You know that part called 'Acknowledgements' which is available in almost every book and covers three or so pages? Ever read one of those? I bet you skip those pages every time!The first two-thirds of this book gave me the exact same feeling. Every chapter covers too much names that are soon to be forgotten by the time you enter the next chapter. No matter how inspiring these people are, you cannot ask the average reader to remember the UNC, DDA, EXRE and whatever NGO is being mentioned.And then, out of the blue, the book does get interesting. Most of this is due to the change in writing and you get a sense of personal touch in its writings. It doesn't even surprise me if Mr. Clinton only wrote some of this book.The people mentioned in this book deserve better than just being a paragraph in a chapter. Maybe Mr. Clinton should call his good ol' pal Al and make a documentary about this book, because it does hold award-winning content...

You might be surprised to hear that, having read this book, I am NOT that big a fan of "charity", but I have developed even more admiration for the accomplishments of former President Bill Clinton because he wrote this book, and opens up new pathways to helping our fellow citizens of the planet Earth. The book is well worth the read, and it flows very nicely. But the fact remains that apart from emergency disaster relief aimed at a limited short term goal of keeping people alive following a sudden and (hopefully) unexpected catastrophe, charity is a manifestation, in most cases, of the wrong side of the "teach a man to fish" versus "feed a man a fish" proverb.Both Bill and Hilary Clinton have been longtime supporters of the "microfinance" principles typified by the Grameen Bank (Professor Eunus' cooperative enterprise model of entrepreneurship). Giving "poor" people a motivation and a stake in the future (building and preserving for the future generations - their children) through co-opting them into entrepreneurial enterprises, not just as workers but as equity partners, is a far better way to banish poverty and solve the local problems that often can easily be overcome with modern technology. The opportunities to do this are particularly ripe as the world transitions toward non-fossil carbon fuels (i.e. Green fuels) like we are doing at [...] with algae based fuels, that also can be a feed source, in the short term for livestock, but in the longer term can also probably feed the world as well as fuel it, if we choose to take that route."Giving" is about alternatives like that. It could almost be retitled, "Choices", because it gives a much broader view of giving that we normally take. It is well worth the time to read, although, of course, President Clinton's voice is charming if you want to hear the audio version instead. I saw President Clinton on Oprah when this book was first released. Throughout the show Bill engaged in intriguing conversation with Oprah about the gift of giving. He held the audience and I in a trance. I really wanted to give more of myself.So when it came time for me to get a book to give me examples of where I could start to help I choose his book.Although, I do feel like this book was full of statistics and it was drawn out I had to keep in mind that this book was written by a former President. His way of persuading people to do what he wants is always backed by statistics and high-powered people with money. There were a couple of stories he highlighted of regular people who started volunteer efforts starting from the ground up. Bill has been involved in hundreds of Charity efforts, but his skill has mostly been used in raising the capital needed to help and sustain these charities.I think I was looking for a more intimate look at volunteerism. Although, I did get a lot of ideas; organizations I would like to participate in and donate to; I also came up with my own ideas of things I would like to see done in my community. I realize it won't be as easy as it was outlined in his book. As a matter of fact I know it's gonna be 10X's harder, but this book has inspired me to believe that things came change.

Bill Clinton gives solid recommendations on how we can all make a difference in the community. As somebody who already donates and volunteers and organizes in the community, I was happy to have picked up some good ideas. Thanks for writing Bill. :)

I am not a sports person. Period. My husband and/or son ritually explain the rules of each game to me at the beginning of every season, not because I can't remember them, but simply because it's information that I can't apply elsewhere, so poof, it disappears at season's end never to return except in the vaguest of recollections. If offsides meant the same thing in every sport, that would help. Also, shouldn't defense mean defending ownership of the ball? I realize that half of the readers of this review have stopped reading in sheer disgust by now, but I wanted to drive home the fact that...this is not a book about sports, or solely for sports people.To my immense surprise, I could not put this book down. It is phenomenally well-written, so well written in fact that I want to get a subscription to the WSJ so I can keep reading what this author writes. The amount of research, outlined by the author at the beginning of the book, is so staggering that I found myself compelled to find out what that amount of research could yield. Although the title of the book seems to give that away, there is so much more to learn than simply that.The principles that unfold in each chapter are those that can be extended into so many areas of life and business for women and men alike, which on balance makes a whole lot of sense, but is not always in-your-face obvious. When I lamented to friends that I wasn't sure about my son wanting to play college sports, those who owned some very successful and prominent businesses wasted no time telling me that a resume with "team captain" of any sport on it automatically pushed that candidate to the top of the list of potential hires.This book made the reasoning behind that crystal clear."The Captain Class" initially piqued my interest mostly because my son was captain of his high school and college lacrosse teams and I suppose I wanted to have more insight into what that position entailed than I had as a "sports mom" who went to the games, but had know idea what anyone out on the field was doing.So that...and also because of the chapter on the Steelers which no self-respecting Pittsburgh-born person could pass up.

