I hate to say this, cos it's such a pretty book, but it's NOT for the average person without a lot of time and some money. FYI: sugar and vinegar are main ingredients. I've made delish raw sauerkraut, veggie krauts and pickles without sugar or vinegar. I know all part of the 5 tastes, but if you are diabetic or watching yr weight, watch out! She offers NO alternatives.HUGE downsides cos she expects you to:a) know how to cook (what exactly is "poaching"?);b) have a food processor, dutch oven and some other pricey gear;c) not sure what some of her descriptions mean (piquant?);d) many of these take some time (washing, cutting, covering with exact amount of weight, rinsing, squeezing liquid, patting veggies dry, then more steps);e) should own HUGE jars (2-3 quarts wide mouth to pound the veggies down. My 2 qt Mason jars are huge. Is she preparing for an army?);f) She says some lame thing about being "punk rock" if you prep squid yrself. As an early, infamous punk rock photographer who documented and participated in punk's earliest days/evenings, I am not amused. You think punk rock is about prepping squid?? Yes, it's "doing it yourself," but what does it have to do with punk rock? It's insulting. GET REAL.g) I'm a excellent cook but I don't know how to poach or have some of the high end gear she uses. I wonder how ppl made these pickles before food processors? I have a variable low temp dehydrator, which she NEVER mentions. She keeps saying to put a wooden spoon to keep the oven door open, turn oven to 200 degrees to dry food. I also have a very high end juicer, blender, and some other items. But what is a dutch oven? Can I use other large soup pots?Gimme some help, here, Karen. We don't have all the same kitchen gear.People ask me all the time for my raw pickling recipes. I learned from books and online. But I'm baffled about some of her steps. IF ppl can't figure out how to make simple raw pickles from cucumber, garlic, dill, pickling spices, salt and water, they will be really baffled by some of her instructions.One should not have to use the net or other books to figure out what she is saying. We are not all gourmet cooks in the way she prepares food. I wish she'd offered alternatives.She's trying to be funny and friendly, she writes WAY above many heads. That's all.On the plus side: GORGEOUS photos, beautifully designed book, a delight to hold and read. IF you have the time and money to gather the supplies (including the various ingredients: fermented black beans? She doesn't tell us how to make that, just includes in a recipe) and make these, I'm sure you will be rewarded.Giving it 4 stars cos some ppl will LOVE this book. Gimme Sandor Katz's Wild Fermentation. I haven't bought his Art of Fermenting yet. Of course, he doesn't focus on the complex spices of Asian Pickles. I'm sure this is a keeper for ppl who like this kind of thing.PS I borrowed from library to see if I wanted to buy it. Think not. Found a couple of recipes I'll try. I keep wanting to fall in love with this book, but instead getting irritated and depressed reading it. I'll make my own recipes. Gorgeous photos!

I have made most of the recipes in this book and I have gone into new pickles dimensions never before dreamed! The BEST pickles I ever ate are the garbanzo beans (have made twice and use them on top of bed of greens with pickled beets and feta cheese! YUM!). If you love India spices, give the beans a try. I pickled the beets with the same recipe. I am currently waiting for my lemons to mature, also the black bean paste, as well as the pickled garlic. It's an exciting venture. The apricots, however, were very disappointing. So much salt that they were inedible.

I have tried about 15 of the recipes contained in this book and all came out very well. I highly recommend this book if you have a love of pickled or fermented asian side dishes. Some can be canned, but some can be eaten freshly made.

I should've read the description more carefully and realized that this wasn't written by a true Asian pickle expert, but by some copy-cat with her own opinionated tastes! This wasn't what I was looking for from the start! My fault for not checking it more carefully, this book is totally useless to me!

On a rainy day in Seattle, I sat in a book-filled delicatessen waiting for a friend's eye surgery to be completed. I never would have picked this up and looked at it except that I had hours to kill. It's so obscure, and yet, I found it to be the most inspiring cookbook I've come across in a long time. I want to make nearly all of the recipes in here. It's not just pickles, there are loads of condiments. There's even a recipe for XO sauce that I'm thrilled to have because it's gluten-free, unlike the commercial sauce. Some salads are included too. The photographs of each dish makes them seem more approachable and compelling. I was so intrigued by the new ideas in this book that I had to buy a copy. I think my lunches are about to get a whole lot more interesting. I highly recommend this cookbook.FWIW, every single recipe in this book is either naturally gluten-free or can easily be made gluten-free by substituting g-f soy sauce and g-f miso.

This book has the majority of all the pickles I wanted to know how to make, being an aficionado of Asian cuisine.

