Review

"Seasons and related nature changes are interesting subjects for students to explore. This series is appealing with Amanda Enright's colorful, vivid illustrations. Beginning and struggling readers will like the short sentences and simple text by Martha Rustad. The information enhances student understanding of science concepts and the seasons, and listed recipes and activities will enable readers to actively learn about these topics. Teachers looking for science or season materials will find this series very useful for their classrooms." --Library Media Connection (Journal)"When summer is over and we have enjoyed fresh tomatoes, corn, cantaloupes, and watermelon, we'll look forward to crisp, juicy fall apples of all varieties. In this book, the reader discovers how fall apples grow and the many things that you can make with them. This book is one in a series called Fall's Here!. Colorful illustrations enhance the lively text. The story begins with a family headed for a visit to the apple orchard to pick and taste apples. Crunch! The apple is sweet and juicy and there are seeds inside the core. The story continues with an explanation of how apples grow with the help of rain and sunlight. The book then goes on to discuss how we use apples. We can make apple pies, baked apples, and apple sauce or cider. The story explains how grinders smash the apples into pulp and then a press squeezes the pulp into cider. Cider can then be heated and filtered to make apple juice. A recipe for an upsidedown, inside out apple crisp is provided. There is also a glossary of terms used in the book and a list of other books and websites for further information about apples and how they grow. This picture book features child friendly text that is appropriate for grades K-3. Preschool aged children will enjoy looking at the pictures and having it read to them." --Science Books & Films (Journal)"In a series of books that describe all things about fall, Rustad provides a lively vehicle for extending readers' vocabulary. All of the books have a concluding activity to make or do. Animals presents an interesting experiment to explain the word 'blubber,' the fatty layer that ocean animals have, while Pumpkins delivers an easy-to-mix recipe for roasting pumpkin seeds. Leaves is outstanding for explaining the process of photosynthesis and chlorophyll in simple terms; Weather, for its clear description of seasons and the word 'equinox.' Apples is not so successful in elucidating how an apple seed grows into a tree, creating more questions than are answered. Harvest offers little new information about planting or reaping, and the directions for making a corn-husk doll are sketchy. Colorful illustrations fill the spreads with active, cartoonlike boys and girls surrounded by the green, brown, and orange hues of autumn. Select among the titles for topics of interest." --School Library Journal (Journal)

This book walks the reader through the growing and harvesting of apples. It also presents information on some of the different ways that apples are used. There are a number of things that make this series very good for both educational purposes and pleasure reading. First, the design is attractive and easy to follow. The organization works especially well for a teacher who wishes to cover certain aspects of fall in an orderly manner. I also appreciated the use of a table of contents, glossary, index, and additional resources. Each book also contains an activity that goes along with the information covered in each book. The second thing I like is the friendly and appealing illustrations. The illustrations are very child friendly. I also enjoyed the text which is simple enough for younger readers, but also includes side notes for readers who want more information. The text is written as a narrative which makes for a good read a loud. I highly recommend this series for all those that want to learn more about fall. I liked the fact that I learned some things from these books that I did not know previously. For example, I did not realize that when apple seeds are planted the apples they produce are not the same variety of apple as the seed that was planted. Lots of interesting things to learn in these books.

Bought for my classroom my students will love it.

Great book...arrived fast!

