I am a sucker for bleak books and chose this one because of the blurb by Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee author, of the Emperor of All Maladies, which I loved. But it turns out that this book is not bleak. Mostly it's instructive, inspirational, and hopeful. Julie Yip-Williams, with beliefs based in Buddhism, shows the world through her words how to approach death with" the dignity and grace of an evolved soul." As someone who has tried and failed at Christianity (for which I have no regrets), I find her philosophy thought-provoking. If there's a silver lining in this beyond this pretty brilliant book, it's that she had access to excellent care and was blessed with seemingly exceedingly intelligent and amazingly talented children and an excellent support system. The authors' recounting of her life (which almost ended in infanticide), including up-by-her bootstraps educational efforts achieved in spite of blindness, her battle with stage IV cancer (including intimate details about her treatment and the disease's progression), and thoughts about her impending death are intertwined masterfully. Like Paul Kalanithi's book When Breath Becomes Air, she shows readers what choosing to live a life less ordinary in the face of tragedy looks like. What I love most is that she acknowledges her own flaws in thinking and acting (and that of others) in the face of this unfairness and "how impotent we truly are in the face of unseen forces that would cause the earth to tremble or cells to mutate and send a body into full rebellion against itself," yet sees through to the beauty in life. In the end, she exhorts us to, "Live while you're living."

Absolutely love this book. I could not put this book down and I wished I had read this years before when my sister-in-law was dying of cancer, or when my friend was dying of cancer also. I know it was a way for the author, Julie, to write down her thoughts and feelings during the last few days of her life. It was a testimony to her family, her love of life and it was honest, emotionally piercing to the soul and tender. There was anger in the book, which she did not deny herself of, grief and joy.I cannot tell more about it because if I do, I will spoil it for the next reader and I cannot do that. This book is not one of those happy books where the reader dies gracefully and peacefully. No. She raged against the fates but at the same time, she was so appreciative of the world we live in. She did cry and she will make you cry, but she will also make you admire her at the end for being so divinely human. Her bravery was not in how she died, but in how she embraced her life and how she shared it with the rest of us. She opened her heart to the world and for this reader, she has left an unforgettable imprint on my life.

I ordered and read this book because I've had Stage 3 cancer and I needed to know what this author had to say about her Stage 4 journey, in case I end up there. I am glad the author was so honest about her feelings, including her resentments when comparing her fate to those of others. We read obituaries that make cancer victims sound like saints and pillars of courage as they battled to stay alive, but I knew I wasn't the only one who had doubts, feelings of weakness, and other negative thoughts. I totally related to the author's desire to shout "I have cancer!! I'm dying!!" as she smiled and exchanged pleasantries with others, and I related to the sensation of being suddenly cut off and removed from other people and the world itself.The author died young and left two small children behind. This makes her story sadder. I'm glad she went into great detail about the treatments she pursued for her cancer, including the array of drugs. I declined all drugs except those used for surgery, but I am interested in others' decisions and how they feel about those choices later on. Stage 4, which is metastatic cancer, is a different ball game, and I could relate to the author's sense that many don't understand what Stage 4 means for survival chances. I've felt many people may be misled by the cheerleading for people who have had Stage 1 breast cancer, for example, while those with metastatic cancer and poor survival chances are kind of disregarded, even in "support" groups. The author seemed to feel that even some with metastatic cancer are not facing the reality of their situation and that they hold out unrealistic hope for beating the cancer even as they are at death's door. I'm not sure what to say to that. I know people who have survived Stage 4 for many years. What we tell ourselves is important. In the end, though, we are just left to wonder why outcomes differ. Books like this one help us gather some clues, perhaps.The book is a bit repetitive about the author's early experiences with being born blind and having family members almost kill her because of it. I feel these passages are repetitive because the book is really a journal, and these were things the author revisited a number of times to gain resolution as she faced her mortality.I was heartened to read her husband's contribution to the book. I'm glad to have read what they shared. Thank you.

This book had been compared to “When Breath Becomes Air” which I read and loved. I did not love this book, nor did I like it. Although it is sad that Julie died at a young age leaving two young daughters, I did not connect with her at all. Her descriptions of how best to live your life were irritating. Having had friends who died of stage IV cancer, I was annoyed at her negative description of people who choose to remain hopeful in the face of a horrible disease. When some people have to schedule their chemo on a Friday so they can return to work on Monday, Julie never returned to her job after her diagnosis. She discussed the great effort it took her, after purchasing the apartment next door, to work with contractors to double the size of their living space. Money to buy the best was not an object. I never got the impression that she realized how fortunate she was to have family to help her and the freedom to choose treatment without worrying about paying for it.

Had I heard about Nilofer's concept of "onlyness" back then, I probably would have focused less on what everyone else was doing and placed greater trust in my own ability to serve.What Nilofer does in The Power of Onlyness is make an extremely convincing case that ANY one of us can contribute to our communities when we take full ownership of our unique positioining in the world and take action based on those insights and/or ideas that only we have.I was quite skeptical to pick up this book because there are so many books out there in this category that lack substance. I am really, really glad I gave The Power of Onlyness a chance. The book is a very thoughtful read and if you are the social change type, I highly recommend picking it up. It might change your life.

I had fallen out of love with poetry and Neil brought me back home with Our Numbered Days. This is the only book I have ever preordered that wasn't Harry Potter. Each poem is beautifully crafted yet raw (sometimes to the point of pain) and painstakingly earnest, almost to a fault, yet by the end of each you feel like you've made a new friend. The imagery is evocative and multilayered. I find a nuance each time I reread. Wall Drug destroyed me. Then the rest of the journey put me back together again. Can we always be friends?