This is an excellent book. I have been making Japanese and Korean pickles for almost 30 years, and I have to tell you that her explanations of proper equipment, ingredients, techniques and storage are top-notch. For me, the real gems are the Chinese pickles. I will never have to buy funky bags o' pickles at the Asian grocery, which in and of itself should be enough impetus for any Asian food lover to buy this book. The salt-cured long beans with with ginger are some of our faves (I ramp up the garlic in these for my daughter), and the XO sauce! The Tomato tamarind Chutney is a hit on grilled sharp cheddar cheese sandwiches. I could go on and on. The one caveat (and it's not so much a caveat as a heads-up) for the average western pickle fiend is that the majority of these pickles are NOT long term keepers,-they do not undergo processing to keep for years on a shelf. But I find that to be the absolute genius of the recipes in this book...buy fresh, eat fresh, stay fresh!Karen's writing style is light and humorous, and it is really easy to engage in her recipes and the book as a whole. I seriously love this book, and I think you will too.

Adds to anyone who loves to culture, ferment and can repertoire! I have tried several recipes already Would like to see less with sugar and white vinegars, but still has many traditional recipes to make it work having.

A very interesting look at the development of some of the games that shaped the development of MMOs and the internet itself that I'd recommend to anybody who likes to nerd out about systems. A fair bit of it is repurposed content from his blog, but there's enough new material and exploration of game design concepts that come from a refreshingly different perspective than seen in today's AAA landscape to make it well worth a read, especially if you haven't already trawled through his archives like I have.

Riddled with spelling errors. Also, I should’ve look at the description more closely. This is not the little book, it’s a 6” bound edition, and the copy is ugly. Disappointing

This edition looks like it was compiled from websites with a low-resolution scan for the cover. Do not waste your money on this edition. You could get the same thing by Googling the Little Red Book and printing out the text you find.

The Chinese quotations seem to be printed well, but the English translations seem, as if they were printed by several different machines and printers and then made into a book. If you don't speak English well, then look for another version with better printings.

They claim its original but it's actually just a reprinted version on regular sized paper. I spent ten dollars on something could have printed out for free

The print and binding quality feels cheaper than a local copy shop. Otherwise the content is fine.

Excellent service. Speedy delivery. Book was as described. The book harks back to the times when Chairman Mao's thoughts were widely read and enjoyed worldwide. The book was not available generally in the US as conflict between Communism and capitalism was intense at that time. The sayings of Chairman Mao are published in this book. They relate to philosophies of war, economics, politics, etc.

Not what I expected. this is not the entire book but excerpts!

What can you say about Mao's little red book that launched countless revolutions across the world? I can say that I am still firmly a capitalist, but it does provide significant historical accounts of speeches given by Chairman Mao, and as a historian I am very interested in Asian history, and Mao by extension.

As I sit in my living room on Tilghman Island, Maryland reading over Swift's account, I struggle with the realization that his story has ended and that the end of Tangier Island too is near. I'm sad for both.Swift's reporting and objectivity on a very emotional subject are par excellence. I was struck by his ability to tell the story as an insider yet step outside that view to keep us from thinking he was too sentimental.Tilghman may very well be the first casualty in America of sea level rise that is caused by global warming but as we read the story it is natural to think that maybe the islanders's assumption of land erosion holds water, no pun intended.The most stunning revelation for me is that the image of a bygone civilization that survives to this day is completely wrong. The fact that this tiny island has been touched by the ugly hand of opioid addiction and drug dealing (as is the case here on Tilghman) shattered my perception of a place I'd like to escape to to flee the madness we face as a culture today.Nonetheless read the story and draw your own conclusions.Thanks Mr. Swift for a job well done.

I think Earl Swift did a great job with this. As a "come here," with the disadvantages that brings, he managed to win over the Tangier residents so they would confide in him and include him in their daily life. I think not everyone could do that so well. As a result, he painted a vivid picture of the people and their way of life.As a person who has spent some time boating on the bay, and experienced the weather challenges from time to time, I admire the grit and knowledge of these hard-working island people. I know I would be hard pressed to do the job they do in helping me have the crabs and oysters I enjoy so much. That's what surprises me about their passive acceptance of the changes they all see on the island, and look for others to do something about it. Swift describes very well the prevailing attitude that "something ought to be done," but then no one does it. And complaining that others aren't doing enough about their situation. That seems completely contrary to the first sentence of this paragraph.My family tree shows generations of people that moved from New England and Virginia, through the Midwest, and on to the West Coast as they sought to improve their prospects. Covered Wagon folks and Dust Bowl Okies did the same. Yet these Tangier people just hang on as things deteriorate, and blame someone else. Knowlng all the good things they do, makes this even harder to understand. Many are devoutly religious, and think all is in God's hands. But, God did give us brains and expects us to use them.I am sure the Tangier folks know what they are talking about when they describe erosion as one of their problems (I think that's all Ooker does recognize). Yet cities all around, including nearby Norfolk, see clear proof of sea level rise. Why would Tangier be exempt? Why can't Ooker and his fellow residents see that both are happening? Ooker and the other islanders may think he won the debate with Al Gore, but month by month they will see they are wrong. And the fact that they think our President gives this any thought at all, and will bail them out, is completely naive.When the village finally disappears we will all have lost something. Kudos to Swift for describing it so well. But, ultimately my take on the book is a sadness that these Tangier residents are just standing by and waiting for someone else to change things. Which probably will never happen. Yes, a new jetty here, and some other patchwork there, will prolong things a bit, but before long it will all just fade away. What's their plan for that?