Summer has changed to fall and a family is heading to the Apple Tree Orchard to buy some apples and taste their cider. The "air feels cooler" and "colorful leaves blow in the breeze." Bushel baskets sitting at the base of several trees are filled to the brim with ripe, red apples. When fall arrives its the perfect time to head to an apple orchard to buy apples and taste some tangy cider. The young girl smiles as she bites into a crisp red apple. Her wide-eyed little brother watches her as he prepares to take a bite out of a green one. They soon discover that there are seeds nestled inside the core of his apple. When they are in the orchard they will learn how those seeds are planted, how they grow into trees, and how and why "apples are different from the apple that made the seed." Do you know? If not, you'll learn why they are when you read this book. In the springtime the leaves grow from buds and quickly spread into beautiful, sweet smelling blossoms. Bees soon arrive to "spread pollen from tree to tree" to fertilize the blossoms. In this book you'll get to see what the apples look like as they grow, how apple pickers carefully harvest the crop, what happens if they pull off the spur, how the apple crop is used, and how apple cider and juices are made. Do you know how many apples are pressed to make a gallon of cider? This is an excellent book for the young student to learn about apples and what they are used for. There are many interesting apple facts interspersed through the pages of this tale of a family's trip to the orchard. One of the most exciting field trips for children in apple country is a trip to the orchard. A fair amount of information could be gleaned from this book in a read and discuss session in the homeschool or classroom setting. The family field trip is fictionalized, but this beginning chapter book is loaded with information, including informative vignettes in the leaf-shaped sidebars. For example, we learn that "Some trees start to grow apples three to five years after they are planted." Another touches on grafting, but depending on the level of the classroom an instructor can choose to delve further into the topics introduced in this book or leave them on a first step nonfiction level. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, an apple crisp recipe, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. This book courtesy of the publisher.

Great Price and my daughter loves the book

Rick Remender continues his slamdunk run on the fantastic and creative Seven to Eternity. After the previous volume ended with the band of Mosak freedom fighters having captured the "God of Whispers" (the standout character Garils Sulm) and temporarily neutered his power to infect others with his mind-controlling offers. Adam Osidis continues to struggle both with his failing health and his decision over whether or not he should accept Garils' offer to cure his affliction. Meanwhile, the road continues to be treacherous for the party as those who are still loyal to Garils (including his deadly offspring) continue to hunt for their father in order to free him. The book kicks into high gear when the party is split down the middle after becoming lost in a deadly swamp. On one hand Adam and Garils continue on their journey and Remender plays the characters off one another perfectly. The manner in which Garils refuses to see himself as the villain is brilliant and makes his character a joy to read. On the other hand, the remainder of the mosak are forced to deviate to a nearby town to save the life of Jevalia (the winged girl who infiltrated Garils' court and helped the coup). We get to see a lot more of the various members of the group this time around since they were all rather quickly introduced last time. The slowed pacing is perfect as it gives the book's world more time to grow (and when the art continues to be this good that is a blessing all its own). Overall, this remains one of my favorite new series of all time.

I absolutely loved the first volume of Seven to Eternity. It was one of the first Image comics I had ventured to try after reading all of The Walking Dead and I really enjoyed it. I think its still my favorite comic after reading quite a few of the great Image comics. The colors are so vibrant and visceral, and the story telling is superb. I waited for months and months for the second volume to become available.I felt that the second volume was a bit of a let down. The first volume had a really epic story, building increasing uncertainty with the protagonist while really establishing the devious nature of the antagonist. The second volume did not give me what I was looking for, that being more insight into Mosak gifts, learning more about Adam's lineage, and the Mud King's offers. Instead they chose to do more world building, though I'll argue not in a very interesting way. I think they should have stuck to what made the first volume so intriguing and immersive.I would still recommend this to any fan of the series, and I continue to look forward to more volumes!

I love this series. I have every single issue and this is one of very few series that I buy the trade for also. The story is compelling, artwork is unmatched. For fans of Remenders and new readers, this is a great book. No doubt in my mind it’ll be adapted to screen soon.

This comic does not hold back. It's not something everyone can read with ease. It is, however, one of the most fascinating worlds you will ever dive into. The story never backs itself into a corner. It gives the reader room to imagine the possibilities of this open-ended world. The plot is still solid enough for the reader to follow and be interested in while learning about this crazy world they're fighting in. Overall it's magnificent and fun to read.

Incredible story told in an incredible world. The creators have spent countless hours creating each page and it bleeds through with every page you read. Very Well done.

This is one of my favorite comics ever and volume 2 is just as good as volume one and I couldn't be more excited for volume 3!

