This book was recommended at a workshop at my university (I'm a faculty member), and I'm very glad I bought it. Though it's aimed at psychologists, it's fantastic for all academic writers. (You can skim a few parts, if you're not a psychologist.) Very short and to the point, which I also appreciated. The one thing I will note, for folks for whom it's relevant: the author clearly doesn't have children, and it's not written with parents of young children in mind. As long as you understand the perspective, should be a very useful book for anyone who wishes they were writing more.

To Dr. Paul Silvia, author of How to Write a Lot: A Practical Guide to Productive Academic Writing, I want to say: Ouch, that was a real slap in the face, but thank you.A few days ago, I was gladly notified of the acceptance of my proposal to present at a graduate student research conference this fall. Considering the grave importance of producing the most satisfactory piece of academic writing as my first official foray into the academia, I wanted to be as well prepared as possible. A firm advocate of the Chinese idiom -- sharpening your axe before cutting the firewood is never a waste of time -- and a long-time beneficiary of a myriad of how-to books, I picked Dr. Silvia's How to Write a Lot as one of my reference materials.This book starts out with bona fide face slapping -- piercing, painfully accurate diagnosis and demystification of the four most prevailing "specious barriers" to writing a lot. And I scored 3 out of 4. Yes, I am the one who constantly complains about not being able to find time to write yet never miss my favorite TV show. "Binge writers are also binge readers and binge statisticians." Bingo! You often say "I'm waiting until I feel like it." How do you know that?!For me, holding the misconception of creativity being a flash of inspiration out of nowhere is the most lethal of all. Flash of light, bolt of lightening, and alignment of stars have rarely happened, yet the sheer scarcity of their occurrences ironically further feeds my illusion. Dr. Silvia makes all attempts -- scientific, psychological, and motivational -- to hammer home to his readers the simple point that "writing breeds good ideas for writing." Inspiration comes through diligent scheduling, not desultory daydreaming.Another life-altering wake up call for me is the principle of "write first, revise later." I was indeed in a misguided quest for the perfect first draft throughout graduate school. It would take me forever to write down a perfect first sentence before I can move on to the next one. It is the self-inflicting malpractice of writing that makes writing more excruciating that it already is. Hence the procrastination. Hence the analysis paralysis.Besides the heart-pumping motivation and trenchant guidance on how to implement a writing schedule, this book also provides insights on submission and resubmission of academic journals, writing a book, and other aspects of academic writing any scholar will encounter in their professional life. I look forward to the day when I revisit this book for specific advice on those parts, but for now, I will just enjoy the zen of scheduled writing with the magical weapon of the prolific Anthony Thrllope -- "a piece of cobbler's wax on my chair."

This book has one basic message: if you want to write, sit down and write. That's it. Draw up a schedule and stick to it, no matter what. It would be unfair that reading this review gives you as much information on writing as Silvia's book does, but my first line really is the take-home message the author offers.Furthermore, the book gives a cruel, but enlightening analysis of common excuses academics offer for not writing as much as they could; a few tips and tricks on grammar; the structure of journal articles (in psychology); dealing with rejection of your submitted work; and publishing a book. But although these advices makes sense, they are also at times a bit self-evident.In general, I liked the book because it was an easy, quick read that motivated me to indeed draw up my own writing schedule and start writing. But I wouldn't tell my friends to spend money on it (I would recommend consulting the nearest library), so I won't give it more than three stars. It just needs some more substantiatial arguments than that one take-home message to justify giving it four stars...

This is a simple and relatively short book, because it does not need to be long. I've struggled for years, trying to figure out why I can't make writing flow more easily and why I always end up pushed against deadlines needing entire days or weekends or weeks to finish writing something I could have (and should have) finished earlier. Even if you aren't sure why you don't write the way you wish you could, this book can probably help you. Many thanks to the author.

They appear so small I doubt there is a number, perhaps below 1. If I'm reading a Kindle book on a Kindle reader I expect to be able to read all the figures, tables, and data related information. Perhaps a magnification setting would be appropriate like on Apple Touch 4G. A long press with your finger brings up a magnifier of the specific words you are looking at so you can edit.To readers: I would also like to request more academic writing suggestions for Applied Linguistics. My program was weak so I need to teach myself. So if you have any book recommendations or website recommendations please advise. To get the ball rolling, I recommend Writing Under Pressure, by Sanford Kaye. Thanks in advance
