING THE HOMES AND GRABBING STASHED WEAPONS WHICH THEY HAD EVERYWHERE...

My memory of the Battle of Fallujah is what was reported by the news and the events leading up to this engagement. This book explained in detail the preparation and ultimate engagement of USMC 3rd Marines in Fallujah. It reminded me of Eugene Sledge book "The Old Breed", which described the horrors of war and the brotherhood. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about this significant battle and give you a better appreciation for the sacrifices made by our soldiers, sailors, and Marines.Although I have not read this book as of yet, there is a book written on the Army sector of this same battle which has also received great reviews. The title of the book is, "House to House: An Epic Memoir of War".