Great bookVery interesting course the story is taking Its hard to say at witch point the mud kings evil stops and the ambitions of those sworn to him begin and who is really responsable for all the suffering. Anyway I wanna know what happens next

The Cavern domed around us and bit into the air with jagged crystal teeth. It smelled of too many people all in one place, but it was cool and misty beside the tall waterfall that gushed in through a crack. Atish, one of my few jinni friends, handed me a glass orb the size of a plum. It was hollow and clear, like the hundreds of other orbs nestled in everyone else’s palms. It weighed next to nothing, and I was afraid it would float away if I breathed out too fast. We stood along the canal that divided the Cavern into two similar hemispheres. The canal began at the waterfall, snaked through the glittering jinni city, and poured into the Lake of Fire. A web of tall gas lamps kept the city pulsing in bright, golden light. The jinn called them wishlights. Spreading outward from the canal were the homes and buildings made by the jinn, some stacked and sloping up the curved walls. There were more jinn, more buildings, and more scents and colors here than in my human village in the mountains, and I wasn’t sure I would ever become accustomed to the crowd. Today was worse than usual. I had to twist my shoulders sideways to avoid brushing up against anyone, and when that didn’t work and I found myself face-in-armpit with a tall stranger, I would hold my breath and slink away as fast as I could. A few times, Shirin smiled apologetically at me, as though she understood what was troubling me but could do nothing to change it. It was the day of the Breaking, something that happened once a year. All jinn except my twin, Najwa, who was still in the Baghdad palace, had come to the canal. As it was my first time witnessing the Breaking, Atish and Shirin guided me, like a lost child, to a row of carts where an army of old women stood handing out the glass orbs. Atish was the newest member of the Shaitan, the elite branch of the jinni army, and Shirin was still waiting for her chance to be marked into the Corps of Physicians. Both of them had been friends with Najwa before I arrived, and had saved me when I’d made a mess of things before. Alhamdulillah for Najwa’s friends, because without them I’d be sniffing jinni armpits all day. “See?” Atish asked. He pointed at the dozens of children lining the canal. Some leaned out over the water, holding up their little orbs of glass. But theirs were lit from within, each a different color. One boy, taller than the rest, pulled back his arm and threw his orb into the waterfall. The ball of light plopped into the canal and bobbed to the surface before floating downstream. Seconds later, a spray of colored orbs attacked the waterfall as the rest of the children sent theirs flying. By twos and threes, they floated past where I stood, pressed between Atish and Shirin. Each one was still whole, still glowing, like soap bubbles in sunlight. “How do they not break?” I asked. “Magic,” Atish said wickedly. I snorted in response and rubbed my thumb over the slick surface of my own orb. “Show me what I’m supposed to do, oh great wise man.” He held his orb up to his nose and shut his eyes. A moment later, a faint pop came from his hands, followed by a golden flame that grew from within the orb. “Easy.” He winked at me. Beside me, Shirin groaned. “That does nothing for her, you know.” She leaned in close. “You’re supposed to think of something you regret, something that is keeping you from moving on. It could be something as small as lying about what you ate for breakfast, or, you know . . .” She didn’t have to finish. I knew she was referring to the wish I’d made on Najwa. When I first met Najwa, I’d been on my way to Baghdad to marry Prince Kamal. I was desperate to avoid marrying the prince, because I wanted to be with my little brother Yashar. When a jinni showed up at my window, I thought she was an answer to my prayers. I grabbed her, wished on her, and made her take my place. What I didn’t know then was that I was making a Fire Wish--a wish demanded by one jinni from another. Basically, I enslaved Najwa and stole her life from her. It’s hard to recover from doing something like that to anyone, especially your sister. “But the point is,” Shirin continued, “you put your bad memory in here, where it can’t get out, and then you send it to the lake.” “Why to the lake? What’s supposed to happen to it there?” “It shrivels and dies,” Atish said. “No.” Shirin shook her head. “It disintegrates. It’ll float out there until it comes across one of the flames. Then the flames will break the glass and absorb the weight of the memory.” “And then I won’t remember it anymore?” I asked. I wasn’t sure forgetting any of my mistakes was a good thing. How would I know who I was if I forgot what I had done? “You’ll remember it,” she said. “But it won’t drag you down anymore.” “Which raises the question,” Atish said with a teeth-flashing grin, “what could I have done that I regret this year?” I gulped, not sure how to respond, which annoyed me. He was teasing me, and I liked it--which annoyed me even more. Shirin took my hand in hers, palm outstretched. “Just hold up the orb, like Atish did, and send the memory into the orb. It’s like recording a memory in a crystal shard. Only this is more symbolic.” The jinn can store memories in crystals, which they revisit whenever they want to. It was useful, but my first experience as witness to such a memory had been morbid and shocking. I wasn’t in a hurry to to through that again. “I haven’t recorded any memories. Ever.” “You just think about it, then wish it into the glass. It’s not that hard. I mean, all those children did it,” she said. I nodded, and stared into the clear ball. The orbs from the children’s memories floated past, lighting my orb from behind. If they could do it, so could I. But lighting it wasn’t the hard part. I had to choose one bad memory. Why only one? I could fill up an entire box of these little balls each year.