I grew up on Maryland’s Eastern Shore so I was excited to read this book. It is extremely well written - almost poetic in style - and very well researched. The book tends to alternate between fishing trips with the local watermen, history of the region, and discussions of the rising sea level and erosion of the island. The daily activities and character of the residents are discussed somewhat, but I found myself wanting to know much more. For instance, what do the island’s women do most of the day? He mentions in passing that the women run the island’s shops and restaurants. It would’ve been interesting if he’d spent a few days with some of the women and given more detail about their lives. He does briefly mention two women who own a restaurant, but does not provide much detail. What are the best dishes they cook, how do they feel about the tourists, what happens when they run out of an ingredient, are they happy with their lives? Do any women work the water? Likewise, I would have liked to hear how the island’s children feel about their lives - are they happy? Do they long to escape from the island, when they go to the mainland what do they think, etc. I am also curious to know how people who are not Methodist feel about living on the island - do they feel discriminated against or harassed or pressured? Do any of the spouses have extramarital affairs, and if so, what are the consequences? Does anyone on the island drink moderately or are all drinkers problem drinkers, as implied? I would recommend this book, especially if you have an interest in the subject matter, but it is best consumed in small doses, and I wish it were more captivating.

Couched as a "what the heck are they thinking" investigative report into the insular society of Tangier Island, this is really a portrait of an American community. Much emphasis is placed on how "different" and "unique" they are, but the overwhelming message is that the people of Tangier are pretty much just like everyone else. They cling to the past as part of their identity, believe what is convenient, hold opinions based on self-interest, and act like generally decent human beings while living in a challenging environment. The author asks, is this worth saving? And then spends the rest of the book making the emotional case that it is. Since he is looking for the reader to answer that question, as we all must as we support or reject the spending of public monies, my response is "no". There is, despite the author's -- and the Tangier inhabitants themselves' -- nostalgic yearnings, nothing special about this place or these people. Their forebears picked an unstable environment to plant themselves in, and it is time to move on. Cool that it is being documented, but it is just another blip in the history of the Bay.

Great book to have for the Beginner handyman to have when bidding on commercial or residential work.Know what the going rate is in your industry and stop short changing yourself. Start making money and know how to bid on work right rather then guessing or trying to use hourly rate to figure out cost. I had a very old version but purchased new ones every few year to keep me on point. I made money and did great using these book.Before hand i would bid and shot myself in the foot bidding to low and not factoring in other work or certain factors when bidding.Then a gentleman (Jim) from a big builder was looking for an all around guy (handyman) to do punch list & warranty work that was flexible, willing to travel and dependable. Plus do great work in the process. Well i bid on the work but was to low and missing certain factors the company was looking for.Well Jim gave me my first book 22 years ago because he said i had the will and fight to run a good business without cutting corners or trying to cheat the customer like so many others try and do. Plus being a 2 year old company most people don't make it past the first year.Jim stated i needed the right tools to keep me competitive and business smart so the jobs i bid on look good to the customers i am bidding for.Yes i had insurance, bond, an accountant and was listed with the secretary of state & had a tax id and business account but needed the book to complement the business.What a great gift that in turn i have done with other guys starting out or i know have been struggling in business. Yes some guys are my competition but if Jim didn't help me out how would I've have known how to bid right on work. So i have paid it forward just like what Jim did for me and purchase a few books on Amazon for the competition i meet.

R S Means Contractors Pricing Guide for Residential Repair and Remolding is not all what the write up states. I was taking a college class which the professor had nothing but good things to say about R S Means and the quality of the information. Now that I have purchased the book and reviewed it I realize that it must be some other book he was talking about. I have a small construction business and purchased this catalog to get a better idea of pricing jobs allowing for more opportunity to win contracts. This was not the case for this area and thus not worth the purchase price.

I purchased this as a Christmas present for my son who is a remodeling contractor. He loves it because it makes it easier for him to create more accurate estimates and bids for his prospective customers. As of May 2014 he still uses this 2013 edition that is sitting on his business desk.

Great basic information to easily document and cost jobs. Bids are easily structured from the information provided and the information can be easily changed if prices in your area are different. For some reason, I don't recall seeing a section in their flooring chapter on laminate installation. I may be wrong.Books is always in my cab bag.