The Captain Class is many different genres trying to fit into one book. On the one hand it is a serious and sober examination of sports dynasties and how they come to be. This is of course an impossible task undertake, but Sam Walker takes a very logical and serious look at the topic. It is also a primer for what makes something like a sports dynasty come alive and breathe and succeed. It is also a book on leadership and what makes a leader in the sports context.Truth be told, I feel like he succeeded in all of his missions but the important part is that he did not go down some well-trod paths. For that I am eternally grateful.Part I of the book describes the process by which he takes all the successful sports teams, from many time periods, from almost all sports, and he applies various sieves to disqualify candidates so that he has a manageable number of candidates to analyze. This alone is a large job, and a contentious one that would involve just about every denizen of every sports bar and pub the world over. I won’t get into his process, needless to say it will be the start of many a conversation, and his reasoning and explanation should be read and thought over by the reader.The author comes up with sixteen teams. Sixteen iconic teams that the author labeled as his Tier One teams; by the way, he helpfully lists the Tier One teams and the Tier two teams in the appendix of the book, i.e. those teams that barely missed being tier one. This appendix will be well thumbed in the future by this reader.The next daunting task is to examine at all the teams and to come to a conclusion as what made these teams Tier one, what drove them to being so salient amongst the many, which factor defined the success of that team. This is yet another impossible task, one that will also be debated ad infinitum. Once again, the author does an admirable and thoughtful job of considering a large number of factors and then writing an erudite defense of his analysis. Again, this is argument fodder amongst the denizens of the bars and pubs as well as the denizens of board rooms, think tanks, B schools, and consulting firms.His conclusion is that what drives the bus for these teams, are the captains of these teams, a throwback position in our entitlement society, a society that disdains hierarchy and a position that serves the greater good of the team. He explains why he moved past the mythical and iconoclastic belief in the coach, or the idolatry of the superstar athlete and settled on the water carrying captain. Again, I won’t repeat his arguments from the book because he does a much better job than I ever will, since he carried the water for the book and I think his argument, the way he phrased it, is important for the reader to absorb and consider.Part II of the book lists seven qualities that the author feel are unique and defining for a Tier one captain. He describes in depth, using anecdotes and extensive interviews with those captains, the unique and critical qualities that make these men and women so very successful and so very unique. Each chapter is a cogent explanation of each quality that the author feels is crucial for the success of each of these captains.Part III is the counterexample. The story of the Tier 2 captains, who had all the necessary qualities, except for that one critical quality which doomed them to Tier 2 rather than Tier 1, a cautionary tale.The well-trod path that the author did not go down is the path of the ubiquitous and trite path of the vast majority of business books. This book could very easily have become a mish mash retelling of the same points and sold as a formulaic recipe for success. The bane of the modern day business world is this formulaic grinding out of uninteresting and useless tomes detailing simplistic recitations of some Powerpoint bullets.Sam Walker has too much respect for the subject; more importantly, he appreciates the complexity and coupled nature of the successful captaincy. He has lain out what he feels is super salient about these captains and he is smart enough to not lead the reader to believe that the results of the great captain can be duplicated simplistically. He leaves it to us to try to put the facts together, to think about the ramifications of what we can do to develop those seven qualities, either for ourselves or as a coach or teacher for a student.As I finished the book, I was actually hoping for some pithy summation for my convenience, but in the end, I was grateful that he avoided the clichéd business school content. Now I can think deeply and critically on his arguments.To be fair, the author does reiterate the major points that he wanted to make at the end of each chapter, but it is a re-statement of the argument and not a how-to guide.Whether you are a sports fan, a coach, a consultant, or anyone having to do with developing people into leaders, this is an excellent and challenging addition to your library.

This is one of the best books I've read. I've worked as a teacher and coach for about a decade and have transitioned into the field of sport psychology over the last five years or so. With that, I do a lot of reading on different concepts within sports, coaching, sport psych, pop psych, etc. The concepts of culture and leadership have become big buzz topics in the sports world, and there is a lot of fluff out there. What I loved about this book is it fights through the fluff with years of intensive research on the world's greatest athletic teams of all time to provide a fantastic read incorporating stories, well-explained research, and substantive takeaways. It's outstanding and will be a great read for you if you're a coach, athlete, parent, or just a fan of sports. This will be one of those books that stands the test of time in the field of sports and coaching. Hope you give it a shot and enjoy!

Best book I've read this year (& maybe last year!). I read a LOT and this book was a paradigm shift for me. The idea of a "team captain" seems to be as relevant today as a "letterman jacket": everyone has one so it doesn't really carry any significance (& who would wear it now anyway?).After reading this book, the idea of a team captain seems CRITICAL in the development of a great team. Great teams are led by elite team captains and knowing what to look for isn't always what you might think. Most team captains are picked based on popularity or seniority, but after reading this book the selection of our team captain will change dramatically.As a coach, I learned a lot from this book but as a fan of the game, I found the stories and research fascinating. Very enjoyable read.