This second book in the Jinni Wars series has twin sisters, one with newly discovered Jinni powers, fighting a war on several fronts. Evocative settings, unique characters, and palace intrigue mix in this magical tale. The visualizations feel very real and bring to life a dangerous but exciting new world. If you like genies with your fantasy novels, try this story.

Several reviews I'd read stated they were annoyed by Zayele in this book and that it wasnt as good as the first, so I was skeptical, but...I loved it! Better than the first! Definitely worth the read.I didn't mind the alternating chapters as much in this one. Maybe because I knew the characters better? This book kept me interested the entire time!

I am really enjoying this series. It is very imaginative and I like that while it's fantastical, it has some basis in mythology and doesn't involve some dystopian universe somewhere. Blind Wish is as good as Fire Wish and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Loved, loved, loved the sequel! I would love to read more from this author

This book was not nearly as interesting as the first one. Sad day :/It's good! Just not as good as the first novel in the series.

***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog***The Blind Wish by Amber LoughBook Two of the Jinni Wars seriesPublisher: Random House Books for Young ReadersPublication Date: July 14, 2015Rating: 3 starsSource: ARC sent by the publisherSummary (from Goodreads):Two sisters. A war. And the wish to end regret. . . . The magical, evocative follow-up to The Fire Wish. The war: The lies that started the conflict are in the open now, but the war between the humans and the jinn is as bitter as ever—and becoming far more treacherous. The sisters: Najwa and Zayele have just learned they’re half-jinni, half-human twins. Najwa is now the jinni representative at the human palace, working to bring peace. But her new role comes at a price—she’s no longer allowed alone with her cherished Prince Kamal. And as Zayele adjusts to life among the jinn, she discovers that she’s a magus, one of the most powerful jinn in the Cavern. Suddenly, she’s thrown into special training, and the strongest young men in the army are competing to be paired up with her.The wish: Once again, Zayele makes a wish. A wish that she doesn’t think can possibly go wrong. A wish that neither sister could imagine would change the outcome of the war. What I Liked:Ah! I just realized that this book is a July 14th release, not July 28th. When did that change?! I'm kind of meticulous when it comes to my review schedule, so this review is totally out of place (it's with the July 28th reviews, not the July 14th reviews, ugh)! Anyway, I guess in the long run, that's a good thing. This book is heading your way even faster! In this novel, Zayele attempts to wish her half-brother Yashar into good health - she wants to cure his blindness, which was brought on in the desert (so it was kind of her fault, which is why she is desperate to heal him). But Zayele is no healer, and the wish goes poorly. Yashar is brought to the Cavern, and Zayele is now training like she should have been - as a magus. Meanwhile, Najwa is forced to avoid Prince Kamal, as he has accepted the position of vizier. With the war looming, Najwa must discover who is the third player in the war, the third side that is sabotaging the jinn efforts for peace. Neither sister can prepare for - or stop - the impending force of war that crashes upon the jinn - and the humans. While I'm giving this book three stars, I actually really enjoyed the book. The story was great, if not a little slow. Lough digs deep into the story, and pushes along the series. Now that everyone knows about Najwa and Zayele, the sisters can each do their part and helping the jinn find peace with the humans - and stopping the war. Each sister has a distinct role to play.I usually don't like books split in two, with dual perspective, especially when it's not a guy/girl romantic pairing (or some sort of romantic pairing). In this case, it's third-person sister/sister dual perspective, which I didn't mind in The Fire Wish. But I didn't really