About the Author
Ethne Clarke is an award-winning journalist, former garden editor of Traditional Home, and contributing editor for House & Garden. Well-known as the author of a number of best-selling books on practical gardening, design and landscape history, she holds a Master of Philosophy from the faculty of Fine Art, De Montfort University, England. Her research has involved a close study of architectural history between the Arts and Crafts period and early Modernism, and this has been a guiding influence on the renovation of her house and garden in Colorado―a small midcentury modern ranch built in 1958.

My family in Oregon who just bought a mid-century home are still thanking me for this wonderfully photographed and expansively detailed book on mid-century modern homes, emphasizing their outdoor landscapes. Now I want one similar only detailing Northwest properties over the Palm Springs concentric homes featured here.
As a midcentury person, I have always loved midcentury architecture. I lived near an Eichler neighbor hood and would take the side streets just to see them. Living in Evanston, IL I loved driving Sheridan Road thru “the ravines†to see Ferris Beuhler style homes.I loved that the Intro pages highlighted my home town of Park a Forest, IL. In high school I never knew Ethne to have a green thumb but when she moved to England she found her calling. She has studied all styles of gardens for her books and you can tell she knows what she is showing and talking about.I am going to love reading the rest of the book. And looking at all the pictures again and again.It’s a lovely, fun,
This book is absolutely beautiful. A good balance of text and pictures. Very knowledgeable text covering the antecedents of Modern design and numerous examples of some of the finest landscape designs.
This beautifully, and intelligently, researched and written book is a rich surprise of past, present and practical, wonderfully providing an international view which is rare in mid-century writing. I find it a joy to read, to learn and to apply. 5 Stars!

Great book and in great condition! Definitely would recommend for mid-century modern enthusiasts or anyone interested in MCM landscaping.
I wish this book had been available when I was a landscape design student years ago. The weaving together of art, design, architecture, gardens, and social changes in a beautifully written book (with excellent photographs) is amazing. My only reservation is the color of the typeface - it's gray, not black, and makes reading in less than bright light a bit of a challenge. Regardless, I highly recommend it - you won't be disappointed.
Ethne Clarke beautifully captures the style and soul of every garden(er) she meets. Her writing style is elegantly engaging, full of insight, wit and charm. What a gem.
