This book seeks to distinguish itself in a manner that does not benefit anyone aiming to learn from it. I do not recommend this book in the least.1. In its effort to be different, it has managed to butcher the ideal learning sequence. It was a horrendous decision to organize the chapters the way they did.The concepts that should have been grouped together are scattered throughout the book in a haphazard manner. It requires one to reference sections of very many different chapters to fully understand a concept.2. It seeks to give age-old economic terms a new twist by renaming them. This gives rise to extreme frustration since it confuses one and does not tie in with previous or future learnings within the subject of economics.3. The graphs/charts are not always properly referenced or explained. An example to illustrate a concept sometimes uses a graph from many pages before it, and unless one has read the chapter from the start, one will not be able to understand what is going on. It is therefore a grossly difficult book to use unless you are dedicated to reading every single page.

I hate microeconomics, but this textbook is great. A lot of real-world examples and online tools.

Horrible to read. This book is difficult to understand and the problems are confusing. I am pretty comfortable with Microeconomics, but this book is not clear at all. Wouldn't recommend, if you have an option!

I looked at this book because one of the authors is Michael Whinston, a top microeconomist who is also a co-author of the leading graduate micro textbook Microeconomic Theory. However, this book does not live up to its promise. It seems that the authors could not decide whether they wanted to address the book to the intermediate or the advanced student. As a result the discussion of fundamental principles is complicated by applications and nuances that may be interesting to the graduate student but are likely to overwhelm the first-timer. The prose is at times too thick to wade through and the diagrams do not help.If you are an aspiring economic theorist, reading Varian's Intermediate Microeconomics and then going on to a graduate textbook is a better option. This well-written book might profitably be read in conjunction with the Quran in translation. The author portrays a very apologetic modern interpretation of the Prophet 's words and actions, however her perspective becomes predictably didactic and condescendingly biased toward that interpretation rather than engaging in any serious reflection. The author's understanding of Arabic is imperfect at best, which is not a trivial matter considering her reliance on many supposed "original" meanings for Arabic words that she contends have become distorted in the West. Regardless of their political views, or their opinion of Muhammad, I don't think this book will change anyone's mind either way.

I really enjoyed this book. It had a much more positive take on the life and political situation of Muhammad. Really interesting.

Excellent ! Broadview of this most Important prophet,his suffering,courage & inspirational life. Very helpful in understanding the impact of this man's life on billions of persons throughout the world. It is unfortunate that some followers corrupt the meaning of his message but it will help non muslims to better understand the founder of such a major religion.

I bought Armstrong's book about Muhammad in 2003, after reading her short book about the history of Islam. I liked that book, as it covered the main topics about Islam quite well, so I thought I would enjoy reading her previous, longer book about the founder of that religion: Muhammad - A biography of the Prophet.In Muhammad Armstrong paints a loving and sympathetic picture of the man who created the world's second largest religion (soon probably to become the first largest). The prophet is described as a gentle and caring person who possessed charismatic skills and spiritual deepness, that succeeded to transform Arabia from pagan belief to monotheistic belief in a remarkably short period of time. Armstrong depicts Muhammad in glowing colours, even when she admits his wrongdoings. In the 8th chapter, "Holy War", Armstrong recounts the massacre and summary executions of the Jewish community in Qurayzah and apologetically describes them as "a reminder of the desparate conditions of Arabia during Muhammad's lifetime" (p. 208). She continually reminds the reader that the word "Islam" means peace and reconciliation, but some of the events described in the book (and the atrocities committed in the name of Islam in our times) leave us wondering about the application of these virtues by Muslims throughout history.Prof. Emanual Sivan, one of Israel's leading historians of Islam, wrote a review about Muhammad in Ha'aretz. He described Armstrong's book as "history soaked in rose water" and claims that the author shed all sense of criticism before writing the book and failed in distinguishing between historical facts and myths which evolved long after Muhammad died. I am no expert of Islam, but I tend to agree; I feel I know more about the life of Muhammad now, but I am left with a sense of an unbalanced view of this great man.There was one observation in the book which I liked very much. When she starts describing Muhammad's rising success as a skilled and respected politician, Armstrong mentions that the Christian world has always judged this part of the prophet's life with distrust. The Western view has traditionally seen Muhammad's political success as proof that he was an impostor using religion as a means to power. To explain this attitude, Armstrong offers the following insight:Because the Christian world is dominated by the image of the crucified Jesus, who said that his kingdom was not of this world, we tend to see failure and humiliation as the hallmark of a religious leader. We do not expect our spiritual heroes to achieve a dazzling success in mundane terms. (p. 164)

The book is written in a way that people of western culture can understand.

I liked Washington Irving's Muhammad better although this was easier reading.