like the dual perspective in this book, and you'll see why in the next section. It wasn't bad, but I didn't like Zayele in this book.I really like Najwa. She is depressed throughout this book, missing Faisal (her mentor), her mother that she never knew, and of course, Kamal. It's like everything has been taken away from her, and she has no one - not even her new sister, who forgets about her for most of the book (one of the reasons why I didn't like Zayele in this book). Najwa has lost so much, and is still fighting for her people. She is a million times stronger than her sister, through physically/magically, one wouldn't think so.There is romance, though the romance between Atish and Zayele is more prominent than the one between Kamal and Najwa. Kamal and Najwa's romance is bittersweet, and it's constantly there, but neither of them can act on their feelings while Kamal is vizier, so physically, their romance is stoppered. Atish and Zayele are training to be a Dyad (kind of like parabatai in The Mortal Instruments). A Dyad is a member of the Shaitan (warrior - Atish) and a magus (powerful jinn in terms of magic - Zayele). The plot is a bit slow, but things take off like a rocket in the last one hundred pages or so. The climax creeps up quickly and the story is over before you know it. High stakes, high action, towards the end! Make it to the end and you'll see that it's worth reading this one, despite the slow pacing of the first half of the book. What I Did Not Like:Zayele. I did NOT like her in this book, for so many reasons. One, she's selfish. She selfishly assumed that she could "fix" her blind half-brother, that he would want to be "fixed". She couldn't "fix" him AND he didn't want her to try. She tried anyway - selfish! And failed miserably. And then she had the nerve to get angry with everyone else when Yashar is brought to the Cavern to be treated (she made his blindness worse). She acts like it's everyone else's fault but her own. Zayele does not ever take responsibility to her actions. And then there's the fact that she's practically rewarded for being a stupid and powerful magus. Yes, she needs training, but she is so impulsive and ruins things time and time again. She deserves to till soil or something! She is SUCH a spoiled, conceited person! She's also very entitled. Being the more powerful of the two sisters, she just assumes that she's powerful enough to do this or that, or that she can do this or that without needing permission. She is only concerned about using her jinn magic and indirectly showing off.Poor Najwa! She has little magic, yet being a jinn is all she's ever known. And then her sister takes over her life, and is now a much more powerful jinn than Najwa could ever be. So heartbreaking for Najwa. Throw in the fact that Zayele is the WORST SISTER EVER, never remembering her sister throughout the book. Najwa is suffering from jinn depression and all Zayele thinks about is her powers and her upcoming Dyad bonding and basically everything that doesn't have to do with Najwa, or even the war. Najwa serves the jinn over and over, but Zayele is in this for the fun and romance. Her Dyad is going to be the boy she is falling for. Good for her. It's obvious that I liked Najwa a lot more than Zayele. I just didn't like Zayele in this book. I struggled with her in The Fire Wish too. She's just a terrible person, forcing wishes on people that don't want them. Stop being selfish! So, yes, this book loses two stars (it might have gotten five - at least four!) because of Zayele.Would I Recommend It:Despite my severe dislike of Zayele, I'd still recommend this book. I LOVED The Fire Wish, and I definitely enjoyed this book... minus Zayele. Too bad her perspective covered half the book (alternating chapters with Najwa). Najwa's story was more fleshed out, real, raw, developed. Zayele seemed like a toddler flailing around from start to finish. But hey, you might like her more than I did, who knows!Rating:3.5 stars -> rounded down to 3 stars. I hope there is another book in this series? Though I can see this series ending as it does, because the ending of this book was quite satisfactory.