RS means writes and publishes good Cost Data books for professionals in the construction industry; this particular book is brand new, in good shape but contence was more for amatures or semi-pros not professional contractors. I didn't like it as much as their usual cost data books.

I have a some upgrades on our home and this has helped tremendously in getting competitive contractor quotes. Well worth the money and has helped me identify contractors that are not quite on the fair side.

The hardest part of my handyman business is pricing. Where I live/work overpricing isn't an option. Word spreads quickly and jobs stop coming. At the same time I still need to make a living for my family. This book takes a lot if the guesswork out of it. I can feel confident in my bids knowing I'm giving a fair price.

I was not really familiar with the works of Shostakovich, but having been to Saint Petersburg several times and speaking with people about the siege of Leningrad, I thought the book would provide an interesting read. It more than delivered on this and I found it hard to put down. The photographs contained in this book are truly fantastic and not just a bunch of blurry indistinguishable ones. The story was both fascinating and moving, while at the same time giving me a new level of respect and appreciation for the residents of Leningrad, while showing how despicable the communist leaders truly were. It was also eye opening to learn about how this seventh symphony was played all over the world and universally understood. Even the Nazi soldiers (some of them) when they heard this symphony being played on loud speakers throughout the city understood that they would never be able to win this city, while also understanding that rather than the subhuman Slavs that they had been told lived there by Hitler that only the strongest and most human of humans could produce such music after such a prolonged siege and period of starvation. I had a SPB resident tell me this past summer about her father as a child and his evacuation from Leningrad during the siege. She spoke to me about the dangerous trip across the lake in the middle of winter. To then read about this "Road of Life" within the book in great detail, brought the earlier story I heard into much sharper detail. It was a good book that I hated to see end, although it is not a short one. After reading this book I bought the symphony to listen to and found the whole experience very enlightening after understanding the circumstances that surrounded its birth.

Wow. Seriously. Wow. This is an exquisitely written book, filled with such power and emotion that it moved me to tears on several occasions. The depth of the research and the honesty with which it is presented is impressive, and kudos to the author for this. I'm not really a huge non-fiction person, and I pretty much never read about war, but this one blew me out of the water. I don't give out five star ratings very often, but this one absolutely deserved it. The proof? Not only did I actually go out and buy the book, but I also bought a recording of the complete symphonies of Shostakovitch. I can't stop thinking about this book, even days later. Read it. You won't regret it.

Ostensibly this is a book for younger readers, perhaps for High School Advanced Placement English, Music or History students. This unassuming book however can hold its own in terms of pure scholarship. I am a subscriber to DSCH, and own every book I've been able to get my hands on on the life and music of Dmitri Shostakovitch, beginning with "Testimony", as told by Shostakovitch to Solomon Volkov and and New York Times journalist Harrison E. Salisbury's "The 900 Days:The Siege of Leningrad." A superb story teller, M.T. Anderson has created the most fully integrated book on Shostakovitch life & times thus far. There are those who consider Shostakovitch to be Gustav Mahler's heir apparent as master of the Symphonic form. We can only wish that someday a writer will come to the fore such as Henri-Louie de LaGrange did for the life & music of Mahler, & will write the definitive book(s) on Shostakovitch. For readers young AND old, Anderson's book will breath life into the story of this tormented soul who was the 20th Centuries most versatile composer.

M.T. Anderson is one of my favorite authors ever, young adult or otherwise, serious or silly. His "Feed" changed my entire perspective on our online world — and I was 42 at the time — and his "Jasper Dash and Flame-Pits of Delaware" is still one of the funniest books I've ever read. When I saw that he had written a book about one of my favorite composers ever, I one-clicked that puppy faster than you can blink. I was not disappointed.I knew the general story of Shostakovich's 7th Symphony, of his composing it during the Siege of Leningrad and what a splash it made across the world at the time, but Anderson presents an unbelievably detailed history of Shostakovich's early life in Leninist Soviet Union, Stalin's brutal reign, the war and the siege, and through it all, Shostakovich's composition of his huge 'war' symphony. It's a complete picture of an utterly foreign world to us, and Anderson brings it all round to the importance of art/music and how it keeps us human even in the worst of times. I was very sorry to see the book end.

I am a classical music lover and I thought this book was outstanding. The author provides the background of what is going on in Russia as it impacts on composer, Dmitri Shostakovich. I had no idea of the torments the Russian people went through as things in the country went from imperial rule to that of Lenin and then Stalin. In America, we hear much about the persecution of the Jews by Germany, but not about the thousands of Russians who were starved, sent to labor camps, tortured, shot, etc. The City of Leningrad was under siege for over a year while bombed and blockaded by the Germans. Shostakovich's 7th symphony (the Leningrad) was played all over the world and even by an orchestra of starving musicians within the city. It brought feelings of solidarity and hope to those who heard it.