The book contains a series of essays fleshing out the circumstances of the 1953 overthrow of Mossadeq. The American sponsored coup ended a decade long struggle to democratize Iran, and the monarchy didn't face a serious political challenge again until it's demise in the revolution of 1979.The essays in this book address important questions: why was the National Front so weak? Why did it ultimately take so little to overthrow Mossadeq, and what was the role of the communist Tudeh party? Why did Eisenhower support the coup? It also raises some interesting questions: How did Mossadeq shift the economy completely away from oil dependency without causing mass unemployment or recession, what parties lost in that shift and what effect did they have on National Front support?Missing from the edition is a critical analysis of Mossadeq himself. He relied on mass demonstrations rather then political coalitions for power, and fundamentally did not seem to want power unless people begged him to accept it. Is it any wonder his partners turned on him?I'd recommend this as the second book people read for understanding 1953.

I really disliked this book. I understood that they wanted to give different perspectives and views on the coup and mossadeq, but I never heard of Mohammad Mosaddeq before, nor the coup of 1953 that is obviously overshadowed by the 1979. I was lost and confused. It was not a fun semester.

I'm one of those people that can pick out typing mistakes like crazy, and it drives me crazy when a textbook has them. So far I've only read the first chapter, so I may update more later, but any textbook with "here" instead of "her" and similar things shows me that they needed a proofreader. That's a lot of money to pay for something that they couldn't put the time into to proofread better!Update! At first I gave this 3 stars, but upon moving further into the book I'm changing it to 1 star! More and more errors. Extra words, sentences that don't make sense, Role Play scenarios that have errors on them. How am I supposed to learn with this book when I'm constantly trying to figure out what it's SUPPOSED to say, and how is that affecting my GRADES?

This book was required for my marketing class. After getting over the initial shock of how overpriced it is- it was a much smaller book than I had envisioned, also- I thought it must have some great information within its covers. Most things discussed are interesting, although I feel like I knew some of it already. The thing that really got me was the grammatical errors and typos throughout the book. I might be what you call a grammar nazi- I have been known to correct people in the midst of speaking- so it was very difficult for me to pay attention to what I was supposed to be learning when I was suddenly possessed by the desire to take a red pen to all the pages and correct the errors. It seems like even the editors found the information so boring they couldn't be bothered to read through it properly. As for me, I just can't take a textbook seriously with those simple errors scattered throughout. They're supposed to be teaching me about marketing, but instead I get caught up in the typos.

I purchased this book for my Personal Selling course this semester. So far, I find the book informative, yet a very easy read- full of helpful hints and case studies. I think the most relevant thing is that there is focus on how to use the skills learned in the book as part of your every day life, as well as when you look to career choices and selling your resume.

I really like this book! It is very easy to comprehend for anyone looking to learn the principles/basics of selling. The graphics also keep even a child engaged, but the content is very helpful. Anyone interested in sales or looking to sell themselves better will benefit from this book.

I guess this was an ok book about sales. It was laid out fairly well but sometimes it seemed contradictory at times. The end of the chapter situations I felt unprepared to answer because I didn't feel the text went over how those situations would work out...

Many readers might not even realize that Spitz was in the 1968 Olympics, too, where he won “only” four medals. After that, he surprised all his coaches by going to college (and excelling) at Indiana University. I remember back when Mark Spitz won all of his Olympic medals in Munich and he impressed me then. Now I have in my library the story of the man who made such a deep impression on me and on the world. A humble man who will never be surpassed by anyone because he stayed straight and clean and out of the limelight unless he was in a pool. Really happy to have this addition to my library.

I purchased this book to send to Mark Spitz to sign, I haven't read it yet, but plan to. The accomplishments of Mr. Spitz were extraordinary, almost super human.

Seemed well-written and the presentation was nice in this book on this great swimmer.

I am a big time swimmer almost setting a national record when I was ten. I loved this book because it walked you through the meets and you could get a feel of the emotions at the time. I also got nervous when in parts of the book there was a lot of pressure on the peopleThe only thing that I did not like was that there were many typos

Great history and insight into a piece of athletic history

I would rename it the auto biography of an all American narcissist. Only worth skimming to the parts that would interest the individual reader.

I totally agree with the previous reviewers. As a middle-of-the-road recreational swimmer, I heard of Spitz for the first time only last month and never thought that this biography would keep me busy, not least because the genre itself isn't a great favourite of mine (I own just a handful of biographies). All I can say is that, despite Phelps' success in surpassing Spitz by winning 8 gold medals, I hardly think he can ever equal his predecessor's charismatic personality and (to quote the subtitle) 'extraordinary life'. Though it's a pity the photos are reproduced in b/w, I recommend this book without hesitation. You don't have to have an interest in swimming or sports in general to own it: if 'story' is what interests you, Spitz's story won't fail to move you.