Got this as a gift for my girlfriend (she loves poetry) she loved it and since she would not stop talking about it, I asked her to read me the poems as I drived around with her. I cam honestly say its a deep and meaningful read and helps you understand the mind of someone who suffers from depression and other mental dissorders. Totally recommend it.

I kept telling myself I had to stop buying slim little volumes of poetry that I devoured in one day, and then this book came out and I continued to tell myself that. But then I couldn’t stand it anymore and bought it. Neil Hilborn’s poems are emotionally moving, heart tugging , gut-wrenching, and worth every penny. If you’ve enjoyed watching him perform his work and are tired of entering his name in google search, just get the book. You’ll probably love it.

I love Neil's poetry. I never even thought about poetry before hearing some of the pieces from Our Numbered Days but after that I knew I needed to read every piece Neil had published. The Future did not disappoint either. I watched him perform some of the poems at his book release show and it's crazy the emotion he puts into each line. This book is for anyone who wants to smile, laugh, cry, scream, or just wants to read poetry. I love it

One element, often neglected, is the necessity of understanding and learning the "language" of the subject. Vaughn spends a substantial amount of time clearly making this point: how to read philosophy and how to learn its language nuances. From there, one can follow his guidance on actually writing. Excellent guide.

I have found in my long life that to best understand a difficult subject, it is very useful to write out a critical essay of what I am reading. I've developed a recent interest in the work of philosophical thinkers from Aristotle onward. Now these works can be quite dense with meaning and I was looking for a book on specialized techniques for writing philosophy to help me formulate my own thoughts on the important topics found in philosophical thought. I know these techniques exist (see for example youtube videos of UC Berkeley History of Philosophy 25A (available on iUniversity or through archives.org Creative Commons site).So I was very disappointed in this book. The level of instruction in clear writing and critical thinking is at the level of a junior in high school. The instructions are so basic. Writing for a particular audience, how to paraphrase, how to support a simple proposition with equally simple arguments. All good stuff but stuff that at least I learned as a sophomore or junior in English class. Additionally, the examples given in the book of "good" argument are laughable, simplistic, full of unsupported assumptions, and frankly do NOT do a good of supporting a proposition at any critical level. These essay examples however are grammatically well written and logical at a high school freshman level.Why two stars rather than one star. Two reasons. 1. I have been out of college for 30 years and perhaps this is just the sad state of affairs of the modern college experience - remedial education. 2. For what it is, the instruction is good and clear - it just does not do a good job of what is implied in the title "writing philosophy.My advice is that if you are looking for a book to help you with remedial writing skills for college this one is great but if you have any skills at all in critical writing but want something keyed to philosophic writing look elsewhere to a more rigorous book.

I recommend this book especially for Philosophy courses. He dispels the myth of needing to use big words when philosophizing and shows you how you can write an effective essay by just being you.

While I am not a fan of Vaughns work in other areas, This is a solid text that provides invaluable instruction in writing philosophical essays. Particular attention is paid to discerning the arguments that philosophers make. Then, once the philosophy has been read and understood, Vaughn instructs on the method of summarization and response. A must-have for Philosophy, writing for critical thinking courses.

It seems as though he has taken a mishmash of information gathered from Jimmy Chang, the Shen-Hammer system, his personal experience, and other pulse systems and calls it his own. This book is one of the best I have read for beginners in the art of pulse diagnosis. Having said that there is lots of new information as well for those who are experienced. Rather than detailing which Herb or acupoint or combinations to use this strategy talked in general principles or strategies. For example, if the pulse reveals a Blood Stasis with Qi and Blood Deficiency then the treatment strategy is to invigorate blood 70-80% plus tonify and nourish blood -20-30 %. In fact, although this book is primarily aimed for the Chinese Medicine market it could easily be used by other practitioners such as Medical Doctors , physiotherapists etc. Once the guiding principles are arrived at then there are endless treatment possibilities. In summary a must read for all Therapists !!

Essential book for anyone wanting to master pulse diagnosis! This systematic approach is clear and easy to follow.MPD has revolutionized my practice. 100% more practical and applicable to real world Clinical practice than what was taught in school.I especially like this as a Clinic handbook reference guide with percentages of treatment principles for each aberrant pulse. Shows details on pulse positions so as not to get confused.Although this is not a book with herbal recommendations, Bob is extremely generous with herbal details and suggestions on Doane.us and the DNA/MPD Facebook page. After you get this book, practice it and get hands-on training for confirmation! A true revolution for our medicine.

This is a good quality paperback book with great legibility. The graphics are great and all are supported by text. You don't have to flip through pages to find which graphic is being referred to! It's obvious a lot of thought went into the end users experience. It is intelligently written & practically applicable. I use this method on a daily basis in my practice. It is the first time I feel I have gotten a good understaning of pulse diagnosis that makes sense in both TCM & Western Medicine.

This style of pulse diagnosis makes so much sense! After reading the book you can instantly apply the pulse taking skill to your clinic. The illustrations and descriptions are clear and concise. The book is simple, but you may need to read it over a few times and keep practicing on every person you meet.I have been using this method of pulse diagnosis for the past year. It’s been really helpful in clinic. I have been to both Jimmy Chang’s and Bob Doane’s workshops, and absolutely recommend learning directly from them.

Finally a concise manual on how to effectively take the pulse. These are the most crucial skills of any acupuncturist and this manual makes it easy to study, practice and utilize the Chinese medical pulse system in your clinic. Can't wait for a follow up edition that includes herbs to treat these pulse presentations!