Amber Lough doesn’t disappoint with her incredible sequel to The Fire Wish.In The Blind Wish, Lough transports us back to the land and lore she so adeptly brought to life with TFW. Remember, the jinni and humans are at war, we’re in medieval Baghdad, and wishes are both more powerful and dangerous than we’d ever imagined.Lough’s writing is so gorgeous that I often found myself rereading a phrase several times over just to savor the deliciousness of her words. Her poetic descriptions paired with her fantastical imagination make both the human caliphate and the jinn cavern come alive in a way that makes me ache to see it for myself. She demonstrated her original imagination with The Fire Wish, but here, she seizes the freedom of a sequel to weave even more mythology, mystery, and magic into the incredible world she’s built.I adore both Najwa and Zayele, the two girls who narrate the book. I loved spending equal time with both girls. Lough doesn’t shy away from the hard work of creating authentic and flawed characters and I love her all the more for it. These girls are smart and interesting and…have a lot to learn. It’s a treat to have a front-row seat while they grow.Since it still holds true, I thought I’d include a paragraph from my Fire Wish review: This book has war, love, betrayal, espionage, history, magic, and beauty. If you love historical fiction, you'll love it. If you love books about other cultures, you'll love it. If you love fantasy, you'll love it. If you love paranormal romance, you'll love it. If you love spy books, you'll love it. If you love action books, you'll love it. If you love poetry, you'll love it. Yeah. It's that good.Best of all, it’s just a click away! So, what are you waiting for?

4.5/5 stars! I really enjoyed the The Blind Wish right from the beginning. As with The Fire Wish, the worldbuilding was breathtaking. I especially loved the Breaking and the Haunted – they really were perfect. The ending could have been a touch stronger, but still, I highly recommend this series!

Lewis & Clark, by Nick Bertozzi

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up—Meriwether Lewis, a complex and fascinating figure in American history, was a bold explorer and a man haunted by demons. Both sides of his personality are revealed in this saga of his search for a Northwest water passageway to the Pacific. This retelling begins as Jefferson informs Lewis that Congress has approved this expedition. After recruiting William Clark and obtaining necessary provisions, the expedition departs St. Louis in 1804. Death, stampeding buffalo herds, steep-sided canyons, large bodies of moving water, and encounters with multiple Native American tribes must be negotiated. The author makes excellent use of the generous page size. The vertical orientation of side panels frames a deep chasm and scale the heights of a tall tree. Prairies are depicted with long horizontal panels spanning the gutter, and full-page spreads show the expansive country, contributing to readers' understanding of the vastness of the journey. Traditional panels and speech balloons are used to portray the points of view of the explorers. Shapes and outlines of panels alter significantly when the various Native communities are depicted, with a different design for each tribe. Inventive use of differently shaped speech balloon help readers identify each individual tribe that the explorers encounter. This story continues beyond the conclusion of the expedition; it ends three years hence, detailing Lewis's tragic end as well as suppositions regarding Sacajawea's whereabouts.—Barbara M. From Booklist

This important and often retold episode from U.S. history—the scientific exploration, federally supported by President Jefferson, to find a water route from the Missouri to the Pacific—receives an accessible, humorous, and accurate rendering by cartoonist Bertozzi (Houdini: The Handcuff King, 2007). Relying on good research and his own clarified sense of what these historical figures might have felt, Bertozzi shows us Lewis’ depressive psyche, Jefferson’s devotion to scientific inquiry, Clark’s mediation skills, the slave York’s self-perception, Sacajawea’s role and personal considerations, and the attitudes, fears, and certainties of the general populaces of the exploration party, Native American villages, and white townspeople. The small, black-and-white panels provide clear and action-packed detail as well as insightful poses and facial expressions. The different languages being spoken and even hand signs are creatively distinguished by different balloon outlines. An excellent supporting choice for the American history curriculum and a fun and edifying read in itself. Grades 7-12. --Francisca Goldsmith

As excited as I was about getting my hands on Nick Bertozzi's LEWIS & CLARK, I have to say that it turned out to be a sad disappointment to read. Full of inacccurate historical details and incorrect details in Bertozzi's illustrations; the book fell far short of my expectations. Bertozzi's uniforms are pretty sad. His Indians are cookie-cutter stereotypes, both in appearance and in their speech. Lewis comes off as a raging lunatic (hardly the sort of man that Thomas Jefferson would have had as a Private Secretary...or sent to lead an expedition!). Having participated in the recent L&C Bicentennial observance, I just found myself wondering where Bertozzi got his information and his ideas? It seems to me that Nick Bertozzi took a fantastic tale of true adventure and tried to 'improve' on what is already a great story. Sometimes you just cannot make a great story better by exercising 'artistic license'. Looking at the bibliography on the last page of the book, I found myself wondering if the author READ any of the volumes he cites???Nice 'comic book'. Disappointing historical graphic novel.