I would definitely recommend this curriculum since it has a nice mixture of writing and grammar. It still focuses on grammar but it gives the child a break from grammar in each lesson with a writing assignment. It isn't just a writing prompt, but information on how to write and different types of writing with student examples as well.Each chapter is broken down into sections and each section gives the student an opportunity to practice and review the new skill learned. At the end of each chapter there is a cumulative review paragraph which the student must correct using the new skills learned in the chapter.I also love that the tests are in the back of the book. No need to have to buy separate test booklets.

I bought it for my son's class at school, they used the same one last year except for the lower grade.

In The Nature Principle, Richard Louv’s underlying belief is that connecting with the natural world is fundamental to human health, well-being, spirit and survival.To support this bold claim, he uncovers what is an extremely persuasive body of evidence – theoretical, anecdotal and empirical – that nature really does have a significant power to restore, heal and energize.If you weren’t already aware of the healing power of nature, you will be even after reading just the first few chapters of this book. The book is based on what Louv has defined in his earlier books as the concept of Nature Deficit Disorder – the gap between people and nature. To restore this gap requires a transformation; a reunion of humans with the rest of nature. Louv seems to be happily devoting his life to helping people identify this gap, and giving them practical ideas how to bridge it.He asks what our lives would be like if we were as fully immersed in nature as we are in technology. Not that he ever comes across as a 21st century Luddite. On the contrary, Louv is as keen to make optimal use of technological advances as anyone else. But he argues that there has to be more than technology filling our lives, even going as far as saying that “the future will belong to the nature-smart – those individuals, families, businesses and political leaders who develop a deeper understanding of nature, and who balance the virtual with the real.”The Nature Principle is an extremely well-researched book. The author’s thoughts are well-arranged, and he communicates in an easy and persuasive manner. But it’s no “pie in the sky” approach. He is extremely practical about how people can connect with nature, and is particularly passionate about how nature can be introduced into school and college curricula. He would also like to see “time in nature” prescribed by doctors and psychologists, which clearly makes sense.In my own experience, I fully agree with Louv: “Nature can help us feel fully alive.” Reading this book may be your first step towards agreeing too.

Louv makes one important point--get out and enjoy nature. But, he takes this idea too far. Negatives: (1) Louv uses a lot of jargon, like "nature principle," "nature neurons," "nature deficit disorder." He is trying to shore up his argument by using pseudo-scientific language, and it doesn't work. (2) When he cites research studies, he doesn't give enough detail for the reader to evaluate objectively. (3) He peppers his writing with anecdotes--can't draw conclusions from isolated examples. (4) does not define "nature principle." (5) Unfortunately, people with lower incomes may have to live in environments that are dangerous--near factories, violence or drugs in the area, etc. Louv does not talk about issues of social justice.

This book helped me remember how much I loved playing outside as a kid, and how I loved catching grasshoppers and ant lions and digging holes... just playing. I particularly liked the chapter that encourages readers to look at the nature around them, no matter where they live. Even if you live in a large city, there is wildlife around you to observe and appreciate. It's still possible to learn the names of different trees in your neighborhood, or the types of birds nesting in a parking garage, or identifying cloud formations.I would recommend this book for anyone who loves nature, for anyone who feels trapped in a big city, and for parents of young children. It's important for kids to have unstructured, imaginative play time outside, and to do this, they must get unplugged from digital devices. This book provides a long list of ways for you and your family to get involved with outdoor activities, and this list would be perfect to present to the family and have each member choose the activity they want to do to get more active outside.An inspiring book for almost anyone.

The Nature Principle by Richard Louv is a wonderful followup to his popular book The Last Child in the Woods. I enjoyed listening to Rick Adamson read the unabridged 10.24 hour audio version. The short, focused chapters were perfect for an audio book format.Louv focuses on seven basic concepts that tap into the restorative power of nature. Combining ideas and information from both well-known naturalists through history as well as current research, Louv provides compelling arguments for the importance of the natural world in today's society.If you're looking for a book to guide the future of the nature movement, this would be a great place to start.

It's easy to say that being outside and in touch with the natural world is good for us. It's harder to prove it. Mr. Louv has used research to give evidence that shows just how much we gain from getting back to nature, and how much we lose when we suffer from "nature deficit disorder."A group of people who give public seminars to our community is using the nature principle, Vitamin N, as a basis for improving the instruction in these classes. It is our goal to encourage more people to participate in outdoor gardening activities and this book has given us the evidence we need to make it a factual based series, instead of just opinions.The book is not an especially "easy read" and sometimes the author goes off on tangents that are more touchy/feely than scientific (the reasons for the 4 stars rather than 5.) But he has done an excellent job of pulling together the evidence for his theories regarding our need for time in nature. I especially appreciate the references he has included so further research is much easier for anyone needing scientific basis for the information.