Beautiful illustrations, fantastic story.

Gave this as a gift... Haven't read it myself, but enjoyed glancingt hrough it and seeing their journeying portrayed in such a lively way.

It's fairly shameful that I went to a college named after these guys, and I know very little about their expedition. So when I came across this in a search for stuff for my 3rd-grader to read, I figured the least I could do was spend the hour to read it myself. It's kind of an impressionistic take on what really comes across as an astonishing trailblazing venture. The artwork and approach is quite good at conveying the sense of some of the hardships involved. There's a lot going on, with minor threads involving Clark's slave, Sacajawea, Lewis' depression, and more. It's kind of a lot to take in, along with tonal shifts (including fart gags) that are occasionally jarring. Probably the most interesting aspect, which is kind of confusingly rendered here, is all the interactions with various tribes they encountered along the way. It kind of sparked my appetite to learn a little more, and maybe pick up one of the standard histories, such as Stephen Ambrose's Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West. And although I lament the absence of a more detailed map of the route, the book's overall design and repeated commitment to inventive double-page spread layouts made it a little more interesting than the standard graphic book.

When I read this I thought, "Well, that's the good, the bad and the ugly of the Lewis and Clark story." Fun to read, but definitely comic book fiction, this will probably appeal most to middle school boys, after all it's a story about a bunch of men basically living together for a long period. I was disappointed that Sacagewea's prowess was not applauded. Most of the story is about Meriwether Lewis, who deteriorates into a not-so- likeable guy. Mild-mannered Bill Clark seems to get lost in the shuffle. Dare I say that although Native American tribes are named and differentiated, they blend into the same stereotype. However, dates, territorial maps, and historical informative bits are helpful to those who have forgotten or were never taught about this expedition: Jefferson is president, the USA ends at the Mississippi River, the date of the expedition is 1803/4 to 1806.

Reason for Reading: I enjoy Western history.I've read a few books on Lewis & Clark before (children's books) and read many books on the expansion of the west where the Lewis & Clark story would take up a chapter so I am familiar with this story. This book is recommended for ages 12 and up but it isn't written down to a young audience, adults will enjoy it as much or more. The book of course tells the story of their epic journey from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean, in search of a viable water route. That journey was fraught with accidents, bad luck, aggressive Indians, injuries and setbacks from nature itself. Bertozzi manages to tell a fine introductory tale of this expedition and these adventurers who were full of their success before they had even started.Bertozzi also brings to life the personalities of Lewis and Clark in a way that I haven't encountered in my previous reading. Captain William Clark is shown as the level headed partner and thus is not the one that stands out. He is always reasoning with Lewis about there plans, calming him down, and putting out the flames of discord with others. He is shown as a quiet, intelligent, reasonable, respectful man who probably kept the expedition from becoming a mess, in more ways than one. Though he was willing to have as much fun as the next guy and went along easily enough with Lewis' more thrill-seeking adventures. On the other hand, Captain Meriwether Lewis was a man with a volatile temper, quick to anger, and if not for Clark's levelheadedness may have caused some serious trouble on their adventure. Lewis was obsessed with the expedition and finding a water route to the Ocean. When coming first upon a huge waterfall and eventually hitting the Rocky Mountains he took these hits deeply and went into deep depressions, took to drink, and could not be reasoned with. When they finally made it to the Pacific Lewis was not happy as they had not made it entirely be a water route and their stay at the end dragged on because he entered a deep depression. Bertozzi also plays up a story involving Lewis, his reactions and feeling which along with many other factors may have lead to his final act of ending his life.Done in black and white, which I always think suits historical non-fiction well, the art is kept simple without a lot of background within the frame by frame discussions of characters. Lovely backgrounds are used but when necessary and are never added clutter. The one problem I did have though, was that at times we are supposed to read horizontally across both pages and this was not always made evident. Sometimes it was obviously clear, other times the reading went down one page and started up again at the top of the other and then there were those times you were reading along and realized you should have read horizontally across both pages once you got to the top of the second page. A minor annoyance that happened to me more times than it should have. A good, interesting story, which Bertozzi has written with a fine sense of humour but not exactly a page-turner.
